"Rodrick Williams Jr.'s 10-month old, 2-foot-long savannah monitor named "Kill" gets the RB some strange looks when they go for walks together."
The Michigan coaches have gone after some of the top quarterbacks in the 2012 class including Zeke Pike, Gunner Kiel, and Maty Mauk. Without landing any of their targets yet it has still given hope to a few prospects without an offer from the Wolverines. Trotwood Madison quarterback Mike Simpson (6'2", 208 lbs) showed up to Michigan's camp with intent to impress the coaching staff and the desire to earn an offer.
This wasn't his first time at a Michigan camp, but with the new coaching staff it was like a brand new experience. "I talked to Coach Hoke while I was there and I saw they were doing a lot more under center stuff," he said. "I went to camp when Coach Rich [Rodriguez] was there and everything was shotgun. This was more balanced, and I like that because I think that fits me."
Simpson believes that he can run if necessary, but considers himself a passer first who can make something happen with his legs. "I've only ran for three touchdowns in high school, and I started since my sophomore year," said Simpson. "We ran a spread but we didn't run a lot. I throw the ball a lot, and when we're under center I was looking to pass. You can call me a dual threat quarterback, but I consider myself more dropback."
As for his camp performance he believes he left an impression on the coaches and showed them what he can do. "Coach Smith asked the QB coach how I did and he said really well. Coach Smith told me to call him and talk about everything," Simpson said. No offer has been extended, but Simpson is eager to hear more from the coaching staff. "I'm hoping that they offer. I know that they liked Zeke Pike and then he went to Auburn," he said. "They don't have any other commits, and I know they have a commit from the 2013 class [Shane Morris] but not any in our class."
Mike currently holds offers from Northern Illinois and a couple other smaller schools, but has started to garner more attention as of late. "I heard from Kentucky early on and still do, all the MAC schools really like me, I've also been hearing from Illinois and Boston College lately, too," he said.
Simpson's interest in Michigan is high and part of that comes from one of his best friends. "Kaleb [Ringer] went up to camp with me. He didn't do anything, but he rode up with me," he said. "We play for different schools, I went to Chaminade and then transferred to Trotwood, but we've just known each other for awhile now."
Having that familiar face and friend committed to Michigan has given him a level of comfortability with the Wolverines. Simpson says that he would rather not wait everything out and if Michigan were to come calling it might be difficult to pass up. "If they offered I would talk about it with my family and everyone and look into it," he said. "But with Kaleb [Ringer] going there and me fitting in that system it would be pretty hard for me to say no."
To me (with no scouting experience and being a homer for Dayton-area kids), the highlights show a guy with good mobility and poise under pressure who can put some zip on the ball. I wonder if he's really 6'2" given his relative lack of offers.
I'm just saying that he looks good to me (a non-expert) in his highlights and I wonder why he doesn't have more offers.
Many people have said this, but we can't assume that Morris is gonna be a five star. He has two years of high school left. I think he's gonna be very good, but there were other people in this position (someone refresh me with the names.. I can't think of them)
Both looked like early five-stars who turned out to be 3 or 4-star guys.
Simpson is an interesting prospect. While it would be great to sign another top quarterback, the coaches may be concerned about depth in case we suffer a series of injuries at the QB spot. So they may be looking at Simpson as a guy who can develop. Shane Morris isn't coming for two years. A lot can happen. Guys get hurt, leave. There is wisdom in signing a QB in each class. But we can be sure the coaches will not offer Simpson unless they are sure he's a Big Ten quarterback.
This kid went to my former high school and then transferred. I am very close to the program there and I can tell you UM doesn't want to touch this kid with a 10 foot poll. First he is a terrified mess in the pocket. He has terrible touch on his passes. And to make matters worse got in more then one fight with teammates. He is now playing for Trotwood who was recruiting him the whole time he was at another high school, which is whole other story. And then you have his grandpa and mom, big believers in the fact their kid or grandkid, could never do wrong.
I really hope UM is on bigger, better, and less of head case targets then this kid.
I dont know him personally, but what doesyour statement about him being recruited by another school have to do with anything. It happens all the time.
Throws a nice fade, too. Seems to get the ball off well under pressure. He's excited about Michigan, which is nice.
I have a question, though, what's going on at 3:30 where he becomes left handed for 2 plays?
lol, nice catch, didn't notice that. Maybe it's a different QB.
I'm not expecting him to get an offer any time soon, maybe later on. I don't mean that as a knock on him, I just don't think it will happen until closer to signing day if they don't think they're in it with anyone higher on their board. Don't take this post as me implying anything just thought I would give him a chance to say what's going on and that he's hoping to hear from Michigan.
Do you think there's a chance that we offer him a greyshirt like we did with Clark?
No, that wouldn't make any sense. Morris is already the QB for the '13 class.
But personally i'd rather have 2 WR or 2 DT instead of a qb
Also, rather than starting a new thread I'll just post this here. I deleted a thread I started last night about Kyle Kalis because I don't have a paywall to write behind. Everyone can see what I write so I felt that it was best just to keep everything off right now.
For those that didn't see it, there wasn't anything huge just more or less telling everyone to be patient. The comments started to get speculative and turned into exactly what I didn't want to happen. So I deleted it.
I have been talking to him this whole time, I think I might be one of the few. I just wanted to clear that up, so please don't start posting speculative stuff below this now. Just leave everything alone for now.
I assumed that's why u deleted that. I'm glad u give players the ability to keep things private. Good job Tom.
Very classy, Tom, and we all appreciate it. We'll just let everything run it's course and hope it goes well.
Tom we all look forward to your posts and information on recruits and we all sometimes get a little too carried away. We all just need to let these kids have their moment and take their time making such a life changing decision (especially here lately with Kalis and Wormley). Having said that, you, along with a few others on here (Tim, Magnus, Brian, etc.) garner the most respect from myself and others. Thank you for all you do and keep up the good work.
in another thread. he seems like a decent 3 backup option because i think Mauk will chose us when he decides
Well you got your wish. Hopefully we get Mauk though.
Then my own humble opinion would be to wait to see what happens during the season. There's no reason to rush to offer Simpson or any other developing prospect over the summer. I would wait to see if he (or any other under-the-radar quarterback) develops during the year and then make an offer. No reason to rush at this point unless it's for a top guy.
but I also saw some WR's that may warrant a look. I wonder who those guys were, and what class they'd be in?
Just out of curiosity, if the coaching staff redshirted Russell Bellomy, would that eliminate the need to take a QB in this class?
As I understand it, the reason we want a QB in every class is for continuity after Denard, I guess that's where I'm coming from.
Also, someone posted above that Simpson wouldn't get greyshirted because we already have Shane Morris committed for '13. However, RR took Tate and Denard in the same class. While I understand that was out of necessity because we had no one at QB, we're not in a much better spot now, are we?
It wouldn't really alleviate the need to take a QB. We would still only have three scholarship quarterbacks in 2012, which would not be ideal. Bellomy might redshirt, anyway, but I don't think that will affect the 2012 recruiting class.
