Welcome to last year

Submitted by SFBayAreaBlue on
So I'm writing this with about 10 minutes left in the 4th quarter and I can't bear to watch anymore.  If they can pull out a miracle down 22 points and looking like crap, I'll do Mgopostpenance.  But OMG, this game f'ing sucks.

Why does it suck?  Because unlike the close losses to MSU and Iowa where the team showed progress, this is a major regression.  It's not even 'take one step forward, two steps back' this is moonwalking back to last year.

I feel sorry for Brandon Graham to be getting very little help from the rest of the team in this game.  Oh, and zoltan is doing ok.  oooooh boy.

This game sucks because all of the things that went wrong today are things we've seen before.  These are all lingering problems that just haven't been corrected.  Well at least we haven't fumbled a punt or a kickoff... ... YET.

Let's take stock.

  • Molk and Odoms get dinged up, so grady (19) promplty drops two passes to kill a drive
  • Denard throws a pick when we were running well, one play after he overthrew koger
  • Tate is throwing everything low and looks like a nancy boy out there in the cold.  Someone needs to take him to a fraternity and have the boys tie him up to the delta gamma anchor all night without any clothes on so he gets used to the cold.
  • Carlos fumbled
  • Denard fumbled
  • Tate holds the ball too long
  • Bad snap costs us a safety
  • Bad snap costs us a touchdown
  • Ezeh one on one is nearly = DEATH, and the safeties split and had no idea about staying as 'deep as the deepest'
  • Mike Williams missed a tackle
  • Mike Williams missed a tackle
  • Mike Williams missed a tackle
  • We're giving their receivers too much room on the goal line
  • They could run bubble screens and 0 yard hitches for 7-8 yard gains all day long.
  • We can't complete the fricken flare
Did I miss anything?  It's like every little negative thing we've been having here and there this season all decided to take one big dump on the field at the same time today.

Oh yeah, and we had a ton of stupid penalties from the O-line, holding, misalignment, false start.  Today we looked undisciplined as a team.

I'm completely disgusted.  I'm not saying the sky is falling, but damn, we can't be digging ourselves into holes and hope to win against good teams.  We'll probably win the next two weeks and be 7-3 with two tough games to finish the season.  Right now it's looking like 7-5 which is what people were saying before the season and represents a huge step forward from last year.

But still.  This game sucks.  At least it's only one game.

This one was hard to watch. It's funny you titled your post as such. I was griping to my wife during the 3rd quarter, saying the only good explanation for this game is that I just went back in time to last year. Ok, so maybe there are better explanations, but I couldn't see them through my disappointment. Again, hard to watch. But you're right, 7-5 still looks possible and it's what I was hoping for before the season started. For me, it's harder to watch because of the 4-0 start. But you know what? 5-3 is already better than 3-9. On to Champaign.

The team has regressed. By game 8 the team has gotten worse (sans playing a cupcake team). And next year the team will be worse, especially on the D with Graham leaving. Looks like we'll have to wait for 2011 to see if RR can put it together. It's going to be a LONG time till then.

You say we have regressed but I am having a hard time figuring out what you are using for a basis for that statement. I am sure you are saying that our play has seemed to go steadily down hill from the beginning of the year, but if you look at our competition, it has steadily improved since then as well. Each game has brought a better opponent (save the DSU game) and yes, I think PSU is better than Iowa so I am not forgetting that Iowa is ranked higher. I think the seeming regression is simply a result of the better teams we have played of late. Just my e-pinion.

It seemed like today was a day of poor personnel choices. Molk had no reason to be in the game. I'd prefer him not playing when he only had one week of practice on his knee. Denard was put in at a bad time. Cissoko was FINALLY put in to dam the gushing bleed caused by Mike Williams being at Safety. Warren just... idk what the fuck he was doing, his head wasn't in the game, which is a first. Penalty-wise, I disagree. Besides the one holding call and the roughing the kicker (which wasn't really roughing the kicker), we didn't have any penalties worth mentioning.

True. This one game really, really sucked. Thank you for not projecting this suckitude onto the entire season. But today sucked and it was made worse by PSU totally not sucking.

We need Molk back healthy really bad. Next year the oline will be more athletic and better. The qb's will be experienced. This is what people expected right? We knew we were not there yet.

But the broadcasters said he seemed to be moving/bouncing around on the sideline post-injury. Hopefully he is alright. Also, after finally watching the replay (I was scared to at first because those kind of knee injuries are just horrific) it looked like he got his legs out of the way in time to avoid any serious hyper-extension or injury (fingers crossed).

This isn't anything like last year. Last year we lost to Toledo. This year we've lost to two highly ranked teams and a likely underrated MSU team. Today was ugly, but we were outmatched on both lines. We're currently a 3 loss team, we play Illinois next week, and unless something goes horribly wrong, we should be bowl eligible very soon.

things have been going horribly wrong against non-DSU teams. Something needs to go VERY right for this team to be bowl eligible, because it's just as likely in my mind that we lose out as grab 3 or 4 more wins. am I pessimistic at this point? yeah, but that's kinda the reality we're living in. We SHOULD be able to beat Illinois and Purdue, but that means nothing if we can't execute. I'm hoping, and think we can win 1 of the next 2 and maybe get it up enough to pull an upset against Wisconsin or OSU. but that may be a reach.

