Threet relegated to the IM Building

Submitted by spybucks182 on

So there I was, shooting around earlier this afternoon in the IM building with my roommate. I scanned the courts to see if there were any worthy challengers for some two and two. Besides IM building employees cleaning up instant scheduling for racquetball, and a couple kids per hoop, there were a couple guys at the far end of the courts throwing a football. I took a closer look at the taller guy of the two. He was decked out in michigan gear and he had that familiar grizzly beard. At this point I was not mistaken it was Steven Threet. He could tell that I recognized him as I kept looking over. Sadly, his throws looked no better than those dying ducks he was throwing against Toledo. At first I felt a twinge of sadness for this guy. He goes from the starting quarterback of Michigan to tossing a ball around with his friend hoping to not lose that feeling of throwing the ball. He gradually extended his distance to the court I was playing on, but his throws did not improve. I really do hope Threet finds a school that fits his skill set. He has had a terrible run of luck with coaching changes. Even though Threet gave us a mix of highs and lows he really does seem to have a passion for the game and I think he should go to a school that has a stable coaching situation.

I guess the fact that he was fully dressed in UM appearal says something about his leaving. I would think if he was leaving on bad terms with RR that he would not suppoert the university that RR is the figure head for.

I was on the bus with some guys when threet walked on earlier this week and he got the "I thought you quit" treatment from my buddy. He just kind of shrugged it off but I think he has been getting that a lot, feel bad for the kid but he should have stayed. No offense to him but he doesnt have much pro upside unless he figures out what accuracy means, might as well get a good degree.

First, you don't want friends like that. Second, Michigan (my alma mater) is not the only place to get a good degree. And, this debate's been had, but I think it's worth repeating: if he wants to play in the NFL, you can't really blame him for chasing that dream, even if it means transferring again, can you? Who's to say that in a different system, one more tailored to his pro-style abilities, he can't develop into a decent quarterback prospect?

Second everything you said. Friend sounds like a jerk, or at least someone with weak social skills.

Also, and I know this blows some people away, but you can get a good degree at other schools. He was accepted at both GT and UM, and he had really good grades in HS. I'm sure that even if he never steps foot onto a football field again, he'll still find a way to get by in life and find some career that will make him happy.

Finally, the notion that you have to play at a major D-1 school to get drafted by the pros is kind of crazy, especially at QB. I mean, how many starting NFL QBs has Florida, Miami, Oklahoma, and OSU pumped out in the past decade or so? By comparison, guys from Delaware, Central Washington, UConn, Marshall, Southern Miss, University of Northern Iowa, Miami (not that Miami), etc. all started this season, and I wouldn't be surprised to see a few more "small-school" guys break through. If you have the skill, you will get your chance in the NFL. Sure, it may be easier to get your foot in the door coming from a big school, but that's about it.

I second that, your friend sounds like a jerk to say something like that without knowing what really happened. He's lucky he didn't get his butt kicked.

Why are people treating Threet like he's a villain in this situation? It's not like he pulled a Henson. He didn't leave Michigan high and dry for money only after he basically persuaded the coaching staff to not go after any top rated QBs. That is how we ended up with John Navarre at QB afterall.

While Threet's decision is a curious one, we have no idea if RR didn't basically pull him into his office and tell him that he's already behind Tate on the spring depth chart. Hell maybe he told him that he's going into spring #3.

Threet's decision may come back to bite him. But it's his decision and I don't think he owes us fans anything.

Michigan changes coaches as often as I change condoms....almost never. How is that unstable? He has had some shit luck but he's a good guy with a dream. Let him chase it.

I am a fan of Threet. Wish he had stayed, hope he does awesome at his next stop.

However, can we stop with meme that he's screwed by coaching changes....unless the one at UM was so big that it counts as a plural.

At Ga Tech, Chan Gailey was still coaching when he transferred....Paul Johnson was still at Navy......considering Gailey had come off a division title and the worst kept secret was that 2007 was Lloyd's swan song, he knew a change was in the works at UM and had no idea a change would eventually be made at Tech.

Yes, the move to RR hurt him.....but Tech's move to PJ came many months after he left Atlanta for Ann Arbor.

