2 more coaches -- when and who?

Submitted by Rasmus on

Some may not agree, but it's pretty clear the two remaining spots on the staff are reserved for defensive coaches, probably DL and DB.

DL because both Hoke and Mattison likely recognize the importance of a dedicated DL coach, and DB because, well, yeah. Two DB coaches is also a possibility.

So why no hires, especially at DB? Possible reasons:

[1] Mattison is too busy recruiting, and doesn't have time to focus on hiring coaches. He'll do it after signing day. Rushing it now won't help recruiting and if we've learned anything in the past three years, it's that chemistry among defensive coaches and coordinator matters.

[2] They have someone in mind, but he's still working... The best-known candidate in this category, Mike Trgovac (Packers' DL coach and Bo-schooled Michigan man), is not possible, since it would be a step backward for a guy thought to have a shot at the Denver Broncos' DC position. Joe Whitt, Jr. (Packers' cornerbacks) was coaching at Louisville (cornerbacks and recruiting coordinator) through the 2007 season, so maybe, if he's interested in returning to the college ranks and Woodson and Trgovac recommend. I don't see any possibilities on the Steelers, and the Jets guys are highly unlikely. As for the Bears -- Jon Hoke (defensive backs) is, yes, Brady Hoke's older brother. Surely there's been a thread on this?

Anyhow, what is the CW?

Jon Hoke might be a good coach, but he shouldn't be our DB's coach.

A) He doesn't like to recruit.

B) We're already getting a bad rap for going inside to hire all the time, we don't need to add nepotism to that meme.

i just hope we get a good coach whoever it is, but i hope that it happens soon. this is hurting us in recruiting, but i do realize that there is no reason to rush it for one class, whoever it is needs to be a good college coach and fit in. this may even be the guy that Mattison wants to groom to be our future DC. I am not sure how this is hurting us with recruiting.  We are filling this class up at an insane pace.  Hoke and Mattison have been machines as to defensive recruiting.  We are loading up on LB and DE - we have so many young DBs already and have added more.  We are NOT suffering w/r/t D recruiting.

The only way this is hurting us with recruiting would be that we don't have enough staff to help our present staff who are traversing the country... but wait even with the few staff we have we are still tearing up the recruting trail, so nothing (not even a lack of staff) will slow us from dropkicking this recruiting class.

I don't know what's holding up the DL coaching, but I imagine that there might be some negotiations/finalizing details going on with Corwin Brown now that the Pats are out of the playoffs.

hoepfully Corwin Brown at DB.

Jon Hoke said in an interview that he doesn't want to leave Chicago, so it's unlikely to be him. Mattison and Hoke are both DL specialists, so it'll be interesting to see what they do.

Isn't he still unemployed?    He would be a great addition to the staff.   I know that it's a step back from what he was doing at Florida, but it would be a good way from him to get back in the game and also could put him as a potential successor for Mattison down the road.    I know that he's in the mix for a couple of other openings, but if we could get him back in A2, it would be a great get.

There is probably a better than average shot at them waiting to name at least one coach after signing day since they have elevated Singletary as a temporary coach to use him on in home visits.

What did Singletary play at UM?  He may be ready for promotion to a position coach, especially since Hecklinski is coordinating recruiting.

Still I would like Corwin Brown if he is interested.

Then, we could have hours of Board posts saying "Ditka vs The Buckeyes, who you Got?", "I'll take Ditka by 21 points". Then the pragmatists among us, will of course chime in with "he's just one guy!", then the smart ass's among us, will of course reply with "you're right, Ditka by 14 points".

Correct me if I'm wrong. I believe I read somewhere that each team is only allowed 9 coaches (paid). We already have 8. So that would mean either Hoke or Mattison would have to coach either the DL or DB. As for Hoke's brother he said that he wants to stay in the NFL. My vote would be for Woodson. Packers win the Super Bowl and Woodson retires to coach at his Alma Mater and one day take over as DC.
