Submitted by ItsHarambe on

Jim Harbaugh

Harbaugh was a 4 year letterman at Michigan. He started for the Wolverines as a redshirt sophomore when he played 5 games but broke his arm in a 19-7 loss to Michigan State.

Harbaugh then started all 12 games of the 1985 season when he lead the team to a 10-1-1 record and finished the season ranked second in the final AP poll. in 1985, Harbaugh led the nation in passing efficiency with a 163.7 rating.

In his final season as a quarterback at Michigan he started all 13 games and ended with a 11-2 record including a victory that he guaranteed over Ohio State.  The Wolverines finished the season ranked 8th in the final AP poll.

Harbaugh was drafted in the 1987 NFL Draft 27th overall by the Chicago Bears. In 1995, Harbaugh was selected as the UPI AFL - AFC Player of the Year, the PFWA NFL Comeback Player of the Year, and was selected for the Pro Bowl.

As a Coach, he was First an asistant coach for Western Kentucky before becoming the QB coach at the Oakland raiders. He got his first head coaching job at University of San Diego, then Stanford where he won the Orange Bowl and the Woody Hayes Trophy for the top collegiate coach. He then went to the 49ers where he brought the team to 3 consecutive NFC Championship games.

And now he is home.

With any luck, Jim Harbaugh will find out he is 12th in this poll and find a way to come back to be at least 6th in next year's poll, perhaps even higher depending on how the plan of improvement is laid out.

In all seriousness though, I am actually surprised that Harbaugh didn't fare a little better here too, but the way the original question was put to the blog, I am also not surprised given that we had the whole of Michigan athletics to choose from.

He is to this day my favorite QB and that's saying something. So #12 as a player alone is fine with me.

That 1984 season was on it's way to being a damned good season till he got hurt, just about every loss could have been a win after that. '85 and '86 we were a combined 21-3-1 and I thought we were the best team in the country at the end of '85 with him as a great leader at QB and one of our best defenses ever, kinda like the defense I expect us to have this year.

Disclaimer: If Drew Henson had stayed for his senior season like he should have instead of getting snookered by Steinbrenner to leave school he would have been my favorite M QB of all time, we would have been quite the special team that year in 2001 and would have beaten OSU and Tressel in his 1st season and who knows how that might have changed the ebb and flow of the rivalry.

In other words I'm still pretty pissed off at Drew for leaving.

Dear San Diego Mick:

Understand your dissapointment in my decision back in the day and you're right - had I stayed there is no doubt 2001 would've been a different story.  How bout next time I'm in SoCal we grab a beer and I'll tell you why I did what I did back then.  Better carve some time out though as I've got about 17 million reasons to share with you.

Thanks for your reply Drew, a beer sounds good. I'll also be able to eplain that a senior season as starting QB at Michigan can only happen once whereas baseball was there waiting for you had you decided to stay.

Furthermore, the special season you were in line for as QB in 2001 would have made you a top 5 or 10 pick in the NFL draft probably and you would have garnered way more than 17 mil as rookies got paid big time before the 2011 CBA.