Not hating on the Diary....its just I see this implication or even taken as fact contstantly.....it's not true.

I think the better way to look at it was "he was going to be screwed no matter what". He didn't know Paul Johnson was going to be the coach when he left GT, but if he had stayed, there was know way he was playing, in retrospect, over Nesbitt. At Michigan, he may OF known that Carr was leaving, but I'm sure he wasn't planning on entering a system that required him to run.

Regardless, the reason he's still wearing Michigan clothes, I'm sure is because they're free, he has plenty of them, and he's been a Michigan fan for his entire life - that was the reason he transferred here in the first place.

And to be clear - it seems the reason he left isn't even because he doesn't want to play in this system - he made a game effort last year - but because he didn't feel he had a chance to play at all.

Threet just isn't good enough to be a major college QB. I hope he gets a degree somewhere. I am still hoping he goes home to Adrian, starts for a year, and has a great life.

I don't think he should be vilified, but I don't see him as a sympathetic figure, either. He's not the only kid who got to college and found out he didn't have enough talent to play at that level. I'm sure he's a nice kid, but there really isn't much of a market for QB's who can't throw at a major college level and can't run.

Playing sports is a privilege, not a birthright. And it's not a crime or a tragedy to fail. He tried and failed. I feel a lot less sorry for Threet than I do for countless kids from disadvantaged backgrounds who didn't have family and education as a fallback.

Threet's family can afford to send him to college if he can't find another scholly and he probably won't be going hungry anytime soon. He can go home to a nice house in a nice neighborhood until he gets his shit together.

What's to feel sorry for?

I agree. Not to go all Britney-kid on everyone, but just leave Steven Threet alone. I have never understood the fascination with people taking pot shots at a 19-year-old kid every chance they get just because he transferred. Yeah, he struggled mightily at times this year. He was also playing in his third offensive system in 3 years, was injured early on, and played on one of the worst UM teams in decades. Did his play contribute to these struggles? Sure, but so did every other player on the squad. I wish him the best wherever he ends up, and I think he will be a serviceable QB in college given the right system. He might not be a superstar, but I doubt everyone on these boards are the best at what they do.

One somewhat unrelated CCRB story - my roommate told me when he stopped by to play basketball at the CCRB back in the early 00's, he saw Lavell Blanchard playing some pick-up. Apparently some kid tried to take it right at Lavell, who blocked the shot, took the ball the length of the court, waited for the same kid to start guarding him, then dunked right over him. The game was apparently called right then and there, as the kid died from a public, flying tea-bagging.

Seriously, how many times are you going to say this? Steven Threet was a 4-star, Elite-11 QB. Now you're saying he can't even make it in the FCS?

Believe it or not, players improve from their Freshman to Senior years. The player you saw on the field, behind a horrendous line with no running game and a single experienced receiver, is not the player Threet will be in perpituity. I can assure you, beyond the shadow of a fucking DOUBT, that Threet didn't leave Michigan to play football at D-III Adrian College. I also guarantee you that there will be a number of schools in Division I (FBS or FCS) who will try to attract his services.

...but how about we just leave the kid alone? How many times do we run into people who have gotten academic scholarships to Michigan (or any other school), enroll, and lose their scholarships because of poor grades or because they just didn't like the place? This situation is no different and Threet is no different. He's a student athelete. If he didn't want to continue playing at Michigan anymore, that's fine. He tried and gave it his all, and it just didn't work out. He didn't try to dupe us or leave us high and dry. Let's not analyze everything about any chance encounter with him on campus. Because I'm sure that all of us has quit something before at some point in our lives.

Also, I'm highly skeptical that a kid who garnered more than ten offers from BCS conference schools is incapable of throwing a spiral.

i hope threet does well if he does indeed decide to play somewhere else. and although i disagree that just b/c he was a 4* prospect in HS that he will be a good college QB, i think he has enough talent to play somewhere. but this is weird. he is certainly taking his time with 'transferring' somewhere else. if i was still a student i'd be first in line to see if he had a IM team come fall...

I thought it was illegal to play football on campus if you're not actually on the football team?

Seriously though... I'm surprised he's still around. Maybe the fish aren't bitin' (and by fish I mean interested D-II schools, of course)?
