This was my first game at the Big House and the last Band Day, in which I was a participant. Don Canham was still looking for ways to fill the stadium in the early 70s and one of his ideas was to invite about 10,000 high school band members to cover the field and half time and fill the stands. Top ranked Michigan won this game 31-0 behind Rick Leach, Harlan Huckleby, and Rob Lytle.

Just awesome. I never played Football myself, nor any athletics at this level. I just love the vibe and the energy from the staff. It's also a great glimpse into a more raw atmosphere in the old school sense. that locker room looks so crowded - not a place of comfort but a place of business. Love the 'That's a helluva football play right there..." Just awesome.

Leach got to be okay passing by his senior year but never did get over 50% accuracy for his career.
I think I was at this game. I don't think it was until '77 or '78 that my dad bought four season tickets instead of two; up until then he alternated taking me and my brother to non-Ohio State games and my mother to the Ohio State game.

Never forget the game in Columbus that year, tied 0-0 at halftime, Michigan scored 22 second half points to beat Woody and the Buckeyes 22-0. We did not complete a pass!
We ran out of South Quad out to be on State Street with a bunch of other students to whoop it up and celebrate! Had been a long time since we had beaten OSU (not since 1971, I think) and the sheer spontaneous joy is something I'll never forget!

of 1976 season. For this Wake Forest game Michigan was ranked No. 1 in both AP and UPI polls.
Schembechler took a lot of shit from the press for that 1976 Option I offense and little to no passing:
After blasting Navy 70-14 pulverizing them with option rushing attack, UM comes out throwing vs. Wake Forest: Schembechler: "You people like passing and there it is. That's how we keep the score down."
Don Nehlen shows up for 1977 season and whoa-ho-hooooo! Play action passes??? This can't be happening at Michigan!

Ended up playing for some great Pittsburgh Steelers teams in a couple super bowls.

I think Bo got that phrase from being on Woody's staff. I saw a clip of Woody doing color commentary for a bowl game once and he kept saying "thats a great Football Play right there"....never just "Play" always preferenced by "Football".

You would think M was in a dog fight from that speech. But M was winning 17-0 at that point.
I loved the play diagram / adjustments. That part was brilliant. I imagine Harbaugh has a similarly creative football brain.
BTW, I suspect I am one of the few guys on this board with degrees from UM and WFU.

That was just amazing. Never seen Bo and Hanlon in action like that before. Had no idea that's how it worked. Thanks so much for a fascinating rarely seen (in)side of things!!

made better half time adjustments than did Michigan under Bo. Offense was simple then but fundamentals were absolutely perfect and with just some fine tuning, based on what opposition was doing, we almost always dominated in the second half. Bo must have had tremendous faith in Coach Harbaugh. He was the first M qb that I saw that basically had a green light when it came to throwing. Hell, I'm not sure if anyone prior to him was allowed to check out of a play. Knowing what we know now, it's perfectly understandable whey he had so much faith in this young man. To be the third best player in the game in back-to-back years is one hell of a testament.
