but file this under MGoBoard and not diaries, I'd say.
Why aren't we ranked?
The rankings just came out and Michigan did not crack the top 25. Does this make any sense? According to collegrpi.com, Michigan has the 5th hardest schedule and an RPI of 16. Shouldn't we be ahead of MSU? They looked absolutely awful vs UNC, lost by more points to Maryland than we did (in spite of having a home game and Mich having to play at MD), and their most impressive win is against a 5-3 OK State team. Compare that to a Michigan team that beat UCLA and an undefeated Duke team. I don't think it's anywhere close to compare the two teams' accomplishments. And look at Kansas. They have a better name recognition and tradition, but the only good team they played all year (Syracuse), they lost to.
Do voters actually watch games, or do they just move teams up and down based on last week's rankings? I know it is probably not worth fussing over, because it will all sort itself out by the end of the year, but can you really blame me for wanting to see Michigan get a little respect from the voters? I mean, they still haven't announced which bowl the football team is going to. I don't know what the delay is for on that one.
Ah, you're probably right. It's my first time posting, I'll put in the MGoBoard next time.
for the record, since i don't know how long you've read this blog, but the diaries are more of analysis section. I think it's intended for pieces that could probably qualify for the main board where Brian posts all his stuff. Your post was message board content, which is what the MGoBoard is for. Nice to have you on the site though. I hope I didn't insult you by saying you were posting in the wrong area.
I don't think this is nitpicky at all.
Too much garbage (not to say your post is garbage, mcfors) gets put in diaries. These are people that don't realize that their material is better-suited as forum content.
I'm looking forward to the ratings system for exactly this reason. Hopefully Brian will up the minimum word count for diaries too (any numbskull with a keyboard can ramble on for 200 words without a coherent point).
when MSU fans complain about Michigan getting that preseason rank that's just on name or prestige or whatever, we can point to this as it is the exact same thing only in basketball.
Yeah, but in football the polls actually carry weight. In basketball they are irrelevant.
worry about what happens on the court and the rest will take care of itself.
popularity contest, and part power poll. If I had to be honest, I don't think we're one of the 25 best teams in college basketball yet, we're too inconsistent. We could be.
Our resume is certainly impressive, and is reflected in the RPI ranking of 15.
I don't read much into early-season polls, especially basketball. If this team keeps playing like it did against Duke and UCLA, the rankings will come. A top-20 RPI is far more impressive at this juncture than the rankings.
Being ranked on December 8 is NO big deal, believe me. Get in the top 25 on March 8, then we're talking something. I totally agree with the RPI issue; that's what is bigger right now.
As far as your last sentence goes, on your post, what exactly are you smoking?
well, you're preaching to the choir here. we're all michigan fans so i'd think that the overwhelming majority of us agree with you and think we should be ranked. I definitely think we should be top 25 at the least.
they're hoping we blow a couple of games so they can write us off as a team in the right place at the right time imo.
no need to worry.
...don't mean jack. Wait until B10 play starts before you even consider looking at the polls. Sure, it'd be nice to see Michigan in the top 25, but let's not get carried away yet. Savannah State anyone? Let us win a few more games we're supposed to win, by a comfortable margin, before we all start beating our chests.
Make no mistake, though, we've got the groundwork laid for a very successful season...
IN JOHNNY BEILEIN I TRUST
I honestly think not being ranked is a good thing. Only thing you get right now by being ranked is a bigger bullseye on your head. Opposing teams, I believe, tend to prep better and play harder against ranked opponents. I'll take being a sleeper until it comes time to seeding in the tourney.
