How this happened is a story that gets kind of into politics -- not the D! and R! kind, mind you, but it's got a lot of lobbying and big money getting spent to subvert the market, and that kind of stuff. Suffice to say that given the current structure of the cable TV business, putting Michigan on super-elite-mega tier and Cornell on a basic channel makes a TON of business sense, and that fighting the good fight for a la carte channel selection at the dawn of Internet TV would be like trying to impeach [name of president you don't like] on his last day in office.
