2 minute drill

Submitted by Ziff72 on

Lost in the debacle of the 2nd half was the end of the 1st half.  What do you think our plan was to end the half?  We wasted a ton of time and ran Denard off tackle twice.  It appeared Denard saved another disaster of a 2 minute drill.   Do you think if Denard had been stuffed we would have shut it down or would we have brought Devin to hustle it up?

We have never been very good at operating at a brisk pace when Denard is at QB.   This was noticeable against ND, MSU, Nebraska and in a few games last year as well.  Whether that's on the staff or him (or both?), I don't know -  but it's seemed like the plays have been coming in faster with Gardner at QB these last few weeks.

I'm talking about us getting plays off without using too much time.  By RR's standards, we did not operate very quickly that year.   If you watch a game from that season, you'll constantly see RR frustrated over us not snapping the ball soon enough.  Watching Arizona on Friday, they seemed to run a lot more "jet" plays (with the playclock above 20 seconds) than we ever did.

I think they were content with going into halftime down 17-14, but Denard busted an atom-smasher tackle attempt, due to his immense awesomeness. It doesn't need to be said again, but it's too bad they didn't keep running him on the edge with blockers in the second half. Also they should have at least let him pass it once, even if he was to throw it away on purpose just to keep the defense somewhat honest.
