TomVH: Kevin Sousa Has an Offer/Visiting Tuesday

QB Kevin Sousa, from Lake Nona High School, has an offer from Michigan. Kevin's coach just called, and said Rich Rodriguez just called him to let him know that Kevin has an offer. As I wrote a week ago, Kevin was told this offer would be coming. Kevin's interest in Michigan is very high, and his coaches feel the same way. His coach told me their plans for Kevin, and they might move quickly.

We're going to try to get him up there in the next week. It will most likely be Tuesday. We just want him to see everything up there, and make sure that it's something that he likes. Michigan is really high for him, and us. My advice to him was, with Michigan, they're the whole package. The offense they run, the prestige of the school, and he'd have a chance to grow as a quarterback, since he's so new to football. I told him that playing two years at Michigan is a successful career.

Sousa could possibly be up to Michigan this coming Tuesday, and it sounds like there could even possibly be a decision that would come shortly after.

We don't want to say too much, yet. I don't want to speak on behalf of Kevin, but there's a possibility that he could commit while we're there. We're not going there for no reason, that's for sure. I don't want to say he will for sure, but there's a possibility.

So, it sounds like we might be on commit watch for Michigan's next quarterback commitment.

**UPDATE** - Kevin sent me a message, and they have their flight booked. He and his coach are flying up around noon on Tuesday, and flying back the same night. We are officially on commit watch.

Sousa and Frost. Frost has found several opportunities to make it to Auburn, but could never get up to Ann Arbor until this weekend while Sousa gets an offer and books a flight for the next week.

That gives me a good feeling about UM's chances with Sousa and a...not so good feeling about UM's chances with Frost.

How can you compare the two without knowing any background information.  Unofficial visits costs lots of money if you are flying in from out of state, not to mention the time constraints.  Frost wanted to visit with his entire family, which I imagine is harder to get everyone's schedules coordinated.

Greetings from Bolivia.

I really like Kevin. From watching his films he looks like (especially for not having played QB for a long time) he has pretty good patience in the pocket and when he needs to scramble, he doesn't put his head down - he keeps looking down field for his receivers. He is definitely a passer but if he needs to, he can take off and make a defense pay on the run. He is a lot like Devin Gardner in this aspect. Also like DG, he is not super fast but runs very elusively and can stop and accelerate quickly (His best reported time. He has 40 times ranging 4.48, 4.5, 4.69, and 4.92. I think somewhere around 4.6-4.7 is a good guess. He is extremely athletic with a solid build at 6'2'' and 215 and is a load to take down on the run (For reference, DG is 6'4'' 200, Tate is 6'1'' 195, and Denard is 6'0'' 188). Many times he even takes defenders on straight up which is good because he usually makes plays for extra yards but bad because of injury potential.

His release point is not great and neither is his spin on the ball but from his interviews, it sounds like that is what he has been working on most in the off season which is good to hear. He does, however, have a pretty strong arm because he can throw downfield even with out good release or spin. I cant wait to see the zip on his throw once he figures his release out. His throws are not always pretty but he definitely studies the play book and knows exactly where his receivers are going to be and when they are going to get open. His throwing form is a bit of a project but should have plenty of time to develop if Tate and Denard hold it down this year allowing DG to take a redshirt.

As of now, we have two really good h.s. qbs in Tate and DG. DR, judging by spring game only, has improved 100%, and looks like he's very capable.

This puts us in great shape to take players like Kevin and Conelius who may very well develop into fine qbs, but even if not, they have already proven themselves to be fine fb players. Given the size and athleticism of both, they will play somewhere for UM if all goes well in other aspects.  Indications are positive for this position. I'm liking it.

Not sure I agree with the approach either given Michigan's gaping holes everywhere else on the roster like LB, OL and secondary.  I think it is wise for now, however, since Steven Threet left in 2009 and Rodriguez hasn't been able to digest a decent meal nor redshirt a single quarterback since he took the job.

There aren't gaping holes in the secondary, at least not from a numbers standpoint.  We will have 18 defensive backs on the roster next year, including Brown and Hollowell.  That's 3.6 players per position.  If you have 3.6 players for all 22 spots, that's 79.2.  Add in 2 or 3 scholarship special teamers (K, P, maybe a long snapper) and that puts you right near the 85-man limit.  Our numbers at DB are right where they should be.

Scout is reporting that Conelius Jones has been denied entrance to UM by addmissions.

Not sure if this is true or not but it apparently relates to test scores. I believe that we should take a QB in this class even if this isn't true.  However, if it is, then we definitely need a QB in this class.
