Ugly Game of the Week - Week 4 Edition

Week 3 Recap

I feel bad about picking on Wyoming after hearing that they lost some players in a car accident.  A moratorium on Wyoming for the rest of the season.  Boise State still scored 52, such is life in college football.  Virginia Tech escaped a lynching after coming from behind 27-21 to win 49-27.  ECU went 4-14 on 3rd down, then 3-3 on 4th?  Figure that one out, unless they were using the "Never Punt" strategy.  Washington State lost to SMU 35-21in a game that featured 13 punts for just under 600 yards.  That's some darn fine puntin'.

This week

Two 0-3 teams face off in the "1988 Baltimore Orioles Memorial" game.  New Mexico and UNLV begin the battle for the MWC basement.  New Mexico has gotten pummeled by good competition like Oregon, Texas Tech and UtahUNLV has played reasonably well against Wisconsin, Utah, and Idaho.  Both teams are 100+ in scoring and defense.  Is the MWC the MAC of the west?  Also, UNLV's logo looks like a pair of testicles if you look at it long enough.  Seriously.

Speaking of New Mexico, New Mexico State goes up against KansasNMS already has a loss to SDSU, and we all know the story of Kansas so far.  This is the "Jekyll and Hyde" game of the week, depending on which Jayhawk team shows up.  New Mexico also gets a special "There's A New Mexico Now?" award for overall statewide incompetence.

The "Food Network's Cupcake Wars" game this week is tOSU versus Eastern MichiganEastern is already 0-2 in conference, and started off the season with a loss to Army.  Plus they're giving up 37 PPG, while tOSU is only giving up 12.  This one may be over at the coin-toss.  Special thanks to ABC for putting this up as a regional game again.

Speaking as an Eastern alumnus, I must protest your calling the EMU-OSU game...err, slaughter the Cupcake Game of the Week.  To call it a cupcake game is an understatement, OSU should roll through Eastern with little trouble as Eastern has very little defense and the offense looked pretty shaky against Central (although it wasn't bad against Army).   Maybe Swoop will be inspired by the Bobcat.  And why would ABC put this up for a regional game?  Oh well.  The sad part is that I was tempted to head down to this game until I found out I'd have to give OSU like 80 bucks.  Heck that's more than I paid for the UMass game.

"Bobcat" yesterday, here in Cbus.  He told them that Brutus has since become his friend on facebook, and that this version of Brutus is a guy (in the past it has been a female), and he is on the wrestling team.

My guess (after watching "bobcat" kick his butt), it that Brutus is an alternate.

Bad Art game of the week drawn by MOBA - UAB @Tennessee.  Trogdar the hunted!

Dunning–Kruger game of the week run by the US Governement  - NMex @UNLV.  With the Lobos, Aggies, Rebels and Rams battling for the basement of the MWC,  most of these games will be in the Mountian Time Zone.

Cupcake Bowl baked by the Little Sisters of the Poor - EMU @OSU is sporting a hefty 43-point spread.  With Sweatervest playing a rare non-Ohio based patsy I expec the spread to be covered by half.

I don't think it will be anything like that.  If the score is like 21-0 at the end of the first quarter, I would expect the Vest to pull out Pryer and company.  If it is like 42-0 at the end of the half, I expect the second string to go out.  In the second half, I expect the third string to get lots of playing time and the score to be around 40-0 (or maybe 42-7 because of a gimme touchdown).  I don't think the Vest is one to pour it on.

last year OSU kicked an onside kick and had Posey throw a TD pass (he's the WR in case you aren't aware) in the game even though everyone knew NMSU had ZERO chance of even making the game close. OSU was a 44 pt favorite at kickoff and won the game 45-0; coincidence...I think not.

Tressel is usually VERY aware of the spread in OSU's games against cupcakes and does everything in his power to make sure OSU covers, if at all possible.

If OSU is a 43 pt favorite at kickoff, I expect OSU to win by 44 points.

...former EMU Huron linebacker who played in the dark days of the early '80s, I have great sympathy for the Eagles. I sincerely hope they can somehow achieve MAC competitiveness.

I vividly remember waiting with my parents for my brother to emerge from the locker room after every loss.  Misery every time.  And all you can do is say you did a great job and what is with those receivers who blow by the DBs but can't catch the damn ball?

First time I ever say fireworks after a game was when EMU lost to I-AA Youngstown State (defending Natl Champs, I believe) at YSU.  Damn that pissed me off.  I still don't like fireworks after a game, even if it's my team that's shoothing them off.

I do have a little remorse for doing this column.  I try to pick on different teams so I don't single anyone out too often.  I know all the teams are out there trying to win, but sometimes it just doesn't work out.  I've been trying to pick other criteria for "ugliness," but picking visually ugly teams would end up with VT, Boise State, Oregon, and anyone playing in a throw-back uniform.