First, you're right that we lost to #13 team with a lot of talent, and playing against Illinois should go better, (I write SHOULD). Second, I think most of the pessimism, (I counted myself among them until I chilled out for a while) isn't *that* we lost, but *how* we lost. As in, we not only got owned, we looked totally inept. I'm not pessimistic about it, I'm bewildered by it. I would have expected to see more progress this far into the season. Third, why on earth were you reading spartan tailgate?

But can't you see this game was what it is - an aberrant blip? Sure, we sucked. Terribly. But this game isn't emblematic of how the team played in their first 7 games. They played significantly better against MSU, and significantly better against Iowa. This was horrible game, but I don't think it's indicative of the team's overall caliber. I'm not trying to excuse it, I'm trying to make you take this in context larger than "just yesterday".

Except for the lightening-fast comeback against MSU, and one good drive against Iowa late in the 4th, (by DRob) our offense didn't exactly look like world-beaters in those games. Frankly, I think the issue is injuries more than a lack of talent or focus. The bigger mystery is the defense. They looked serviceable, (i.e. not good, but not terrible) against Iowa. Yesterday, they were plain awful.

i agree with the OP. usually, there's at least SOMETHING to take stock in. some kind of spark or hope. there was nothing in this game, other than BG's standard excellent effort. this was an awful game. it really was a flashback to last year. I've been a staunch Tate supporter from the beginning, but he really started to annoy me today. I think it's because I see a total lack of progress in his game. Since I feel the same way about Denard, i'm starting to become concerned with the coaching of these guys. I quite understand that they are freshmen and all, but usually you see some signs that things are starting to click. I know it's unpopular to criticize RR around here, but things are definitively not happening with these QBs. So yeah, I'm pretty annoyed by this one. What annoys me even more is people looking at the schedule and STILL calling Illinois an 'easy win'? REALLY? We SHOULD win, sure, but I'd bet the house that they will smack us in the mouth next week, and I wish I could be more confident that we'd strike back. we looked like a flimsy, tired & wet football squad out there today. I can't believe more people haven't seemed to care that our passing game is totally without a true receiving threat. Our leading wideout right now, Odoms, is a tiny target who MAYBE averages 3 catches a game. 3. That won't work. Opposing D coordinators don't need to know the names of any of our receivers when they draw up a gameplan. And that concerns me. The ineptitude of our guys to make routine catches bothers the crap out of me. It's like our wideouts assume someone else will make a play or, eh, the ball's probably not coming my way anyway, what's the point. I think mathews could be an excellent posession guy, but without a number one downfield/playmaking wideout, he's been largely ineffective. YARRRRGHHHH. i'm out. i hope this team can pull it together to eek out another win. anything more than 2 wins would be shocking, b/c this looks like a team without a shred of confidence at the moment. one positive: I'm glad RichRod left in Tate in garbage time. even though that series ended in the bad INT, we desparately needed to try to get any kind of rhythm/practice in the passing game.

I noticed the lack of it, too. Its typical of young teams (and some older ones). That safety really seemed to take the wind out of their sails. As though their inner voices were saying, "Oh, shit, here we go again ..." From that point on, doubt creeps in, and its all downhill from there.

I'm about 7 El Salvadorean beers deep (surprisingly delicious) so maybe that has raised my optimism meter, but after about 5 minutes of screaming terrible things about Carlos Brown and his family at the screen (that fumble gutted me) I think I'm able to put a positive spin on the game. The reason this game is so frustrating is because all that is keeping us from beating very good teams like Iowa and Penn State are self-inflicted wounds (bad snap for safety, putting the ball on the ground, dropped passed, etc.). The fact that this is the case so early in a massive rebuilding project (and yes, this is a massive rebuilding project when we still have roughly 75 scholarship players on the roster) is a testament to the players and the coaches we have. If we had won today we would have been looking at a likely 9-3 (if not 10-2) record and a big time bowl game. The fact that we all kind of expected it (even uber-realist Brian picked the Blue), shows just how far we've come in such a short time. This team has two true freshman quarterbacks, a couple of physically outmatched OT's (don't mean to bag on presumably great guys like Ortmann and Dorrestein, but under normal circumstances they would have no business starting at Michigan), underclassmen throughout the receiving corps, and underclassmen (plus a RS freshman walk-on) throughout the defense. There is also pretty much zero depth (except maybe at RB). We shouldn't expect a BCS bowl bid from this group (but the fact that they gave us that glimmer of hope is AWESOME). Also, Notre Dame is STILL our bitch. Now let's just beat the Buckeyes and we'll all remember this as the super-fun roller coaster season that brought us back to the top (I'll stay positive even if we don't, but goddamnit beating those cocksuckers again would be fun).

