Video Diary: UM Football Hype Video 2K11

Submitted by Hoke Saves Lives on

While not technically a diary, in the sense most diaries on the site are anyway, I’m giving thought to starting a “video diary” of sorts, with fun mash-up projects and such, over the course of the season.  I’ll prepare the video and give explanations of what I was thinking when I put it together.  I’m not sure what I’m going to do or use, but I’m sure I’ll come up with something.  If you have any suggestions, or ideas, feel free to post them in the comments.  Now, without further ado … onto the entry:

After all the positive feedback from the “Ohio State Inception” Mashup, I felt that I needed to do something bigger for my next video.  This logically led to one conclusion – a hype video.

Now, my opinion of what a hype video should be may differ slightly from others, particularly the “Better Son, Better Daughter” videos (which I LOVED, don’t get me wrong), but I think a hype video should be so incredibly grand and awe-inspiring that you have nothing but goosebumps at the end.  In that vein, I was watching a particularly grand and epic blockbuster the other day, and I heard a speech that has from the time I heard it, been a particular favorite of mine … and it all just clicked together.

I won’t spoil it for you, and I’ll stop boring you with words and just say …

… here’s my submission for a Michigan Football Hype Video 2011.

For App Users:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YzHGdhdKxVk

Initially, just FYI - I wouldn’t expect this kind of quick turn-around from me between videos in the future.  I’ve been home-sick with the flu all week, and this was an outlet for my boredom.  All in-all, this took about 20+ hours to put together, though at least 6-7 of that was downloading videos.

Also, as I’m all for giving credit where credit is due, many thanks to Brian, shortsgoblue, and all those who’ve contributed to the original hype videos that came before this one.  They certainly served as the genesis for my own contribution and mine certainly wouldn’t have come about without them.  Additionally, kudos to everyone on YouTube who has so meticulously catalogued Michigan football highlights, specifically WolverinesHistorian and parkinggod, as well as all of those people who put together hype videos of their own, as clips were borrowed from a great many sources.  The nature of such a project as this is collaborative by default, given the limited material we all have to work with, so I do appreciate the efforts of others on their own videos.

The speech, if you didn't know, is from "Armageddon" by none-other-than Mr. Michael Bay. It's the speech the president gives before the astronauts blast off to go fight the asteroid.  The clip can be seen here:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j_sUlupV48I

Now, a word about the music, as this is always the key subject matter for discussion aside from the actual video itself.  As I said above, I wanted grandeur and spectacle for my hype video, hence the “over-the-top” anthem I chose from 30 Seconds to Mars.  I love the grandiose-nature of their music (having used it for my “Movies in Action 2011” Mashup I posted a month or so ago), and I felt that it fit very well with the video I was trying to make.  Also, if you’ll go and read the lyrics (http://www.lyricskid.com/lyrics/30-seconds-to-mars-lyrics/vox-populi-lyrics.html) I think you’ll find they fit this season better than you’d think.

I tried to make a video equivalent to what I think this season represents – namely reclamation of things we’ve forgotten these past few years and an attempt to recapture an old identity.  This is why there are so many references to the past tied into the video itself.  I wasn’t a RichRod basher or anything like that, and I’m all for more creative offenses, but there’s something inexplicably comforting about a return to past glory and having someone in place who we all know respects that past as if it was his own blood.  That’s why this video had to be so epic, because I just can’t escape that feeling that something epic is just around the corner.

Until then … hopefully this video keeps a sense of “epic” alive over the summer months, a summer when recruiting has abnormally slowed to a crawl, and we’re all on the edge of our seats counting down the days until the season kicks off.  Hope everyone enjoyed the video.

Cheers.

EDIT:  Also, just FYI, a poster below made this point and I wanted to make sure I wasn't making myself "look to good" by taking credit for someone's work, but the "over laid" visual effects, like Denard's running highlights on a stadium wall, old fans in a new stadium, and the old players over the new block M, those were all from an ESPN special and an award winning student-produced film on Michigan football called "Michigan Stadium - A Timeless Tradition" respectively that were used in another 2011 hype video.  I didn't do those myself, unfortunately.

"Tremendous Effort.  Tremendous Intensity.  Way to be fanatical."

If thats what you do while sick, I'd like to see some of your work when healthy.  Fantastic job.  And take the (constructive) critics for what its worth - you'll never please everybody.

Is this gonna get a BUMP to front page?

The banner scenes...the downfield blocking shots...Shoelace outrunning everyone on the field!  It's all great stuff.

Will I be able to grab this on Youtube in the future?  How long will it be there?  Years?  Thank You in advance.

Ok, I watched this with my 2 year old son, who was shouting GO BOO! (blue). Yes, I am choking up a bit.

Thank you for a moment I'll remember forever.

I'm going to play devil's advocate, which is dumb for talking about a hype vid, but WHATEVA.

