What, Exactly, is Rich Rodriguez Building?

Submitted by The Barking Sp… on
I've got no typical Scout disclaimer to begin with. You know, when a guy says, "Now don't get me wrong, I LOVE me some Rich Rodriguez. I think we're gonna win the next 14 national championships. I now drink 4 gallons of chocolate milk every day. I haven't washed my underwear since we beat the Minnesota Golden Goophers. Charlie Weis is fat. BUT..." I simply question why people are giving Rich Rodriguez so much of the benefit of the doubt. You can call me negative. you can call me a "Closet Sparty," you can call me a "H8TER," but I don't care. Charlie Weis, Jim Tressel, and Mark Dantonio--the coaches of Michigan's most hated rivals--all won with with another guy's players. They all came in and implemented different systems, brought all new assistants, all of them are assholes, and yet--they ALL won with players they did not recruit (but they did add some of their own). And all of them did even better in Year 2. You can argue that Notre Dame fell off over the last two years--but at least Charlie Weis is recruiting the hell out of (whatever you recruit the hell out of), and Ohio State is stockpiling talent in a big way. They also have this one guy named Terelle Pryor. And Dantonio? All he is doing is winning over provincial Michigan and provincial, sniping, self-righteous Michigan Media members and the perception is that MSU is THE program in Michigan. Yeah, Michigan high school football may not put out tons of talent, but Michigan has benefitted from being the Big Dawg in our great state for 40 years, and many, MANY Michigan stars have come from My Michigan. But overnight, MSU has seemingly usurped UM in the hearts and minds of Michigan, and Dantonio has, to this point, won a sort of "culture war" with UM. He tutored under the all-time passive agrressive genius in Columbus, and he is indeed making the state of Michigan greener. So where does that leave Rich Rodriguez, Michigan football, and Michigan football fans? Well, in my opinion, this goes way deeper than just shouting "We'll be back!" "Wait'll Rich Rod gets his players!" Let's look at it from strictly a football standpoint for this first "blog" of mine. 2008: Rich Rod is hired. UM implements some sort of "spread" for the Capital One Bowl and beats Florida. Everyone happy. Everyone clap. Everyone say: "Where has this been? See what we can do? Look at what Rich Rod did at West Virginia! Now, with MICHIGAN TALENT--LOOK OUT BEEYOTCHEZZ!" And when Rich Rodriguez holds Lloyd's last recruiting class pretty much intact (losing only a tight end and a drop back QB)--and adding SIX players to that class in the 11th hour--it was party time! Let's fast forward past last football season to now. The recruiting class from 2008, for those who care to notice, is not looking so great, expecially for a team so thin. We have seen five players leave the team. A sixth, Justin Feagin, may never see the field again. The horribly named Mike Cox is a huge question mark. Even Darryl Stonum causes people to wonder. People, that's over 25% of the class. 2009 saw a great class come in. Eligibility questions aside, it is a good mix of real talent, offense and defense, and diamonds in the rough. And Rodriguez again showed great 11th-hour prowess with the signings of Warshington, Robinson, Lewan, Roh and Lalota. But with so many departures during the first-year transition, and the attrition already seen from the 2008 class, 2009 and 2010 have to be HOME RUNS for a team that is thin with defensive talent and depth. When Scout posters began hating on star gazing, forty times, and Michigan high school talent, they all shouted in unison: "Look at the offer sheets!" Well I did--and it ain't pretty. To wit: Four---FOUR of the verbals from this class have no other offers. Outside of Christian Pace, MRob, Ricardo Miller, Jeremy Jackson, Kenny Wilkins, and Devin Gardner, the other schools offering UM recruits are these (according to Scout): Army, Bowling Green, Indiana, Stanford, Louisville, Vanderbilt, Duke, Wake Forest, Syracuse, Minnesota, and Tulane. I have to admit--that is an impressive list--if you are going after possible future Rhodes Scholars and guys who can go out on a date with a coed and not even think about buying a condom. But Big Time national championships? Not so much. And go ahead and color me not terribly awed by a 6'2, 256 lbs offensive lineman in Pace. Can you say, "Another turbulent offseason splattered with multiple decommits?" I hope so. Now we stand on the precipice of the 2009 season with two true freshmen at the most important position in the world (yes, even more important than the head cheerleader for the Dallas Cowboys). We stand on the precipice of the 2009 season hoping that Brandon Graham and Mike Martin don't even get a hangnail. We stand on the precipice of a 2009 season which will see our beloved Wolverines go on the road to Iowa, Michigan State and Wisconsin. We stand on the fuck that. Notre Dame, Ohio State, and Penn State are all coming to town. We have our THIRD defensive coordinator in THREE years. I know you all want to think that Rodriguez is "building something"--and so do I. But I'd like to know what it is, and I'd like to know if you really think he has the time. 2009 and 2010 have to be all-time recruiting classes. We need them for talent and depth. We can't have half this class being "flyers"--if 25% of the guys you really DO want wash out--what are the odds with guys that NOBODY wants? It is scary. Expecially if you are a guy who, like me, is a real loser with no other identity than to put on my Michigan jammies and go to the mall on Sunday with my chest all puffed out, just daring some fucking pathetic fucktard to give me some shit. Of course, if he does, I'll rear back and say, "Hey, I was just robbed and the police gave me this stuff to wear because the goddam robber even took my clothes and stuffed them in a basket he had attached to his iron lung."

