TomVH: Commit Caleb Stacey Visit Reaction
Michigan grabbed a verbal commitment from Oak Hills offensive lineman Caleb Stacey (6'4", 275 lbs) back in March. The commitment came directly after a visit to West Virginia mainly because Stacey said he just knew Michigan was the right place. The decision was made so quickly that his parents never had the chance to see Ann Arbor or the campus.
Stacey brought his parents up to Michigan for the first time today to show them what he fell in love with. "Since it was their first time up there they were really impressed with everything," he said. "First we went to the academic center and they were blown away."
The academic presentation is usually a topic of discussion for parents after a Michigan visit, and this time was no different. "My mom, this was really only her second visit. She came with me to Miami (Ohio) and she was so happy that she teared up a little bit," said Caleb. "She looked at me and said great choice." The academics and support that Michigan provides not just during football, but after his college career really seemed to strike a chord with the Stacey family.
"After that we checked out the trophy room and we saw all the facilities," he said. "My dad was really excited about the Big House. He said he can't wait to get there for a game." Mom is excited about academics and dad is excited for the game, sounds like the norm. The Stacey's also got a chance to meet with Caleb's future position coach Darrell Funk. Coach Hoke was unavailable but the family took enough away to feel more than comfortable with their son's choice.
...to read. As the parent of college students, I can tell you that it's a huge deal to know that the chosen school is the right school. I'm sure that adding D-I football to the mix magnifies this tenfold.
Homonym alert: chord, not cord.
great points. No homonym. hehe
I transferred to UofM. I did so sight unseen after being surprised I was accepted (...it is the best helmet in the country afterall). I made great lasting friends at Miami but never regretted the decision. When I arrived for Fall Semester I was smitten immediately.
We are blessed to have a top tier school in an awesome American city. I now live close to Oxford/Cinci and the area is not too shabby but it does not measure up to Ann Arbor/Detroit and the beauty of Michigan. Hard to beat it unless you can globetrot. I appreciate and identify with the reaction of Caleb and his parental units regarding the campus and community. Pulling for all of the new recruits! GO BLUE
Thanks be to Tom, great post as always.
That's a fantastic write up. I think you did a good job of conveying the emotion that went into the decision and the support from mom and dad.
"...she was so happy, she teared up."
In this case, Caleb picked the school and then brought his folks up for a visit. I almost think this is better than the parents visiting with the kid and helping him choose. Not that they didn't help with the decision...they raised him and are a part of his every decision. What I'm getting at is he made a choice as a man and now he has to work to ensure that decision is sound. I think that is a strong commitment in itself.
It reminds me of how and when I "knew" I wanted to be at U of M. Welcome to the family, Caleb.
Cigarro, what's your problem dude? Why the thumbs down?
Got a call on the cell phone & had moved my mouse & clicked on downvote by error. Vote switched to UP Vote. Sorry blue nation, unintentional honest mistake. !
Why such e-cowardice? If you're going to neg someone, do it good and hard, and never apologize.
Mom would have also teared up if she ever recieved an out of state tuition bill. This was heartwarming to read and good for you Caleb.
The 'ole "finger slip" excuse...
Liar liar vest on fire!

I'm thrilled to have a high-caliber guy like this at Michigan. Seems like he's really into being a team player, and a hard worker.
Congratulations, to you, Caleb, and to your Mom and Dad who can probably sleep a lot better knowing that you'll be a Michigan Man.
stacey's mom has got it going on!
sorry
Is it just me or does stacey look Anthony Zettel?
It is clear as day. They are both white.
The hair is a little similar, but Caleb would win out on the Bachlorette.
