#10 Wrestling beats MSU for the 7th straight time

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

Was meaning to post this update from yesterday, but the WBB game update bumped it.

After a 1 point loss to #20 CMU on Thursday, #10 Michigan faced MSU at Jenison Field House.

MSU took a 9-4 lead after Youtsey was upset at 125 and Malik Amine lost a 6-0 lead.

The dual outcome was up in the air for a little bit.

But thanks to 3 straight BIG TIME performances by #2 Logan Massa, #8 Myles Amine and Ernest Battaglia who each earned bonus points, Michigan essentially clinched the victory heading into 197.

It would've taken two MSU pins to win. Thankfully Jackson Striggow picked up a 7-1 win at 197, because unfortunately the dreaded injury gorilla claimed another man.

In only his second match since bumping up to heavyweight due to depth issues due to injury (Adam Coon), Ayoola Olapo suffered what appeared to be a major quad injury and had to default, giving MSU 6 points.

More importantly, Michigan has now lost 6 would-be starters to season-ending injuries.

The Wolverines have now beaten the Spartans on the mat 7 straight times, increasing their massive gap in the all-time series to 69-35-5. This is the second-longest winning streak in the series by either team, the longest being 9 in a row by Michigan from 1985-1992.

Michigan moved to 8-5 and 4-4 in the B1G. The regular season wraps up with a road dual at #18 Wisconsin on Sunday at 1pm.

Doubtful he wins wrestle-offs.  He was a 165 but won a tourney this weekend at 174.  Don't think he gets by Amine, who has a very good shot at being an AA this year.  No way he gets by Massa at 165. The guy is on a different level.

So what are you thinking for next year?

125-??? (maybe incoming Freshman Drew Mattin)
133-Micic
141-(Profaci or Fisher)
149/157-Pantaleo & Malik Amine
165-Massa
174-Myles Amine
184-Abounader
197-Striggow
Hwt-Coon

That's a good lineup, but I don't know about B1G/NCAA championship level.  Certainly the best Michigan has had in quite a while.

Duals means that the results are measured on the score of one team versus another.  So "team duals" is a tournament where entire teams wrestle.  Most tournaments (including NCAA) are individual tournaments, with teams assigned points for individual outcomes.  Here in PA HS wrestling there are team championships and individual championships, and by using the individual points a team will also come out of the individual championships with the most points. These are rarely the same teams.  In NCAA tournament, this is how the team champion is decided.

By definition, all the matches of one team versus one other team are duals.
