TVH Weekly: Dallas Crawford, Chris Wormley, Kevin Sousa

Submitted by TomVH on

This weekly update is brought to you late by CMU's homecoming. Here's a look at a few recruits that I caught up with after the Iowa visit weekend. I'll pass along more info as I start to catch up.

Dallas CrawfordDallas Crawford

5'10", 185 lbs.

Cornerback

Fort Myers, Florida

Dallas has dreadlocks, so he's ok by me. He's also very interested in Michigan, so much so that this past visit vaulted the Wolverines into the top spot. I was under the assumption that Michigan had been leading anyway, but this visit may have pushed it over the top for him. Every time he comes up to Ann Arbor he seems to be more and more comfortable with the surroundings and coaches.

Crawford was on the trip with highly touted teammate WR Sammy Watkins. Watkins has always listed Miami as one of his top schools, and often throws in Michigan and Clemson. There seems to be some problems up at Miami now, rumors that freshman safety Latwan Anderson is going to transfer along with what maybe two or three more young players. Miami also recently lost 2011 commit WR Eli Rogers, and while this isn't confirmed I've heard that they have some work to do to keep 2011 QB commit Teddy Bridgewater.

Just something to keep an eye on. If Miami continues to play poorly and starts to lose players and commitments, it may help Michigan's case. It also helps that his teammate is in his ear about joining him. They will both be back up for official visits around December. I'm more and more optimistic about Watkins as the time passes. Two unofficial visits to Michigan signal major interest.

Christopher WormleyChris Wormley

6'4", 255 lbs.

Defensive End

Toledo, Ohio

Wormley is an important piece to the 2012 class on the defensive side of the ball. Michigan fans have been anxious about defensive recruiting, but the 2012 class could restock Michigan's depth chart in a big way. Early on I had reported that Ohio State was in the lead because of the attention he was getting from them, but that may have changed.

The game was good, besides the loss. Michigan has been moving up, they're up there right now. They just offered me too.

He likes to keep things close to the vest, but the word on the street now is that Michigan is the team to beat, and it may be pretty hard to beat them. [Ed.: The generally plugged Buckeye Planet mods are saying it's likely M, FWIW.]

Michigan has offered Wormley, as he said, which is a step in the right direction. He said that it feels good to have the offer, but he's probably not going to be making any decisions any time soon. Wormley will be one of the best players out of Ohio, and should be in the 4-5 star range when the rankings come out for 2012.

Kevin SousaKevin Sousa

6'2", 213 lbs.

Quarterback

Lake Nona, Florida

Michigan's quarterback commit was in Ann Arbor for his first game, and really enjoyed seeing the atmosphere. Sousa has only been playing football for a few years, so hasn't been too sure how he stacks up, or how well he's prepared for the next level. His coach told me that meeting Michigan's quarterbacks gave him a better glimpse of his potential:

The game experience was great, and Kevin enjoyed the excitement and everything. Sousa finally realized how gifted he is physically after meeting each quarterback and seeing their performance in the weight room. I just hope they show him the interest they should because he's a steal.

I've mentioned the last bit before, but it seems like there may be a lack of communication going on. I'm not going to speculate on the reasoning behind that, for obvious reasons. We'll see how it plays out.

Extra:

  • It looks like the Illinois game will now be the date for the big Dr. Phillips visit. So far commit Demetrius Hart, S Roderick Ryles, WR Chris Gallon, and QB Nick Patti are scheduled to be there. If Ha'Sean Clinton-Dix shows up, then his recruitment might get interesting.
  • DT Kevin McReynolds (6'2", 280 lbs, 4 Star) is now interested in Michigan. He spoke with the coaches last week, and said he would like to make it up for a visit. Here's his junior film, and a video of how he currently trains. Michigan coaches will be at his school on Friday, so it sounds like they're turning up the heat on Kevin.
  • [Ed.: A newspaper article indicates CB Greg Brown was scheduled to be at Syracuse this weekend. That might be an indication the two parties are looking to go separate ways.]

Tom,

If Ha Ha were to join the rest of the gang on the visit it would be as an "unofficial" wouldn't it? I thought he was already up earlier this season and used that as his "official" visit.

More importantly, I think, is whether or not that would mean we are more in on his recruitment than anyone believes right now.  Would him coming up again mean that we actually have a shot?  Or that he is simply coming up to hang out with his friends and is still a firm commit to 'Bama?

Thanks guys.  I was thinking that nothing is formal until the LOI is signed.  Just thought maybe it was poor form if he already committed and he didn't doing anything off field, but I guess things happen.  I am probably speculating too much until we hear more from Tom.

I read the recruiting posts religiously but I appear to be clueless about the "attitude" towards Sousa?  Is Michigan cooling off now that Marquise is looking at them again?  If so, that is really uncool.  If only because you've got a kid that received an offer and jumped at it.  Doesn't Michigan want these kinds of kids playing for them?  Also, with Denard/Tate having 2 years left and Devin 3, a QB in this class would arguably only have one year of starting if all pans out with Devin.  It just doesn't seem worth the negativity to cool off on a kid that is in love with Michigan and physically capable of playing for them.  All that said, I seem to have missed something here and reserve the right to withdraw my thoughts once I know all the facts.

