"This interview is not helping," said Robinson. "Now, who wants Cap'n Greg's Gravel Omelet Surprise? The surprise is the gravel!"

The key to understanding this

The key to understanding this coachspeak interview is this part of the article:

Two years later, he is coaching high school ball and doing radio, still hoping to get back into big-time football.

That means that when GERG says, "That was a difficult time, and I’m just trying to move on now," he really means, "I can't believe I let that stupid mother f***er make me run that bulls**t scheme that cost me my f***ing career. Where's my f***ing beaver?!?!?"

I like the "I wish things would have gone differently"

Dude, you were the guy running the defense. It went as directed by you. Who are you wishing for something to have changed?!?

In GERG's defense, the 3-3-5

In GERG's defense, the 3-3-5 was almost certainly not his idea.

Nothingness

GERG...

He still exists?  That episode seems so far in the past....

A nightmare from childhood...

Buried Memory with a stuffed beaver.

and yet...

Best of luck to Scott Shafer at Syracuse.

Back In The NFL?

Getting back in the NFL?  After recently having coached long snappers and helped with the defense at a California high school?

By all accounts, he’s a decent man, but "Gergian" defenses in the NFL ranked 24th with the Denver Broncos in 2000, and then, with the Kansas City Chiefs, 23rd in 2001, 32nd in 2002 and 29th in 2003 when he last coached in the NFL.

His most-recent college defenses were ranked 57th (using Paul Pasqualoni’s players) in 2005, 107th in 2006, 111th in 2007 and 101st in 2008 at Syracuse; and 82nd in 2009 and 108th in 2010 at Michigan.

In those ten seasons, six of his defenses finished in the bottom 20% of all teams. The one "good" season out of those ten (2005) saw his defense ranked just barely in the top half of all NCAA FBS teams.

Wouldn't think that there are any NFL teams clamoring for his services.  And yet, maybe one NFL team is thinking like this:

There was this press conference where a coach said "Vince Lombardi couldn't fix this Defense". One year later that D rank goes up 100 spots in rank. Feck you 3-3-5 ,feck you stuffed animals.

Still in all...

I'm glad the guy isn't bitter and bashing Michigan and Rich Rod and everyone else... which he could be doing.  Its nice to see that he isn't making excuses or pointing fingers and is just saying "it was a tough situation and I'm looking ahead."  He's not being a Kiffin about it at least.

Sometimes I think back to all

Sometimes I think back to all the ways I tried to rationalize the GERG hire when it first happened.  I can't believe what the mind can convince itself of when it wants so so bad to believe it.

GERG Sarcasm

"It’s pretty cool," Robinson said. "I’ve never coached high school before, but I've really enjoyed the experience. I'm driving 80 miles roundtrip on my own nickel, and I'm loving it."

Wow, sarcastic much, GERG?
