A Song for the Season

Submitted by Blazefire on

It seems a long, long time ago
but I can still remember,
how that music used to make them smile
And I knew if he had his chance
that he could make those players dance,
and maybe we'd be happy, for a while.
But the off season made me shiver,
with every paper they'd deliver.
Bad news on the program,
It blocked out good like a logjam.
I can't remember if I cried when
I read their vitrol and their lies,
but I felt a touchdown deep inside
the day the team still tried.

So bye, bye sunny summer sky.
Took my tailgate to the bighouse
to watch this team fly.
110,000 and not a head shy,
Singin', "This is the day the offseason dies,
"This'll be the day that we try."

Now, did you write "Let's Go Blue",
and do you have faith in the number twos,
if the head coach tells you so?
Now do you believe in the spread attack,
and can we win with a 3-3 Stack
and can your QB throw on the go?
Now I know that you have faith in Rod,
and on the enemy we will trod.
You all sang "The Victors".
Make noise, yellers and whistlers!
I was a signle fan in a giant crowd
With a Michigan jersey and a voice turned loud
But I knew I could be proud,
the day the team still tried!

So bye, bye sunny summer sky.
Took my tailgate to the bighouse
to watch this team fly.
110,000 and not a head shy,
Singin', "This is the day the offseason dies,
"This'll be the day that we try."

Now, the AD tried to calm the noisy herd,
about the things they heard from Rosenberg
And a hope that came from you and Me.
Yes, Brandon raised his pimp hand high,
to silence the whiner's, loser's cry,
and he will set the program free.
Oh and while the herd was crying out,
the team ignored their angry shout!
The herd's cries showed no merrit.
When push came to shove, they didn't tear it.
And while Rodriguez read a book on Bo,
Lloyd Carr decided to take it nice and slow
and we prepared our tailgate stuff to go,
the day the team still tried.

So bye, bye sunny summer sky.
Took my tailgate to the bighouse
to watch this team fly.
110,000 and not a head shy,
Singin', "This is the day the offseason dies,
"This'll be the day that we try."

Oh, Helter Skelter in an early fall swelter,
Icy beer was poured with cheeseburgers on the melter
Three burners on and grilling FAST!
The beanbag fell and landed on the grass,
while two kids tossed back and forth a pass,
with the AD in his skybox, to relax!
Now at kickoff there was this crazy kid,
Paralyzed, he had hit the skids.
We all got up to cheer, oh and
Never did he veer!
Walking with his brother, to lead the team
He walked out straight, our faces abeam
We'll all remember that epic scene,
the day the team still tried!

So bye, bye sunny summer sky.
Took my tailgate to the bighouse
to watch this team fly.
110,000 and not a head shy,
Singin', "This is the day the offseason dies,
"This'll be the day that we try."

And there we were all at one field.
A group of fans that refused to yield.
With no time left to wait again.
Now Roh be nimble, Roh be quick!
Craig Roh will run through blockers thick,
because blockers are a Husky's only friend!
And as I watched him on that field,
my hate it boiled, it did not yield.
That bastard from the East coast,
not fit to walk the ground of Yost.
And as the battle raged on into the night
to start the season on up right
I saw Rich Rod laughing with delight,
the day the team still tried!

So bye, bye sunny summer sky.
Took my tailgate to the bighouse
to watch this team fly.
110,000 and not a head shy,
Singin', "This is the day the offseason dies,
"This'll be the day that we try."

I saw a girl who was on the band,
and in victory she raised her hand,
and then she cheered and marched away.
I went down to the MDen store,
where I'd gotten my first shirt, years before,
but the man there said they were sold out for the day.
And into the streets the people streamed,
the fans cheered on and the students screamed.
But not a sad word was spoken.
The enemy had been broken.
And  three of the men I admire most,
Fritz Crisler, Schembechler and our Yost,
sent us dreams of New Years on the West Coast,
the day the team still tried.

So bye, bye sunny summer sky.
Took my tailgate to the bighouse
to watch this team fly.
110,000 and not a head shy,
Singin', "This is the day the offseason dies,
"This'll be the day that we try."
Singin, "This'll be the day that we try."

Wow.  I almost tl;dr'd it until I read the first line & realized it was "The Day the Music Died" so I decided to read on.

Song parodies aren't often very good IMHO but this was awesome!  Well done!

Perfectly captures the mood of probably all of us right now.

I hate the be that guy but it's bothering me that such perfection has a flaw.  Loser's, not looser's in verse 3.  Awesomely done though, very nice.

And for anyone wanting to play this, it's pretty basic chord structure:

What a great idea! Why didn't I think of it? Song parodies can be so great... Stairway to Freebird, e.g., doesn't need anything more than its title.

I second the Alice's Restaurant nomination. On the other hand, one to avoid at almost all costs would be Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.

Blaze - this is fabulous. Bra-to-the-vo!

love this line:

And  three of the men I admire most,
Fritz Crisler, Schembechler and our Yost,
