Watch out for Penn State.

Methinks we would not have gotten players like Hudson and Nordin from their backyard if it was a year later.

Penn State has always recruited fairly well and James Franklin is still their HC. When Moorhead gets picked up as a HC by some mid-major this offseason, it will be amusing to see them return to earth (if they don't this year)

PSU is coming off a B1G championship, and James Franklin had already been recruiting pretty well.

But it is crazy how much one game completely changed the perception of their program. If PSU loses to OSU last year, I think the vibe around that program and James Franklin would be completely different. No B1G championship game or Rose Bowl with an 8-4 record may have actually cost Franklin his job.

That program should have been burned to the ground for what happened there, but the NCAA fell all over themselves to soften their penalty as soon as it was off most people's radar. And now they're snatching 4 star recruits out of our backyard, and they have the #2 recruting class in the country?  wtf?

For sure. Just take a look at where Alabama is right now. I doubt anyone is in panic mode down there. Michigan is setting up to have a really good class when all is said and done. NSD is in February and that is all that matters.

Michigan, OSU, Penn St, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Maryland, and Minnesota all seem to be making positive moves for their program. Northwestern seems to be treading water but have had mostly winning seasons lately. Iowa is Iowa and Illinois at least made an interesting coaching hire. Then you have programs on the downswing: MSU, Indiana, and Purdue. Not going to mention Rutgers. Bottom line is that the Big Ten programs are mostly cashing in their riches on better coaches and facilities. The conference is going to be extremely competitive into the future and that bodes well for our national prominence. Hopefully some of the spotlight can shift from the SEC, especially as ESPN continues to struggle. All that said, our talent level and coaching pedigree will keep us ahead of Penn St as long as it's Harbaugh v Franklin. I do not see them as a threat in the division. Last year seemed like a fluke and I doubt McSorley's 'the deep ball is always open if you throw it hard enough' will continue to be as successful now that their receivers are downgraded.

We had better talent and they still won the division, while we finished 3rd.  And their recruits certainly don't seem to think that last year was a fluke.  A lot more high level recruits are jumping on the Penn State bandwagon than on the Harbaugh bandwagon.

They won the division because they got steadily better as the season went on, while we got worse.  That's on the coach.  You can't use road games as an excuse forever.  A great coach beats tough teams on the road, and Harbaugh has yet to do that here.  If he can't do it this year, we're looking at another 3 loss season at least.  Then next year we have OSU and MSU on the road.  There is never going to be a season where we can do really well without beating a quality opponent in their own house.  Sooner or later we have to start simply winning those games, no excuses.

I fully blame Harbaugh for Wilton's injury And how in the hell did two years suddenly turn into forever. You forget Urb had a four year head start, inherited a hell of a roster and has only made it better. Harbaugh was faced with a far greater challenge at Stanford where he inherited a roster that couldn't beat Eastern Michigan. Within a few years, he hung over half a hundred on "the team of the decade." He'll get shit done.

Yeah, but it's much easier to win Iowa and Minnesota at home than win at home against Wisconsin and on the road against Iowa. Add on the fact that they also got the buckeyes at home at night. If we had that schedule, we win the big ten easily. So far Harbaugh is 6-3 in road games so it's not really that bad. We had issues at QB and at OL last year based on roster holes before Harbaugh got here. If we're not winning the big games in year 4 then yeah it's an issue but even Nick Saban lost to Florida and Utah in year 2.

You've posted several times about 3rd place and Franklin building momentum vs Harbaugh. Harbaugh's 10-3 twice is significantly better than franklin's 7-6 twice. A lucky 11-3 suddenly makes PSU a better program? PSU beat nobody on the road and lost to UM badly and an okay Pitt. PSU lucked out vs OSU at home and beat Iowa at home. We will throttle MSU for the foreseeable future. They are less of a threat that 4+ other B1G teams over the OSU is the challenge - if UM gets two freaky breaks like PSU did with blocked kicks then UM will crush OSU. PSU and a Franklin had a miraculous run. Do not confuse good luck with actual quality.

Well lets just sit back and see how well psu does in the horseshoe this year. I  do not think the game will even be close. There are no excuses for Michigan last year as they were the best team and should have won the big ten. We are talking recruiting and the people on the psu bandwagon who I believe will be stepping off by seasons end. I will tell you a Jim Harbaugh coached Michigan team will never lose by 39 points or get shutout.

You can have James Franklin as your coach, I think I will stick with Harbaugh. What the fuck are we debating anyways. Penn State is living in a fantasy right now and there is no chance they are winning the east again for a long long time. We beat these cheesedicks by 39 frickin points. This class doesn't count until February as far as I know. This thread is about Reed who was not a take for us so who cares.

