Ugly Game of the Week - Week 3 Edition

Week 2 Recap

Officially, Michigan State and FAU had 36,000 people at the game.  Half of them must have been in the bathroom whenever the cameras showed the crowd, though.  Eastern Michigan dropped a close one to Miami(NTM) 21-28, and so, like groundhog day, Toledo stays in Ohio for another year.  Wisconsin did well against SJSU, but Tolzien was 15-22 passing, which must have hurt their numbers.  The Cupcake award therefore posthumously goes to Maryland (!) for putting up 62 on Morgan State.  And last but not least, Louisvile scored all 23 points in the second quarter to beat East Kentucky by 10.

Week 3 Preview

The "Torch and Pitchfork" Game of the Week is Virginia Tech versus East Carolina.  VT needs a win, and ECU has scored 100 points in their first two games.  Get ready for more schadenfreude from the Hokies.

The "Think of the Children" game this week is Boise State versus Wyoming.  Boise needs to destroy everyone in their path, thanks to Virginia Tech, and Wyoming is coming off a 34-7 loss to Texas last week.  I expect Boise State to score just under 100.

As I refuse to taunt the gods of I-AA, I won't put Michigan versus UMass in, and instead give Washington State versus SMU the "One Legged Man Ass-Kicking" award.  WSU sqeaked out a win against Montana State, while SMU beat UAB 28-7.  Plus, WSU has USC next week to look forward to, which is nice.

They're an interesting case.  I wonder if they crap the bed and spiral into a terrible season, or if they rebound and pull a Michigan 2007 - post-Horror.  There are major differences, of course.  We did have 0-2 ND coming to town (who they beat 38-0!), but there are parallels...

You neglected to include UConn's 62-3 victory in week 2. They were just trying to get over their post-Denard hangover. If it plays out like that, ND will leave East Lansing with a W and Dantonio will look even more angry. Could lead to fires and beatings.

Maybe if VT notches another loss this weekend there will be a new "coach on the hot seat". We need that to take some of the heat off of RR.

Minnesota has looked bad against MTSU and SD, but then USC has also looked unimpressive against Hawaii and UVA (!).  They were outgained in both games and racked up 24 penalties for 240 yards in 2 weeks.  UVA would have won, were it not for 2 missed FGs.  At worst, they would have tied, since USC also missed a FG.

USC has some talented players - no question about that.  But the "discipline" issues, as Kiffin calls is, goes straight to - wait for it - COACHING.  With Lane at the helm, I think anyone has a realistic chance of winning.  Their phsyical advantage can only take them so far if their coach is no good.

I looked at the game and couldn't figure out what to make of it.  Plus I already picked on Minnesota in week one, so I cut them some slack.  They seem to have some sort of offense, so I don't think it will be too lopsided.

The Blind in 1.5 Eyes Aesthetic Fail Bowl sponsored by Pearl Vision:  Iowa State versus Kansas State.  I don't think this one needs too much explaining.

Think of the Children (aka Redheaded Stepchild) Beatdown Bowl sponsored by the LAPD:  There are some banjackings forthcoming.  Ohio visiting the toilet, er, Shoe and USC visiting Minnesota, who just lost to South Dakota can be lumped in with the Bronco beatdown.

2,000 Flushes Blue Patsy Bowl:  Middle Tennesse @Memphis.  These teams aren't very good.  MTSU lost to Minnesota at home (who, as mentioned, lost to SOUTH DAKOTA) and Memphis has given up 98 points to Mississippi State (who usually scores about 50pts a season) and East Carolina.  Honorable mention goes to North Texas @Army.

I was impressed by South Carolina (especially Lattimore).  I looked up Furman's stats and they allowed 206 rushing yards against Colgate, just saying if Colgate can put up 206 how many yards can Lattimore put up.

Sorry Tate.
