Wallpaper Season - The Genius of Jim

Submitted by jonvalk on

Ok, so this was more an exercise in creating a magazine spread than me designing a wallpaper, but it occurred to me that many of you are just as crazy obsessed with Harbaugh's presence at Michigan and may enjoy it.  This was a concept piece I did this week for a fictional magazine article about Jim.  I did it because I'm working on building up a portfolio of various graphic design templates in order to possibly land some freelance stuff.  I hope you all enjoy it.  It has been sized to fit a standard HD 16:9 screen because that's what I run.  As always, constructive criticism and suggestions are welcome.

as presented, If it's a book cover  with the title on the back cover. Jim's photo would be FC and "The Genius of Jim" would be BC.

In order to create a usable FC, you'd need to move the title above the photo and include author bio or teaser stuff to the left. That way when you create the fold, the title and photo are both FC.

Well, like I said in the info, it's supposed to be a magazine spread. So, like, if you opened up a copy of ESPN the Magazine or HTTV, you would have this be the "spread" covering both pages. When I said "that's the idea to the poster below, I meant that it's supposed to look like print media instead of a wallpaper. Thanks for looking out, though, and perhaps I'll make a variation that IS meant for a book cover. That would give me another piece to put in a portfolio.

It is very well done and would make a great center spread. Maybe Brian and Crew would be up for you creating an annual center spread for HTTV: something unique and aesthetic that defines he upcoming season.

I really like the layers to the spread. There is lined paper, graphing paper (or is that drawing paper?), the picture of Jim, multiple plays, and the photo of the gears in his head. It looks very professional to me.

It's actually two separate versions of graphing paper, with one warped perspective-wise to create a flat plane coming out of the image. I'm still not in love with the gears, but I can easily swap that out as it's only a layer mask on an image of gears that has been perspective-warped. Thanks for looking for all of that detail. I like to put little finishing touches on the pieces I do. For instance, I took as much of the red out of the coloring as I could. Just an homage to our disdain for the color and the school that features it prominently. Anyway, thanks for the kind words.
