is there such a thing as an etsy genuis? if so, this is it.
Last year witnessed the introduction of the most thrilling contest the sports world has ever known:
THE KNOWLEDGE CHALLENGE
Unfortunately THE CHALLENGE did not complete its entire course due to the highly irregular discontinuity in the spatio-temporal continuum of this universe, as THE KNOWLEDGE pointed out in one of his posts last year
this year, THE CHALLENGE has made its appearance again, and will through the course of the football season, notwithstanding any unexpected discontinuities
once the season starts, THE CHALLENGE will assume its usual form wherein the competitors will pick the score of the Michigan game, and the one(s) to predict the correct or closest score will be anointed as THE KNOWLEDGE's PROTEGE OF THE WEEK
as usual, THE KNOWLEDGE will only provide pointers to each game in order to aid in appropriate score selection (except, of course, for the first game where THE KNOWLEDGE will reveal the score himself, thus eliminating THE CHALLENGE for Week 1
at the end of the season, the person that has earned the POTW honors the highest number of times, or who has predicted the best overall will earn the greatest honor on this very blog:
TOP FRIEND OF THE KNOWLEDGE
as everyone knows, these honors are extraordinary in nature and the attainment of the ultimate honor of TOP FRIEND will instantly lend credibility and celebrity to the winner
as an addition for the year, THE CHALLENGE debuts RIGHT NOW (with this very post) in a different form
in this version of THE CHALLENGE, the reader is asked to predict the participants in the BSC title game in Jan 2012, and the winner of that game (the mythical national champion)
there is no need to predict the score of that game, as that is beyond the scope of other individuals on this board. any attempt to predict the score will automatically disqualify that person
the winner of this edition of THE CHALLENGE will be honored at the end of the season along with the TOP FRIEND as CO-SOARER OF THE KNOWLEDGE
as a pointer to significantly increase everyone's chances of winning, THE KNOWLEDGE would like to reveal that the title game participants will come from the following pool:
Baylor, LSU, Wisconsin, Oregon, Michigan, Oklahoma, Boise State, Western Michigan and TCU
since the results of this will not be known until the end of the year, THE KNOWLEDGE is also posting a smaller CHALLENGE, titled THE QUESTION
THE QUESTION is how many bowl games will OSU, Columbus be banned from playing in (other than the ones for which they don't qualify)
competitors are encouraged to predict the answers to both THE QUESTION and THE CHALLENGE
I predict - zero bowl bans
I predict - Oklahoma over FSU
I predict - I will be CO-SOARER OF THE KNOWLEDGE
We must be approaching football season. The Knowledge is revving things up.
(In Craig's voice) If I could be top friend of THE KNOWLEDGE, I'd be soooo happy.
For shits and giggles, Michigan over LSU, and 2
THE QUESTION: = two bowl bans
THE CHALLENGE = Oklahoma and Oregon (and these would have been my picks regardless of your list) - Champion = Oklahoma
THE CHALLENGE: Oklahoma over Boise St.
THE QUESTION: 2 bowls
2 bowls, Oklahoma vs LSU Ok wins
michigan over tcu, 3 bowls
I'm going outside the list (!) and saying Alabama vs. Oklahoma, and a 1 year bowl ban for OSU.
I predict Alabama vs. Oklahoma with OU as the winner.
But, I'd say (and hope) 2 year bowl ban by the time everything is said and done. It might not happen with the August meeting, but after Ohio is hit with more crap, it will have to be that long.
but they wont be #1 at the end. Losing the Big 12 championship game, and Nebraska, practically makes the conference a mid-major. It increases their chances of going undefeated, but they don't have strength of schedule anymore, and they don't have the marquee Prime Time matchup against a top 10 ranked opponent at seasons end. TCU has a better shot of running the table in the Big East than OU does, even after losing their qb. If the Big12 were smart they would've added TCU and maybe Air Force or Nevada or Tulsa to offset Colorado and Nebraska leaving. They need to score 50 pts every game to offset what the conference has lost and playing 1 fewer than everybody else now, but they lost their OC too so it could be a bumpy year for them.
Still, as long as OU doesn't lose, and I don't think they will, the should retain the #1 spot. Maybe a close win could see someone leap-frog them, but I doubt it. That close win would have to be to a lousy team.
The only real tough games they have (and are tough enough to keep them at the top if they win) are FSU away and Ok State in Stillwater. If they can make it through those two they should be in the championship game. The OSU game is their last game of the season and hopefully is a fun watch.
Oklahoma still has Oklahoma State, Texas, and Texas A&M in its conference, and even though Texas was mediocre last year, they'll be above-average at worst this year. They have a great strength of schedule, playing a preseason top-10 FSU team in Tallahassee, nine conference games including a marquee season-ending matchup with their little brother (and fellow top-ten team) Oklahoma State. That would be their marquee primetime matchup at the season's end. TCU will not be moving to the Big East until 2012. IMHO, The Big Twelve is still way better than the Big East, and it may be better than the ACC as well. If Oklahoma doesn't run the table (which is a definite possibility), they'll probably be out, but if they go undefeated they'll be in.

THE QUESTION: 2

we (unfortunately), TCU, Boise, Baylor and Western have no chance to win the MNC, apparently The Knowledge knows that either OK, LSU, Wisconsin or Oregon will win. That is news in itself.