As much as I love Armageddon (not kidding), I just couldn't ignore how stupid it seemed when we heard "Mommy, that salesman's on TV" intertwined with football clips.  Just took me completely out of the moment...

That said, the Woodson pick was perfectly synched.  I guess I would just say it seems tired to do hype videos with audio/speeches/monologues that have little to do with football.

Plus, those Big House clips that were taken from the award winning short about Michigan Football are going to be stolen uncredited so many times in the upcoming months... I just feel like those UM students are kinda getting the shaft with so many people stealing their hard work.  I'm ok with you stealing Michael Bay's work though :)

And I just hate comparing sports to war.  I'm not really upset by the comparison, but it can be insulting to some of the people actually going to war and if they're upset by it, I'm upset by it.

... aside, as it's your opinion and you're certainly entitled to it, but if you could give me a link to that video produced by the students, or a link to an article about it, I'd be happy to update the post and my YouTube description to make sure I give them proper credit.  I tried to google it but didn't have much luck, as I wasn't really sure what I was looking for.  The clips were so well done I thought they were part of the ESPN video.

... and I thought the exact same thing about the little girl's voice in the background, believe me, as a meticulously detailed editor, it grated on me.  In the end though, I just had to make due given how much I loved the overall combinations of the video and speech.  If I had better audio editing software, I could've broken down the track into it's individual voice channels, but if I had that kind of money to spend on software I'd be in another line of professional work, lol.

Thanks for the honest feedback, it's duly noted.

I YouTube'd "michigan football tradition" and it was the third link ;)  FYI: This was showed in stadium at the season opener last year.

Seriously, very nice job.  I hope I  didn't sound like a dick.  Was just trying to throw out some opposing points to go with the very much deserved kudos.

... I didn't take it as you being a dick at all.  If people never offered any constructive criticism, everyone would think their work is as perfect as it can be.  I just wanted to make sure that all the correct people got credit for the film work that I used in the video.  Thanks for finding that clip.  Those shots were too good to go uncredited.

Definitely a great start to the hype video season and yours comes oh so close to 2009, but I still gotta go with Tim and Brian's brilliant collaboration:

... positive comments and feedback from everyone, I'm greatly appreciative.  I'm glad to see that this hit the right spots with people (for the most part) and gets everyone appropriately amped up for the football season.  Thanks for watching.

That really was brilliant and I loved it.  Excellent job.

I'm awful at making hype videos.  (Plus, I don't know what YouTube's stance is on copyright music.) That's why I stick to highlights.  But I'm really impressed with all these hype vids.

... again for all that great old footage you put together.  It really made finding all those clips easy and it was in solid quality.

YouTube's copyright policy is ever-evolving and now most things are "fair use" provided you're not trying to profit off of it, and are making the work transformative as opposed to directly ripping off someone's work without credit.  YouTube has adopted a "copyright holder action" policy instead of a "YouTube action" policy, meaning that YouTube won't take things down unless the copyright holder has specifically said you can't use their material.  After every upload, during the "processing" phase, YouTube is scanning your video for tagged material that has a digitally embedded tag.  If it's already flagged, they let you know and your video is blocked.  If the song/video copyright holder has allowed for YouTube use, provided ads are shown in the video, they let you know and flag your video accordingly.  You can still post it, and use the song that you got from say iTunes, but you'll get the occassional ad.

Hope that helps.

Here are some articles about it:

Thanks for the info.  That clears some things up.  Last year, I included the intro to the 1991 Notre Dame game which has Michael Jackson's "Bad" playing in the background and Brent Musberger previewing the game over it.  That got me the music advertisement for that vid.

However, I uploaded the 1986 Ohio State game 2 weeks ago with the intro that has the Rocky theme playing in the background and I got the notice that it matched a 3rd party content.  All it says is that this video won't be available to some folks in other countries but it doesn't say who exactly.  And apparently the only way you can watch it now is if you click on my channel.  If you type "1986 Michigan/Ohio State" into the YouTube search engine, my video doesn't show up.

This copyright issue with YouTube still confuses the hell out of me sometimes.

I also wanted to say something else.

I wasn't going to mention this, however, it has bothered me all day.

I am a combat infantry vet. I am not offended by the references to war. I don't know of anyone who has actually been in combat who is shallow enough to be unable to accept the obvious parallels we all grew up with between sports and war.

Please don't let fear of offending someone on such a basis be a deterrent to future creativity.

I don't know if someone said this above or not, but as someone who has a brother in the armed forces I have a hard time accepting anything, and think it is horribly cliche, to compare any sort of athletic competition to war. This isn't to knock your talents, which you clearly have, I just don't think comparing football to war works. I understand the parallels that were drawn by coaches and the media as we all grew up, but they seem like apples to oranges, IMHE.
