The change in tone is because Fivethirtyeight is no longer limiting itself to 1) just Nate doing the writing and 2) areas where journalism is consistently awful, namely sports and politics. And he's hired some really, really bad writers. The climate guy is probably the worst. I haven't been impressed at all with the launch.
Grantland was pretty bland/bad at its launch too, and now it's probably one of the better sports sites out there. I think this is something to look at again in 4-5 months, and see how the site is going
I don't disagree. Hopefully Silver takes the criticism seriously and works to improve the site like Simmons did. So far his response has been to be snarky and self-righteous though, which is not encouraging.
