Soccer chants at football games

Submitted by antoo on
I am surprised at the number of soccer fans on this board including our leader and savior, Brian.  With that, I'm sure most of us fans are familiar with the chants and cheers that go on during matches and I was wondering if any college football teams have adopted anything like that and could you see Michigan doing it.  I'm not talking Seven Nation Army or even You'll Never Walk Alone but more player specific.  I get pretty annoyed when ND fans do the "Hughes" moan because it's rather boring.  I was thinking something more along the lines of That Boy Ronaldo or the Torres Armband chant.

Obviously we would change Ronaldo for a current M player (Forcier maybe?) and change the "plays on the left" part to something different (he throws/runs/rolls to the left/right?) and finally change the England to whoever we're playing that day.  Maybe sing it after a TD.  I figure it's something simple that most people would be able to pick up on after hearing it once or twice.

He throws to the left
He throws to the riiiiight
That boy Tate Forcier makes State/Iowa/Ohio State look shite

(Link again)

Since there are a lot of lines in this one, maybe just do the Na Nar parts and maybe put in "Miller, Ricardo Miller, Michigan's #1" after good grab or "Turner, JT Turner, Michigan's #2" after an INT.  Again, it's pretty simple and most would be able to pick up on it.

I'm not limiting us to those but they're pretty easy to learn and adapt.  I really like it as long as it's something simple and that it could very easily catch on since it would unique to college football (I think?  I can't think of a school that does it).

What do you guys think, good or bad idea?  Anyone else have a good chant to use, maybe something more original?    Please no actual soccer talk; I don't want to start a flame war.

**Note** -  I love The Victors, Temptation and all that good shit and I am by no means trying to say it isn't good enough.  I was shooting for more along the lines of player specific like the examples I posted.

***Edit -  This is my first diary post and I don't know why the videos won't show.  I've posted videos in the forum.  Anyone want to help a brother out?

I actually live in Seattle and hold season tickets to the MSL team here (Seattle Sounders FC). One of the fan groups does a chant that sounds really cool called "Take 'em All." You can listen to it at: http://www.weareecs.com/media/songs/

I like the sound of it from a distance; it has potential but the actual words to the chant are actually not that great:

"Take ‘em all,
Take ‘em all,
Put ‘em up against a wall and shoot ‘em,
Short n tall, watch ‘em fall,
Come on boys, take ‘em all"

I think that third line is something more fitting for the Horseshoe than the Big House. UM folks would probably need to refine this before putting it to use.

This is a Cock Sparrer song. [Fun fact: Cock Sparrer has a song based on "You'll Never Walk Alone" {the football cheer that uses the schmaltz song, not the schmaltz song itself}]. If the Big House needs something unique, almost every song in Cock Sparrer's catalog could be turned into something anthemic.

Go Sounders!

ECS actually does quite a few chants that would be relevant, most of which is a call/reply chant that goes like so:

** To the tune of "When The Saints Go Marching In"
Our garden shed
(our garden shed)
Is bigger than this
(is bigger than this)
Our garden shed is bigger than this
It has a door and a window
Our garden shed is bigger than this

Granted it would only fit for road games but it is only 4 different lines, I think it would be easy to learn

I would LOVE for this to happen. I think the student section would definately go for it, but its hard to just implement all of the sudden. I've definately enjoyed even the addition of the Seven Nation Army chant, its a baby step.

PS MAJOR PROPS to EGD, Seattle has the best loudest and roudiest fan base in MLS in just their first year!

I won't neg someone for their opinion, but as a student in the student section and a fan of M football in general: Seven Nation Army is one of the cheesiest, worst things that's happened to Michigan football this year.

Seriously, why not just steal Penn State's music sheets and just have the band play it seven times a drive. Or let's play it for kick offs like OSU.

in the SE area of Stadium. Can someone tell me what the seven nation army chant is?

EDIT --

Nevermind -- I googled it. How/why did this come about and what part of the following lyrics do students sing?

I'm gonna fight 'em all
A nation army couldn't hold me back
They're gonna rip it off
Taking their time right behind my back

And I'm talking to myself at night
Because I can't forget
Back and forth through my mind
Behind a cigarette
And the message coming from my eyes
Says leave it alone

Don't want to hear about it
Every single one's got a story to tell
Everyone knows about it
From the Queen of England to the hounds of hell

And if I catch it coming back my way
I'm gonna serve it to you
And that aint what you want to hear
But thats what I'll do
And the feeling coming from my bones
Says find a home

I'm going to Wichita
Far from this opera for evermore
I'm gonna work the straw
Make the sweat drip out of every pore
And I'm bleeding, and I'm bleeding, and I'm bleeding
Right before the lord
All the words are gonna bleed from me
And I will sing no more
And the stains coming from my blood
Tell me go back home

Sadly you may be grinding your teeth in anger four times a game for a while longer,

I sit in the student section also, and everyone around me gets pretty amped up for it. I really doubt they'll take it out this season.

Yes obviously Temptation is the best, but new things are refreshing.

i sit in the student section as well, and all of the students around me go crazy for it...i dont really mind it, whatever gets the crowd up...plus dont know if you noticed, but after the ND game the students did an impromptu "Seven Nation Army Chant" while we were celebrating with the players after the victors

Something like

"He runs to the left
then throws to the riiiiiight
That boy Tate Forcier
makes Pryor look shite"

perhaps? You could tailor it to the opposing starter that day if you wanted...

how about: if the kids are united - sham 69

i used to wear my yellow sex pistols t-shirt to games when i was a student. that way i'd blend in to the sea of maize, but i was still a little different. i was very anti-establishment (read: i was kind of a poseur).

I don't know that it's plausible to incorporate a song like the proposed Forcier one into the student section's cheers. It would be hard for people to pick it up, and even if they did I don't know how many people would actually want to do it. Also, I'm really not sure how I feel about saying "shite" in a cheer.

If it WAS possible to coordinate a song with the student section, though, like You'll Never Walk Alone, then the results could be awesome. I'd have to suggest Varsity as the song.

Soccer chants are cool, at a soccer game. Trying to use them in football just robs them of all their style and uniqueness. Similar thing happened at SC when they started selling Trojans soccer scarves. While I think the scarves are a cool element of international soccer, people wearing them to a football game all looked like d-bags.

We should stick to the MMB and traditional chants like "Let's Go Blue" to generate game atmosphere. Also, if you need to get more excited about Michigan football, no amount of chanting is going to help you.

I love the chants and songs from the Premier League and Euro soccer. As a Liverpool fan I would love to hear a Michigan player rendition of the Fernando Torres song. The Steve Gerrard song is great as well.

When I was a junior I wanted to chant this:

Where do we throw?!
MARIO!

I think somewhere in the back of my mind there's a Fatboy Slim song with slightly different words.