Man, I can see I've unleashed some pent-up anger there! What the hell is going on in their secret WLA Treefort? No Barwis Porn left? Rerun after rerun of boring "Wait'll Rich Rod gets his guys" bullshit? You guy sneed to come down from that treefort. Get in touch with some real people. I know you guys are really cool and all (and probably have T-shirts to prove it) but you are getting ridiculous now. And when jamiemac wakes up after sleeping off another brain freeze from breaking the WLA Treefort record by drinking 48 lemon-lime slushies, tell him that I said Virginia Tech kicked Rich Rod's ass 4 out of 6, but it was nice of him to dance around those four ass kickings just to talk about the two times Rich Rod lucked out against the Hokies.

Why did you decided to focus on 3 of the literally 120 people who think you're a giant choad?

Because you guys, I think, are the uh, "coolest" of the Kool Aid Krews of rabid, "don't dare say nothing 'bout my Michigan or I'll call you a bunches of names" Michigan fan base. And because I got kicked out of your Treefort, I guess, and didn't even have a trial or a hearing or something. I'm guessing you guys are big Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn fans. Probably hold secret meetings and all about killin' buckeyes and sparties instead of Injuns and sich--but the premise is the same.

Who said anything about "gay"??? And if there is ONE thing that I take as a ture insult--it's that I might be running out of material. If I find your secret lil WLA Treefort and you guys happen to be gone, say, taking your Big Wheelz out for a spin, knocking off neighborhood lemonade stands or something, that thing is coming down. I am sure there are all kinds of electrical and other code violations--and I know a lot of inspectors in your area. We''l red tag that fucker and have it condemned--and that means it'll be torn down at least sometime within the next 20 years.

But seriously - I tried to respond to your point. In one breath, you complain about the recruits we have that have mediocre rankings and poor offer lists, then complain that we didn't have room for three-star Holmes Unuwkaife, who has offers from us, SMU, and Texas Tech. Explain.

Well, i just sleeped off my slushie buzz, and a little fuzzy, but I have enough clarity to know that once again your facts are wrong. RichRod coached from 2001 to 2005 in the Big East with Va Tech on their slate. Yes, he had a losing record at 2-3, not 2-4 as you say....and when they were in the Big East together, WVA won out 2-1.. But, three of those games (overall) were in Blacksburgh and most would expect in any rivalry over a five year span that whomever had more home game likely has the better head-to-head record. Losses were in 01, 04 and 05 with wins in 02 and 03. The '04 loss came on a blocked field goal at the buzzer. So, RichRod was a play away from having a winning record at 3-2. It is no solace, I am sure, but put it this way: RR was in the middle of building the program in his own image. Va Tech was already an established top-10 program. Yet RR was able to quickly compete on even terms with this program. I wonder what he would have done in 2006, 07, and 08 when he had WVA at an even higher peak, but sadly their rival Hokies were no longer on the slate. I am confident he would have held his own and won a few of those....he already got them on even footing, but his porgram was even better in those ensuing years. Same goes with games against Da U or BC during those years? Given how Miami fell off at the end of the Coker Era, its hard not to think Pat White and Co would have wiped the floor with them, but that is just conjecture. I have no question that as he molds UM on the field in his image that we will see the same dynamic happen....and it will occur sooner, rather than later. But here is what our specific argument in this monster thread boils down to: You asserted doubt about RR's ability to win in the Big 10, even with his players, because OSU, PSU and MSU are not bolting to another conference. My argument was RR more than held his own against the Big East defectors, in fact having a 2-1 record against a top 10 team that eventually left the league. That was during the early stages of his tenure when he was still crafting the program. At the time, those eventual defectors were playing at peak levels for those programs, while WVA was still climbing. And, yet, there he was winning and competing with top-10 teams in years 2 and 3. No offense, but I think have more evidence on my side than you do, especially if you continue to produce incorrect facts.

