Try pulling something that cool off in the media these days.

That was actually a pretty cool rendition of the victors

I remember that commercial. Burger King did those with several teams that season.

Really liked these commercials--they did one for us, Notre Dame, Penn State, USC, and Colorado.
October 25th, 2016 at 8:10 PM ^
There was an Ohio State one too.

those were the days

That meal is still not worth $2.99.
I must confess, I used to eat those things, but I was young. When I was in HS, you could get a whopper, fries, drink AND a cheeseburger, and get change from your $2 meal money the school gave us for away tennis meets.

Was this during the Korean War?

I know. Dude.
October 25th, 2016 at 8:58 PM ^
At the time the unit cost for a whopper was $.53.
I learned a lot about life working that drive-thru in high school. And $4.50 per hour was enough for beer, weed, and gas.
October 26th, 2016 at 12:06 AM ^
Jeez $4.50? What was this, the 1800s?

Piss off half the people in the state........ what a great business strategy

Haha, that's what I thought too. I love it but it seems oddd.
October 25th, 2016 at 8:25 PM ^
Back in the day, did you really think half of the people in the state were staee fans???
October 25th, 2016 at 8:49 PM ^
This was before disrespekt
October 26th, 2016 at 9:21 AM ^
id say that was peak disrespekt.
and it was glorious.
October 26th, 2016 at 4:40 AM ^
The staee grads were working at the drive-thru window.

More like 10%

And those 10% weren't in the demo.

Local markets brah.

According to State fans, you need to be an alumnus to be a State fan. If half our state was made of MSU alumni, I'd move to Canada.

Ha ha that was really funny weird but funny

Sorry in advance for doing this, but I have an economics degree and you got me thinking.
$3 for a whopper, fry and drink sounds great, but how does it compare to today? Unfortunately, I'm not sure whether or not the offer they showed there is just the buying the Whopper combo or not (what I mean is because the modern Whopper combo is a medium fry and drink and the offer in the ad very well could have been for a Whopper and a small drink and fry) but we can do it both ways.
Assuming it IS a like for like (medium in '96 and '16), $2.99 is a GREAT deal. $2.99 in 2016 dollars is $4.55.
If the 1996 ad is offering a Whopper and small fry and drink for $2.99, the nearest offer to that that I was able to find just now is $4 for 2 bacon cheeseburgers, a small fry and drink. $4 in 2016 converted to 1996 dollars would actually be $2.63, so slightly better.
As for the gasoline, I couldn't find historical data specific to Michigan, but the annual, nationwide average cost of gas in 1996 was $1.23. Today I paid $1.95/gallon in SE Michigan. $1.23 in 1996 equates to $1.87; more or less the same.
TL;DR I'm a nerd.

Fast food chains have increased their margins to boost profits. They were clogged in the $5 neighborhood for a while--paying more than that used to feel exhorbitant. But once they crept past that mental barrier, they were able to charge more.
I know that prices like that a hard to make money on.
October 25th, 2016 at 8:59 PM ^
Absolutely. I remember thinking more than $5 for lunch was ridiculous. Now I frequently spend $10-$12.
October 25th, 2016 at 10:25 PM ^
I do anything to avoid paying more than three dollars anywhere. Example, frequently at the Union: free Wendy's water cup (effectively a small, but refills), a coupon for a free frosty, and a side of lamb meat from Ahmo's (2.50 as opposed to a 6.50 gyro). A meal for a college kid.
I regret nothing.
October 25th, 2016 at 10:51 PM ^
I admire that. I'm not married (anymore), no kids...so I spend my money more freely. I always say I'm gonna cut back but getting away from work at lunch is the best part of my workday.
October 26th, 2016 at 12:27 AM ^
under $2.
Good for the wallet. Bad for the obvious reasons.
October 26th, 2016 at 9:18 AM ^
I know that was me for a long time. I just couldn't fathom paying more than $5, especially when the "big" value meals like this or the Big Mac meal were $3 for so long.
I haven't been to either McDonalds or the BK Lounge in years. If I need to grab a quick burger, I'll stop at a 5 Guys or something like that. The whole meal with be around $12, but it's worth it.

I think they have a 10 dollar two whoppers, 2 drinks, 2 fries deal now I see on commercials.

for 0.85 a gallon in Michigan. I moved to OK in '87 and got gas for .58 per gallon. Before 9/11 in TX gas was about .80 a gallon.

Same here. Don't think I've eaten at BK in at least 10 years, but may have to swing by there this week!

I remember this!!!
October 25th, 2016 at 8:21 PM ^
shouldn't the commercial's ending read "pay the Spartan at window #1"?

Nice!
