The opposite of surprise: Bela Karolyi is an insane taskmaster who almost destroyed Ray's desire to compete. Also, Ray was in Cirque Du Soleil for a few years. That's an eye catcher on the resume.

...nice article.  Elise Ray's experience demonstrates how close to the edge elite athletes perform.  Every little thing is magnified and a 5 centimeter mistake on an apparatus setting can make all the difference.  Or an overbearing coach.  Or a cheating competitor.  Or all those things. 

Kudos to Elise for making the absolute most out of her Michigan experience and kudos to Coach Plocki for recognizing that in Elise's case, TLC was the right approach. 

Congratulations to Elise and her USA teammates for a well deserved Olympic bronze medal.

If I recall correctly, John U Bacon's book about Cirque De Soleil might talk about Elise Ray's participation in the show.
