1948 Rose Bowl - color footage
Via r/cfb, here is a color newsreel of the 1948 Rose Bowl (Michigan vs. USC). Football footage starts at about 1:30. Chappuis has a gun for an arm.

And good on you for correctly identifying the date, unlike the video owner. Maybe we should bring back the single wing...Seriously though, that offense does look well oiled, and Chappuis looks like one heck of an athlete by any standard

I want to watch all the 70's Rose Bowls again. Don't ask me why.

You're a masochist, that's why. Just make sure you know the safe word if the torture gets too intense.

I think the safe word should be "Hanlon"

Happy Friday!!
I don't remember seeing any ghosts, aliens, or antiques on the field, so the History Channel is probably the wrong place to look.

Michigan used to have a very creative offense that was ahead of the curve. Now, we get to watch 20th century offense in the 21st century while Ohio goes undefeated during two straight regular seasons with the spread.
Since it's what the AD was looking for, you can't really blame the coaching staff. I guess being behind the curve is just part of the "brand" now. Imagine what would happen of the med school or engineering school was "branded" like that.

There are many, many things about Michigan that are stuck in the past. I know tradition is what makes Michigan, Michigan. Still, it seems like everyone raises hell with any change that doesn't fit the status quo of the 1940s. It's hard to be progressive when everything about a program, including the fans, is based upon the history of the program.

Alabama has dominated college football with old school offense for the past few years. Hell, if you find the best coach and the best players for the system, I'd bet you can win a national title with a triple option offense too.
Okay, rant over. I'll get off my soapbox now.

No face masks, no rib protectors. Just concussions and blood.

Nice find!
Some of you may remember but a while back the Pistons had a throwback night against Philly. The broadcast started out in black and white with old time sound, and then gradually got more modern each quarter. Would love for us to to that.

I love that the audience card flag at 2:50 has 48 stars.

Here is link to Seth's piece on Weisenburger, the spinning fullback, that describes the basic offensive set and Weis' experiences with the team and some other thoughts.
Great find! Thanks for posting. The opening moments reminded me of the parade scene from Animal House.
