Mike Lantry, 1972
Buchtel High School is home to two big time prospects and good friends in WR Corey Smith and DB Jarrod Wilson. Both are Ohio kids who just happen to be playing for former Michigan running back Ricky Powers. Both of them are starting to pick up some momentum in their recruitment, and Corey talked to me about the latest with Michigan.
TOM: What have the coaches told you about an offer? Are they planning on offering you?
COREY: Jarrod [Wilson] got his offer today, and I talked to Coach Mattison and he wants to sit down with me and talk about everything before they offer. He wants to talk with me about whether I fit on offense or defense, and then we'll talk about an offer.
TOM: When are you guys going to sit down and talk?
COREY: I'm going up there Sunday [for the Best of the Midwest combine] and I'm going to try to stay an extra day, stay until Monday to meet with them. Jarrod will be up there, too.
TOM: What are your plans with your recruitment. You and Jarrod seem close, are you guys trying to go to the same school?
COREY: We're going to the same school, 100%. I don't know where we're going yet, but we're going to the same school.
TOM: How does Michigan play into that?
COREY: We both have very high interest in Michigan. Michigan is definitely in the top 10 with Ohio State, Tennessee, MSU, Nebraska, Georgia, North Carolina, Penn State, Illinois, and UCLA.
TOM: I know your coach is former Michigan player Ricky Powers, what has he told you about Michigan?
COREY: Coach likes to joke and say you lose your emotions when you go up there, you can't control your emotions. I went up there last year for the Michigan State game, so I've been there before.
TOM: How do you see your recruitment playing out? Are you guys going to wait to make your decision?
COREY: Yeah, we're probably going to wait until the Under Armour All American game to announce.
... I see that's worked out well for you.
I got +1 points, son
I'm from Akron. I don't know them but I do have a few friends who do. My old high school is somewhat rivals with Buchtel. It's pretty cool to see kids from my area getting recruited. I plan on going to some of their games this coming season.
Why are so many guys considering MSU? Ugh
maybe because they are in the Big Ten
I think TomVH had said it before that a good year on the field in year 20XX has a greater impact on kids in the 20XX + 1 class than on kids in the 20XX class. I think MSU is getting their respect from 2012 kids b/c of what they did in 2011. I think their 2013 class is going to suck!
Akron seems to have some good players.
This is a pair I'd be happy with. Thanks, Ricky.
I will take two Under Armour All Americans please!!! Plus we have former player in Ricky Powers helping us out.GO BLUE!!!
I had no idea they started inviting kids to the AA games this early.
I'm not sure if I like that he was here for the MSU game last year.. that wasn't a very good day in Ann Arbor..
the weather was perfect that day, but that was all that was good about it.
If they observed all the Juggalos in from EL, there is no way they want to go there for college.
Can throw in some more good words for the Maize and Blue.
Big time back who definitely fit the mold as the #1 tailback back in the day. Never achieved Tyron Wheatley-like status but I bet remains loyal to Michigan. Glad to see he is a successful coach and we know we will get a fair shot at his talented players
Jarrod Wilson: S 6-2 190
Corey Smith:: WR 6-0 175/4.55
I like that letter "S" next to Wilson.
I met Ricky when I was a sophormore and he was a freshman. Really nice guy to go along with being a great running back. He had some huge games for us.
Anyone know how long he's been coaching and what kind of job he's doing? Any aspirations to be a college coach? Just curious...
It's nice to hear from UM grads who go on to be successful. Good luck in the fall Mr. Powers, and as always, Go Blue.
Anybody else notice the terrible secondary coverage out there on the highlight tape? Either Ricky Powers is an expert at play calling, or the competition they're up agains is trash.
Wasn't Corey Smith the receiver who ran around a 4.8 40-time? I thought that was the reasoning for the non-offer. No offense to him but with limited scholarships and all the elite WR offers to this point Smith is very low on my wish list. A 6'0" possession receiver is not my ideal commit at this point.
