...Roadrunners with a start up football program under Larry Coker is on track to become an FBS team.

UTSA plays its first season in 2011, when it will compete in NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (the old I-AA) independent. The Roadrunners will play another independent FCS schedule again in 2012 before counting as Football Bowl Subdivision opponent in 2013 then as a full FBS program in 2014.

“We want to be the team for South Texas,” Coker said. “There is no Division I or professional team down here. We have a 60,000-seat stadium (Alamodome) and a 30,000-member student body. We have a lot to offer all of South Texas. We want all kids from the Valley to see us as the place to go get their education. It’s a great opportunity for both of us. There’s a lot of pride in the Valley and I respect that.”

What's wrong with becoming 1-A teams? Are you saying that, 15 years ago, you would have been against Boise State joining 1-A? I don't get the logic, brah.

Is it only a matter of time before Oakland gets a football team?

I took a class there one summer semester.  At the on-campus eating-type area I overhead some department heads talking about how OU is growing and will soon be larger than Eastern.  They mentioned purchasing some land for I think nursing.

I know it's majorly a communter campus, but with the amount of people that live in the area, you gotta think they would easily sell out football games.  Hell, they'll sell out football games with local high school teams alone attending.

Anyone from/going to OU have any insights?

What I have heard: It's a restriction on the land that was gifted to the university from the Dodge family.  No football or they could lose all their land.

No sure how long that continues though (rule against perpetuities and all).
