Ugly Game of the Week (Week 8 Edition)

Submitted by stubob on
Last week went so well I figure I'll give it another go this week.  Since it's too easy to pick on, say, Northern Illinois v Miami (NTM), I'll try to stay with major conferences.

As always, the "Least Good/Best Bad" game of the week, aka the Pam and Ray Show, is Illinois (1-5, 0-4 Big Ten) v Purdue (2-5, 1-2 Big Ten).  That game is ESPN2, but Northwestern v Indiana is on BTN?  Key matchup:  Pam Ward drinking game versus sharp objects.  Although credit to Illinois for pulling a fast one and not really benching Juice last week.  This week, they will have a redshirt freshman's name to pull out of the hat as well.

Colorado (2-4, 1-1 Big 12) v Kansas State (4-3, 2-1 Big 12).  Even though CU pulled out a win against Kansas last week, Kansas lost two fumbles and threw a pick as well.  Kansas scored on their last 5 drives, and it only proved that Kansas's defense was worse than CU's offense.  Add to that a KState team who has played no one and lost to some of them.  After squeaking out wins against powerhouses Massachusetts and Iowa State, they got pounded by Texas Tech.  Key matchup:  Tyler Hansen versus himself.

As much as I'd like to pick Maryland v Duke for Game 3, I'll go with Washington State v Cal.  Washington State's win (singular) is against SMU, by 3, so yeah.  Cal has been "offensively challeged" against Oregon and USC, scoring 3 points in each game, until exploding against UCLA for 26 in a loss.  In the same way as vinegar and baking soda explodes.  Key matchup:  Cal versus Evil Cal.  Also, Washington State versus QB roulette wheel.  They seem to be platooning 3 or possibly 4 QBs.  Fortunately, no one seems to be showing this game, and with the spread at 36, that seems like a good idea.

0-6 EMU vs 0-7 Ball State easily takes the cake. I know it's not a major conference, but come on. These are two of the worst 5-10 teams in the country. It's the battle of the sucks.

I really have to go with MD vs Duke. Both teams are just flat out horrible.

I will start with Duke. Three wins coming against Army, North Carolina Central and a somewhat impressive victory over North Carolina State. Three losses coming against Richmond (really), Kansas, and VT (both of which could be expected). The offense is ranked 45th, which is a surprise and the passing game is a really surprising 7th. However, the rushing offense is ranked 114th with only 83 YPG which explains why the passing game is so high.

Now the horrendous Maryland Terps. Two wins coming against Clemson and James Madison (did not know they had a team) and five losses coming against Cal, MTS, Rutgers, Virginia, and Wake. 89th totals offense, 37th passing offense, and 106th rushing offense.

The weather is suppose to be rain, so this one could really be hard to watch if both teams are forced to run the ball. My take is Duke is a bad average team and Maryland is just a really really bad team, Duke will probably win this game just because they are the better bad.

"Who cares?" The game with the least amount of fans and betting interests: Western Kentucky vs Middle Tennessee St. Combined fan base = 3.

"Aesthetic Anesthesia" for ugliest unis: UAB @Marshall. Looks like a dragon ate kelp and barfed it all over the football field.

"Detroit Lions - Cleveland Browns" for total inept play: Ball State @EMU. as Weasel said "at least someone has to get a win".

I'm still hoping for a Syracuse v. Illinois Roady's Humanitarian bowl match up on the smurf turf of Boise. Decidedly NOT "humanitarian" - It would be enough to turn a normal high functioning brain into an epileptic catastrophe. Results would be akin to the "Brown Noise" episode of South Park, except people would be literally sh!tting their brains out.
