Slippery Rock has actually played at Michigan Stadium twice -- in 1979 and 1981. The '79 game drew a Division II record of 61,143 fans, showing just how popular the school became with Michigan fans back in the day.
That's actually the reason why, but the author failed to explicitly say so.

before marketing Genius Don Canham thought to invite Slippery Rock to play a game in Michigan Stadium while UM was on the road, getting some additional gate receipts and concession money for the UM Athletic Dept and paying both Pennsylvania schools more than they could make at home.
Why Slippery Rock State? Humorous name.
