SEC Speed

Submitted by Zaqataq on

Florida football and track commit Jeff Demps ran a 10.01 100m on Saturday at the olympic trials.  It's the fastest 100m ever by a teenager and he was second to current world champion Tyson Gay in his semifinal heat.  He finished out of the money in the finals, so he won't make the Olympic team... but damn, that's fast.  (He smoked Trindon Holliday, who ran a pedestrian 10.17 and didn't qualify for the finals)

Track speed does not always translate to football speed, nor does it mean he's a good football player. First, running in a straight line with no obstacles is a lot different than changing directions and avoiding defenders. Secondly, rarely does a football player need to run a full 100 meters, so those times can be deceiving. Sure, you'd love the guys on your team to be as fast as possible, but Carl Tabb was an uber-fast track star and he was hardly a contributer. I put some but little weight in that.

Remember how slow we looked during the Horror?  It wasn't that we were slower (outside of the one hyper fast WR they had), it was that we were out of position and off balance with what they were trying to do.  Compare us to Florida and we were faster, or at least were able to play faster than Florida.  It was all about preparation and coaching.