A QB in this class would likely RS so he could start for 2 years. That said, I like the gamble here of going for Marquise. We might lose Sousa in the process, but we might get a better recruit too. We have 3 guys who will be here a while, we can afford to be aggressive. Worst case scenario? We get neither, and the top dual threat QB in the next class jumps at us knowing he'll have a chance to start for 3 years.

I forgot about the redshirt option (duh) and I guess you're right about positioning themselves to get an arguably better player.  That said, it still just doesn't sit right with me.  It's messing with a teenager's mind, him thinking for months that he's done with the recruiting process and is going to play somewhere he's always wanted, only to find out none of that is true.  But maybe that's just the cost of doing business these days?

I don't like it either. But with as much committing/ decommitting the kids do, I think all is fair.

I think kids/coaches have to understand the rules of the game - especially with the attrocious showing he is having this year (I know not much of it is his fault). Especially when trying to get a full scholly to a place like Michigan, they have to expect some of this.

That said, I do with everyone was just forthright about everything. "Listen kid, we like you and are still looking at you. However..."

"we have a chance at a more polished QB; we will honor your schollie but you may end up playing defense.  If you'd rather play QB I could make some calls for you.  My friend Butch in Cincinnati would be happy to have you."

Slow playing Sousa = Marquise Williams leaning toward Michigan??? Also Wormley is probably top priority in 2012, I predict a tremendous haul of defenders next year. James Ross, Danny O'Brien, and Cass Tech duo RJS and Terrry Richardson, all of these players SHOULD be in the high 3 to 4* range with Wormley possibly a 5*

As always, cant wait to see your update.  Not sure what to think about the Sousa deal but love the recent interest from K Mac.  Kid could be a stud and cant wait to see what having a year under barwis will do for him.

Since I started following the U, due to my current flame, the past two years have been nothing but a complete flop for the mighty U. Randy Shannon has lost the confidence of almost all the former players and his current crop of players plus the fan base is disappearing at an alarming rate. I attended the FSU game this year and what a complete mess....there is no fire on that team AT ALL!! There was no one like Tater jumping around trying to get the crowd into the game...no emotion....they are just going through the motions. Randy just sulks on the sideline, arms crossed not talking to anyone. When Jacory comes off the field he goes to the end of the bench and sits....no talking with recievers NO COACHING AT ALL!! I kinda feel for the kid since he was recruited to bring back the U. Numerous Miami fans came up to me and commented on my Michigan hat n shirt saying " Miami should have gotten DRob...what were we thinking?" In my humble opinion when you alienate your past players who have brought so much honor to a university, destroy a loyal fan base, and ignore your better players because they are "just freshmen" you wont be around for much longer. Lets hope we can use the Us demise to get a few of their disgruntled players...its certainly can't hurt.

If Randy Shannon gets fired I bet the U will take a shot at coach rod. This staff already recruits florida well and I think Denard, Dee Hart, and other players wouldn't think twice about following him to the U.. I think coach would be happier at a place like Miami.. He wouldn't have to put up with the crap he does here at Michigan.  He would have a better defense in place and his Offense would be able to adapt faster at Miami in his first year. Miami wouldnt be a tropical depression it would be the U again.. I think he would think very hard about this if this opportunity came available. I know this fan base would be happy then you can go get your MICHIGAN MAN!!!!!

is publicly saying the U needs more thugs back (http://slumz.boxden.com/f16/michael-irvin-miami-needs-1-2-more-thugs-team-who-dont-care-about-anything-but-winnin-1431828/), it ain't roses and unicorns for Coach Shannon. The blowout losses to tOSU and FlaSt have a lot of alums questioning if Shannon is the right guy. I'd say where there's smoke there's fire, but in Michael Irvin's case, that may just be the regular environment...

Is it a coincidence that Kevin McReynolds training video uses the same track as the 2010 hype video ?? It could be a sing from God. Please God, let that be a sign.

Just saw some quotes from his visit:

He enjoyed the visit. Said the crowd created a great atmosphere, way bigger than Clemson or Florida. He says we run a lot but he made note of how balanced we are, hitting the outside receivers often (that's where he says he would play; "so i'll be getting the ball a lot if I go there"). Already knows Denard and hung out with him after the game. He sat behind Sousa and they get along. He likes the Michigan QBs, including the one coming in his year (Sousa). He is high on playing right away, we offer that opportunity.

Really enjoyed being up in AA with Dallas and meeting all the coaches. Likes Coach Dews b/c he's honest and to the point and they connected. He says Michigan, Clemson and Miami are all tied up...which means we moved up! Hooray.

"I know I am taking an official visit back up to Michigan probably in December or January."