There can be NO QUESTIONING of anything RICH RODRIGUEZ. Otherwise, personal attacks ensue! Good catch. I refuse to sink any further into the swill of name calling with idiotic kool aid drinkers who are willing to blindly follow Rich Rodriguez off a cliff. Expecially because I don't REALLY believe he will lead them off the cliff. Back ot one of my original questions, which I'll answer for myself: If UM and fans DO have patience--I am sure Rich Rodriguez will build the program up--I really do. But therein lies the rub: If this year is poop (and it really could be) and next year shows up with anything less than a BCS bowl, what then? I'll await sane replies.

What, exactly, is the problem with waiting to see how he does this year before going apeshit nuts about the terrible job he's done? You realize they haven't actually played any games this season?

The Barking Sp…

You know, it just never struck me as "apeshit nuts" to point out that the current recruiting class is a bit of a question mark, and to point out that most of the recruits aren't highly sought after by other programs. Also, it didn't strike me as apeshit nuts to compliment RichRod on his closing abilities and the great 2009 class. Weird, I know, but that's just me. And I didn't think it was apeshit nutty to make the decision NOT to rehash all the bullshit from The Horror of 2008. If that's crazy, then I don't wanna be sane. And it's not apeshit nuts to point out that our two-deep on defense is, well, not gonna scare anybody and has the smart UM fan, as I said, hoping that Brandon Graham and Mike Martin stay healffy. What I did forget to point out is that our linebackers look pretty weak and we are paper-thin there as well. Other than that, and the freshman quarterback thingy, shit man, UM just might win it all!

I Genuinely believe that the vast majority of fans here r not "blindly" following "the great" RR. My point and I think most of the other people on here was it's takes a little time to implement change. Obviosly a 3-9 season is something no fan wants to expereince ever again (or even close to that). But for cryin out loud, 1 SEASON!!!! Brand new staff, s&c, players, system, etc. 1 season!!!! And if your worried about RR getting enough time to get things in order, you'd better hope the people that make the decisions @ UM aren't as hysterical as u. Just because we don't want to fire RR or doubt his ability to coach (because the evidence and track record is there) doesn't mean we're all cool aid drinkers.

Hey Barking Sphincter, great to hear from you, even if it's controversial. I want to know how the hell do you get kicked out of the WLA? I thought all you had to do was write inane articles. I'll just leave it at this: I think people tend to underestimate how bare the cupboard really was. The defense seemed to be a bit mismanaged, but the LBs and safeties were pretty bad. The change in the system really didn't seem to work well. And that's just defense. I don't know as much about Pete Carroll and Jim Tressel, but I'll assume that they had experienced players to work with. Paul Johnson already had a top dual-threat QB to work with in Nesbitt. Brian Kelly had that guy who didn't get the extra year (what's his name?). Point is, Lloyd Carr didn't do the best job of recruiting for the post Henne-Long-Hart era, and any recruits he did have left because of coaching turnover--that's bound to happen. Michigan had just lost 5 of its most important offensive players of the decade. Combine that with attrition and injured veteran RB's, and it's pretty unfair to expect so much from RR when he has just about all first-year starters on offense, including inexperienced QBs fit for another type of offense, one of which is a walk-on, and scrubs on the OL. He was rebuilding with scraps last year.

Well, there is at least a little bit of ambiguity over this whole "We kicked the Barking Sphincter out"--I think maybe this was kind of a "retroactive" kicking out. What I really want to see is when the paperwork was filed with the FCC. I mean, I DO have an intranets presence. I know people. I write a thing or two. So there should be some sort of "paper trail"--even if it is an electronic paper trail. Anyway, I think they are just mad at me for writing an honest, insightful, funny, against-the-grain look at what Rodriguez is doing. I suppose that at this very moment they are in the super-secret WLA Treefort deciding what attack manuevers they'll now come out with. But as I say--it is a battle of wits; they are unarmed. And if they hurl so many insults and rocks as to blot out the sun--I shall fight after I get drunk, like most people.

I went to Michigan. I can upload a photo of my diploma hanging on the wall if photos can be uploaded here. Going to the school doesn't give me any high horse about being a fan of the team though. Most people who didn't go to the school know and care way more about it than I do.

considering the only goal is attention i wouldn't call it failure (175ish posts) but it does prove the people on the front page who called troll correct. it's a brilliant piece of social research though. he went to a place where fans of something congregate, deliberately wrote something that was carefully crafted to instigate shit, and then lols as, shockingly, shit happens. that's probably worth a PHD somewhere. lord knows a midwestern realtor could probably use another degree these days.

Any pub is good pub! Wow--you are going to singlehandedly make me famous! What's the record for responses to a diary? My next one, which will be crafted probably this weekend after enough beer is consumed, will surely break it. And while you guys are all there checking it out, go to WTF Central and scope out my Zip Goshboots Morning Constitutional--some things I wrote for that forum awhile back when I had more time. Now that I'm busier, I don't have as much time, you see.
