1986 FSU - Bo and Harbaugh take on PrimeTime

Submitted by Dr. Sap on
In what may have been the first time Bo Schembechler ever threw two consecutive long-bomb passes to start a game, Jim Harbaugh went right after Deion Sanders to begin the 1986 contest against the Florida State Seminoles. Yes, that Deion Sanders and yes, that Martin Mayhew were the FSU DB's that day. Obviously Bo and Harbaugh were not going to let the athleticism and talent of PrimeTime dictate any change to their game plan. Instead of shying away from Deion's side of the field, the Wolverines went right after #2 to send their own message.

I had heard tell of this game.  Legend had it there was a game Bo coached once where he didnt start the game with a dive off right tackle.  Folks that was there claimed he threw not one, but two deep passes to start the game but I said "naaaa - cant be."  I watched, either in person or listened on the radio to pretty damn near all the games ol Bo coached for Michigan and in each and every one I could remember he started the game with the same play.  A tailback dive off right tackle.  Shoot - some fellers claimed it was more likely to see the gad-durn sun rise in the west than it was for Bo to start a game with any other play than a tailback dive off right tackle.

That there game boys is a Unicorn, plain and simple.

I want to say that the FSU team we played in 1991 sent 6 or 7 players to the NFL - Amp Lee, Casey Weldon, just to name a couple - and while I was at both games growing up, yeah, I don't remember that 1991 quite as fondly.

The 1991 game was closer than the final score indicated. We had two horrible plays - the Buckley interception return, and the long Amp Lee TD right before halftime. But our offensive line got it rolling against a very good defense.

I don't remember the start of the game, so thanks for posting this.  On the 2nd play, it was interesting to see freshman Greg McMurtry being targeted.  He was a very highly recruited player in H.S.  Today, he would have been a consensus 5 star.  Even back then, there was a ton of hype around his recruitment, partly because he was a great baseball prospect as well.  The Boston Red Sox wanted to sign him, but he eventually chose college football.

It's funny to look at footage like this! As time progressed the pads, jerseys got smaller & fashionable from ex-Packer WR James Jones in-game hoodie to Zeke's reverse tube top!! Crazy
