TomVH: Ed Davis Update

Submitted by TomVH on

Ed Davis is a linebacker from Southeastern High School in Detroit. Michigan has been targeting Ed since his performance at their summer camp. Everything had seemed to be going good for Michigan until MSU and Iowa offered the 6-foot-3 linebacker. Davis previously held only a few offers from smaller schools, and saw his recruitment take off after a tour of camp visits. Ed also received an offer from Cincinnati, which seemed to peak his interest.

A few visits and some negative recruiting later, and Davis was confused about where he stood. He came out and said that MSU and Iowa were at the top of his list, and then later somewhat retracted that statement.

The coaches must have gotten word of Davis' confusion, and got him and his father on campus for an impromptu visit. That visit just recently happened, and no one really knew until after the fact.

Davis has now said that he has reached his decision, and he's ready to announce. "I'm at about 80% with it," he said about his choice. The schools that he narrowed his list down to are Michigan, Michigan State, Iowa, and Cincinnati (surprise!). "I'll be announcing my decision the day before my first game of the season," Davis told me. I believe their first game is August 28th against Hudsonville, so he will be announcing on the 27th.

He's kept all of this very close to the vest, and won't even really give any insight. People have asked me where I think he'll end up, and I really have no clue. There's been so many twists and turns in this that I got lost at the last fork in the road.

Tom did he happen to mention which schools are negative recruiting? and/or specifically what they are saying? Thanks as always, I'll hang up and listen.

TomVH says explicitly in that thread that it was not MSU and it was not anyone at Detroit Southeastern (i.e., Archie Collins). So that leaves Iowa, or maybe someone else. Anyhow, it seems clear that Tom has promised not to tell, if he knows.

...should probably be invited to see the team in action during pre-season camp. An 80% decision is not a decision, it's an indication of an unsettled mind that could be salved with another shot of Maize and Blue right before his announcement.

Sounds like whom ever he commits to, it won't be a hard commit. That being said of the list of schools mentioned I think the negative recruiting is coming from both Michigan State and Iowa. When your program doesn't sell itself you have to sell something I guess. Here is my sell to you Mr. Davis. Do you want to come to a program rich in tradition and play in front of 110,000 fans at the greatest stadium in the country or go to Iowa where their most known tradition is painting the visitor's locker room pink?

I'm pretty sure all Iowa has to do is point out the fact that one school is 8-16 in two years, no bowl bids and has a coach with an uncertain future while another school is 19-5, defending Orange Bowl champs and an amazingly stable coaching environment.

Some would call that here negative recruting. I'd calling it selling your school compared to one of the other suitors.

Give me a break. Like that is some earth shattering statement from a recruit. If anything, its close to truth.

Why are we so certain around here that Michigan coaches have never once said words to take advantage of a shaky coaching situation? Please, this is a cutthroat business and if Coach A wants to point out the differnece in situations and say Coach B might not be around, come here instead where its stable, whats the big fucking deal. I am sure Michigan used this tactic for years.

Some folks need to grow up and stop the whining on 'negative recruiting'

Stop thinking its all hugs and kisses on the recruiting trail. Listening to some of the whining makes me wonder if the Michigan Arrogance hasnt grown so swarmy that folks expect the opposing coaches to make it easy on our coaches.

Jamie - you just don't get it.

8-16 record, 3-13 conference record, possibility that the bottom falls out and Jim Harbaugh is your corch in 2011, AND ALL THAT TRADITION >>> defending Orange Bowl champions, possible conference champions in 2010, contending for BCS berths NOW, and, AND, actually can develop linebackers, actual linebackers, into legitimate pro prospects.

While I agree with much of what you say, there are at least some lines that should not be crossed.  For example, if a rival coach told a RB recruit "Fred Jackson is leaving the staff after this year" and that was completely made up.  Would you agree that this would be improper negative recruiting?  Or the old trusted "Lloyd Carr has cancer" when Carr was coach.  Seems obvious that there are some lines that should not be crossed.  Where that line lines is hard to gauge and suggesting that a coach might not be there probably does not cross it.  But if a recruit heard "Dave Brandon told me that RR would be fired after this year" from a rival coach and no such discussion ever took place, then that's just wrong.

There's obviously a line. But what evidence do we have that it was crossed? I'd say you can paint a fairly negative picture of Michigan would embellishment:

"Ed, I just think you should remember that Michigan is 8-16 with THREE Big Ten wins in the past two years, while we've been to two bowls and are defending a BCS bowl championship. Our staff has been together in it's entirety for a decade, and are signed long-term, while Michigan has turned over three assistants in their two year tenure, and are probably facing a "win or get fired" season. You should also remember that the NCAA has yet to rule on their sanctions for violating practice time maximums.

Also, just remember that there are currently 6 Hawkeyes playing LB in the NFL, while Michigan took a pre-season All-Big 10 pick two years ago, and has regressed him to the point that he may not even start for them this year. They have two linebackers, one entering his 4th year of starting at LB, the other entering his 3rd, and neither are considered to have any potential for a professional career."

Cosign.

The only point at which the negative recruiting dies down is when RR and staff manage to lead the team to more wins than losses on a yearly basis. It won't do much good if we go 8-4 this year and follow it up with 6-6 in 2011.

  1. I never said it was earth shattering, just that it's negative recruiting.
  2. Just b/c a guy says something that's true doesn't mean it's not negative recruiting.
  3. I never said we didn't negative recruit, I am just pointing out (as did Tom VH) that other coaches negatively recruited against us in this case.
  4. So if it's "whats the big fucking deal?" then what, in your opinion is negative recruiting?  Does it even exist?
  5. If anyone's whining, it's you: "Oh come on," "Give me a break," "Please," "Stop thinking its all hugs and kisses," wah, wah, wah.

Well, yes and no. He's given an interview at the Scout sites.....to the Hawkeye Insider blogger.

That ought to tell everyone something here.

greatest stadium in the country? That place is a sardine can that actually should only seat about 85,000. Ed Davis will be a Spartan. He's no dummy. He know's Dickrod will be gone this season.