I agree, overall there are positives in this. If Graham had somehow picked up that punt and run it in this game could have ended up being close, despite the astounding collection of bad mistakes on our part. Sometimes, especially with a team this young, things just go horribly wrong on some days. As to coaching, one positive I see in RR is this team never seems to quit - that says a lot about him and how he motivates.

I was about to get on here and say all the same things. All the good feelings from the Iowa game got sand kicked in their collective faces. I think the main problem was that I had higher expectations coming into this game and that is why it feels like such a huge step backwards. I know, freshman, young team, new coordinator, grumble, grumble, grumble. But did they complete a pass in the second and third quarters? Okay, 24 hours to be ticked off and then it's take a hot shower and get ready for next week. (It did feel like last year's team sans the first drive, just no hope of getting anything right.) Okay, I'm done. Really, I'm good.

This offense has really struggled in Big Ten play. Inconsistent at best. They took a big step backwards today. I dont know why they cant catch the ball, fumble it often and blow coverages. I suppose that coaching has something to do with that...but how much?

It was a horrible second half, but I do think this shows how good PSU can be on defense and offense when everything falls together for them. This PSU team was a far cry from what we've seen all year, but I think this is closer to how they'll play going forward than the first few games of the year. This was a probable loss at the beginning of the season, and I see no reason to discount that now.

Did not see this one coming!!!! I felt this would be the game where it started to all come together. Instead, it all fell apart and we looked as bad as last year. I have a few paranoid concerns going forward, maybe some of you can help talk me off the ledge and validate which worries are realistic and which are reactionary..... 1) Is it possible that all this southern speed and California/ florida qbs are going to continue struggling in wet cold weather? This game was eerily similar to last year's ND game. Do warm climate kids have trouble handling the ball in crappy weather or is this a myth? 2) Outside of Brandon Graham and Donovan Warren the defense is terrible. I have hope for a couple of the younger players...Roh and Williams...but are we are in trouble there for years to come? 3) Do we need more plodding meat-heads to compete in the Big Ten? At least on the lines it appears the answer is yes...PSU was running up the middle on us for 5 yards a pop. 4) Does the DR experiment need to end? I know RR promised him a shot at qb, and Tate is injured and not playing well right now, but it’s obvious that DR is not college qb ready. We need to find other ways to get him the ball. 5) Does this game hurt us in recruiting? It's already been a tough recruiting year. 6) I was one of the loudest when it came to criticizing Lloyd in the last 5 years of his tenure. I gave RR a free pass last year, and in many ways just wanted to see improvement this year before making any judgments. But with today's game is it fair to start bitching? I think it’s still too early, as for the most part we have seen a lot of improvement thus far this year and this was just one game. So I ask the board, at what point in time of a new coach's tenure is it fair to start bitching....Do we need to wait four years....an entire recruiting cycle? I like RR and think he will succeed at Michigan, and he definitely deserves the fan support, especially with the free-press lynch mob after him. That being said, he is the coach and ultimately responsible for the program. So I ask…What should the expectations on the team be right now, so that we can fairly judge RR’s performance. Go Blue.

I am extremely concerned with the defense going forward. And special teams. I mean, next year we lose Grahm, Zoltan and probably Warren. Those are straight-up our 3 best players. We do not have much in the pipeline, either. Can anyone give me ANY good news about the defense next year aside from "they will all be a year older"?

qed

October 24th, 2009 at 8:42 PM ^

We recruited the best punter in the country. Turner is a 5-star talent like warren and we have the inside track on christian and have some other young corners in the pipeline. Graham--well Roh won't be as good but the middle of our line will be stouter and more mature next year. We have a couple other decent young ends being recruited or as redshits. Hopefully that helps a little.

roh MIGHT be as good as warren. he's...what?...less than three months into his career, counting fall camp? and still making plays? i'm not saying he WILL be as good as graham, but i don't think we can absolutely say he won't...

1) No, Tate actually enjoys the cold. I think he needs to learn to start wearing gloves though. He was definitely cold, you could tell pre-snap. I don't understand why so few guys were wearing UnderArmour-esque gear. 2) Warren was actually by far my biggest disappointment today. I felt like the rest of the defense did a decent job, but he didn't. Three of their touchdowns were on him just plain not trying. I don't know what his problem is, but he cost us the game. 3) No. You have to remember that Royster is probably the best back in the Big Ten, even though he is unsung in a lot of circles. He gets 5 yards on EVERYBODY. 4) In a way, yes. He should be a wildcat QB if anything. His package is too slim, and especially on rainy days he should not be throwing. 5) No. It might even help. RR's system will work if we get better people, it's obvious in that all of the drops were good reads that were poorly handled. 6) Don't even start. I didn't set any expectations besides a bowl this year. You shouldn't have either. RR is smart enough to know that this isn't his year. It might even be better to let some of the other big names in the Big Ten beat up on us a little bit, so that the conference can compete nationally. Next year is where we will start seeing mass improvements, and the year after we can contend for the BCS.