We controlled our own destiny last year for the title and spanked them 49-10. Also, you missed where we had the #3 composite class last year and they had the #21. In 2016 we were #5 to their #20. The 2018 cycle is almost a year away from closing so don't assume anything yet, but we will for sure have had better recruiting classes than them in the last three years no matter the outcome of 2018.

It's actually 4 and 3 the other way. I think you are putting way too much emphasis on the number of stars a player has besdie their name, automatically considering a 3* less than desireable. Stars are a good indicator of production at the high school level but no way indicate in any manner what Brown has in store for his and what Harbaugh, Drevno and Hamilton have for theirs. Players, and you have to go no further than Jake Rudock for a prime example of how the same player can impact two teams in a very different manner. They offered these young men because they wanted them.

My point is you were probably not happy with either McDoom or Hudson due to their 3* rating, however the staff was aware of their potential and will help them achieve it. Would you want to toss those two back?

"yeah, but look at THOSE 3 stars who turned out to be really good" has been debunked so many times, I can't believe I have to do it again.  Recruiting rankings OVERALL correlate directly with success in college football.  That's absolutely indisputable and has been demonstrated over and over.  No, not EVERY 5 star ends up better than EVERY 4 star, and not EVERY 4 star ends up better than EVERY 3 star, but a team full of 4 stars is going to do better than a team full of 3 stars every time.  Stars do matter.  Period.  You don't need to go any further than this board to prove that.

As far as McDoom and Hudson, they haven't helped us win anything yet, so I will withhold judgement on just how wonderful they are.

Nice to see the Three Star Mafia (tm) back in full effect.

I realize that it requires a level of trust but I am willing to give Jim Harbaugh, Tim Drevno, Don Brown, Pep Hamilton etc. my trust that they know what they are doing on talent evaluation. I am doing this as both a donor and season ticket holder so if they are wrong I have something invested in their error. Nonetheless, I am willing to take that risk.

I realize that in taking this approach I am vulnerable to having to reconcile the talent evaluation of varied recruiting services not being in-line with the staff. I also acknowledge that it is possible that a kid might not want to come to Michigan for whatever reason and that's not on the coaches etc. I am still deferring to the coaches here.

I think these things are part of the bargain we make as Michigan fans (or any school, really).

FWIW, I follow recruiting but it's a winding road and I'd wait until next January before worry posts become necessary. Steel in the spine, fella.

As to McDoom, he looked rather wonderful last year from my seats...

So far this staff has not won the division, has not won the conference, has not beaten Ohio State and has not made the playoff, so I don't "trust" them to do any of those things in the future. I may hope they will and I may wish they would, but that's not remotely the same thing.

only 6 or 7 power 5 teams have better records in that time

2016's class finished 6th in the rankings

2017's 5th

2018's will probably finish averaging over .9

recruiting is fine

getting very little out of our 2014 & 2015 classes is the issue we have dealt with both season's Harbaugh has been here - when that gap is no longer there we'll be even better

We have already seen surprising and significant contribution from his first class, almost the entire second class will contribute greatly this year and there was actually very little room for contribution on the defensiive side of the ball. I offer the following as those who have and will contribute When this sinks in and when the 2017 and 2018 classes sink into the mind as to future production, the pieces I speak about as to coming together will be evident,

Evans, Higdon, Walker?,  DPJ, McDoom, Collins, Crawford, Black, Schoenle, Oliver, Perry, Wheatley, McKeon, Gentry, Filigia, Uliiziio, Bredeson, Oneewnu, Ruiz, Singleton, Hudson  Bush, Gary, Kemp, etc  I could add about another 7 to 8 players that have contributed or will be significant contributors this season, but I think you should be getting the picture about now Hell I didn't even list Peters  The numbers from the abbreviated 15 class is truly impressive When this group and there are a hell of a lot of very, very good fb players on the roster now, combine with 2017 and 2018, look the fuck out. Embrace it so you won't be shocked. We gonna kick some major ass mi brother.

Did you take the same approach with LeBron when he returned to Cleveland? I don't think so. The OP is correct as to stars being a good indicator and we are basically filled with 4 stars with a few 5s thrown in. With it so damn obvious that we could take nothing less than 4*, if it were our wont, I think it wise to begin to consider the 3 stars they not only offer but pursue hotly and let them know they're a take the minute they decide, as very good football players and projected by this staff to become as equally good as the majority of 4*s. It is difficult for me, seriously, to understand why it's so difficult for certain fans to not see that the number of pieces needed to put us in a position or winning 10-11 every season is getting so damn small. Seriously, it is as impossible for me not to see as it for you to believe otherwise., NLT 2018 do we start winning 10-11 annually(with strong likelihood it could start this season), thank all the departing jrs and srs for being indespensible in putting this train back on track and running smoothly, go play a bowl game and come back in the spring and reload with the next talented group. That's the way its going to be. I'm certain the majority here have no problems seeing this as well.
