TomVH: January 21st Weekend Visitors

Submitted by TomVH on

We might as well get this post up today since the list is growing by the minute it seems. If anyone had concerns about the new coaching staff and their recruiting ability, they're probably not asking anymore. Brady Hoke seems like he's in 10 different places at once, and the buzz they've started to create in a short amount of time has been outstanding. Here's a look at the visitors list so far for this weekend. Remember this list will continue to grow, and could shrink so check back.

  • Commit RB Justice Hayes (4 Star, 5'10", 175 lbs)- Justice being on campus this weekend will help with recruiting. He's been talking up Michigan to quite a few recruits now.
  • DB Stefan McClure (4 Star, 5'11", 170 lbs)- Defensive back out of California. Has a good relationship with Hoke from being at SDSU. I think Michigan has a real shot with Stefan.
  • DB Raymon Taylor (4 Star, 5'10", 165 lbs)- Raymon might decide to wait a little bit to commit, but I think it's safe to say he'll most likely pick Michigan.
  • K Matt Wile - (6'2", 210 lbs)Here's my interview yesterday with Matt's coach. I wouldn't be surprised if Wile was a Wolverine by Tuesday.
  • TE/LB Frank Clark (3 Star, 6'2", 210 lbs)- Glenville prospect that I think Michigan has a good chance with.
  • OL Tony Posada (3 Star, 6'5", 315 lbs)- The coaches were out to Florida this week to see Tony, and I think this visit will be his last. He should be firm to Michigan again.
  • LB Leilon Willingham (4 Star, 6'3", 230 lbs)- I spoke to Leilon's coach today, and it looks like this visit is happening. Willingham is committed to Texas A&M and was supposed to visit the Aggies this weekend. If he cancelled that trip to visit Michigan then that's a pretty strong statement.
  • DB Tamani Carter (3 Star, 5'11", 172 lbs) - Michigan's newest commit is visiting.

I don't think you can understate what an accomplishment it is to get so many guys interested with two weeks left in the process. I know some people are worried about some recruits not being at the top of the talent scale, but think of what the staff can do with the 2012 class when they have a whole year to recruit, especially if they can lock up Jenkins-Stone, Richardson, Ross, and O'Brien before the season starts. They are seemingly recruiting nationally on a nearly impossible timeline, which can only bode well for future classes.

2012 is an extremely important class with the combination of Michigan producing more talent than they normally do, a need for a premier quarterback, and the need for multiple wide receivers to go along with the regular status quo that a program wants to keep going year-to-year. I think the showing Hoke and co. have shown in the last week would make any fan excited about the next year.

It is hard to believe the 180 degree turn that recruiting has taken (or at least our perception of it) in the last several days.  The coaches seem to be moving heaven and earth to snatch victory out of the jaws of defeat.  Whether they get everyone they want or not,  they get a Big A+ for effort.

My days lately have consisted of hitting F5 on MGoBlog, switching tabs and hitting F5 on your Twitter page.  Hopefully after NSD I can get some of my life back.

am I going  to do after National Signing Day at work?

Right now I feel like a bi-polar yo-yo as the last three years have destroyed my confidence in UM football.

I think Brandon maybe a Wunderkind. He had the ability to sell cardboard as food and now Hoke.

"If he cancelled that [TAMU] trip to visit Michigan then that's a pretty strong statement."

Maybe.  Or maybe he's just looking for a free trip and covering all his bases.  Maybe he's been to College Station enough to not need another visit.  I wouldn't necessarily read too much into a guy taking a trip right before signing day.  Its his last chance to do this sort of thing, and, if he's 100% committed to TAMU, he's going to spend a lot of time on their campus in the future.  Reassure your coaches that you're still committed and just taking the trip for fun.

That isn't to say Michigan can't wow him and get him to commit.  But looking around isn't necessarily a strong statement one way or the other. (e.g. HaHa visiting many schools while committed to Alabama).

That's a good assumption.  I thought so too.  But, Blueaggie seems to know his/her stuff. Check it out in the other thread, he/she does have some good insight.

Has our newest commit Carter visited?  I did not recall.

At least one has to be, based on the depth chart. I know there was some talk that Greg Brown could end up being a safety. Raven seems to have the size to become a safety and I know some are thinking Carter would be around safety size after a redshirt year.

If I had to guess then it would be that two of the DB commits from this class will end up at safety. That's just based on looking at the depth chart, though.

Tom, I was seriously concerned that you were going to be bored over the next couple weeks.  I am so glad you are busy and hard at work providing the vital information to help keep this board sane.

Maybe it's me just being hopeful but it sure seems like we have a lot more to be happy about since Hoke has been at the helm. These next couple weeks could be exciting!

Hi All,

Boston College Fan, but love reading this blog.  Anyway, I was perusing BC's message board and a poster who a quarter of the time has great inside knowledge and the rest is just causing trouble as he hates our staff, posted the following about our top (only) QB commit Christian Suntrup.

"Hypothetical... What would you say if Suntrup visits Ann Arbor this weekend?"

With a True Soph starting at BC next year and Michigan's likely change of offensive philosophy, it would "make sense" but the kid has seemed pretty committed.  I didn't see him listed on your incoming recruits this weekend, but then I see follow-up claiming there should be 8.  Figured I'd see if anyone had any info.  Thanks in advance.
