Reflections on a trip to Happy Valley

Submitted by SpikeFan2016 on

I know a few people have made this post after the Minnesota and Indiana road games, and I loved reading them despite not going to those games, so I decided to share my experience yesterday at Penn State.

Getting in and out of State College: Central PA truly is an aesthetically beautiful place. The mountains (if you grew up out West you'd probably call them hills because they aren't THAT big) completely surround PSU and there are forests all around. Happy Valley itself is not that wooded (near the stadium feels kind of farmy), but still very pretty. Without a doubt, this is the most scenic locale of any Big Ten school/stadium. Approaching from the northwest, we took a scenic backroad route in through Black Moshannon State Park and it was absolutely stunning. Probably took us 15-20 minutes longer than the highways would've, but the slight detour was well worth it driving through deep woods and up and down switchbacks on the mountains (especially during a sunny morning! Would've been outstanding if the game was in October with fall colors). Yes, getting out is a nightmare. Never seen so many fans post-game tailgate anywhere(especially after a loss). However, once we got to I-99 there was no traffic on the highway. Generally, the drive from Ann Arbor really is not that terrible (around 6 hours) and there are plenty of cheap places to stay "Clearfield, Clarion, DuBois" on the way to PSU that won't make you have to pay for a State College hotel (we stayed in DuBois; lots of Michigan fans at the Best Western there).

The town/campus: I walked through most of the campus and also the college town area where most of the bars and eateries are. I wasn't very impressed with this part, especially the latter. The campus itself is very spread out. A few pretty areas, but everything kind of looks similar (brown brick). I love the diversity of architecture on U of M's campus and PSU definitely does not have that; very similar feel campus wise to Michigan State. The town area was decent, but nothing special; State College definitely doesn't come close to Ann Arbor in terms of a small town cosmopolitan feel.

Tailgating: Penn State is a fantastic place to tailgate if you enjoy the classic "out of the trunk of your car" setup. Lots are plentiful on all sides of the stadium. Even the students tailgate in parking lots, which definitely does not happen at Michigan. Nothing was too rowdy when we were there, but it was a November noon game they were expected to lose, so not exactly indicative of all games.

The stadium: Ugly (from the outside, anyways; and from inside the concourse). Built like an erector set and the stadium concourse is literally just a massive grid of exposed steel beams. Looks like it's under construction even though it's not. However, once in your seats, it is a very impressive venue. Looks great and the White Out really is an amazing college football atmosphere. Definitely can get loud. Louder than the Big House because of the structure, but not by as big of a margin as PSU fans would like to think. The We Are chant is the most impressive of their chants in my opinion. Penn State definitely uses much more piped in music than we do. I thought they used a little bit too much; however, their selection of it was great (they actually played current hits in addition to annoying Dad Rock that Michigan exclusively sticks to). At one point the whole crowd sang along to "Shut Up and Dance". The worst thing is that terrible lion roar they pipe in; it was cool the first few times but very over used. Also, they did have a few instances of blaring sirens when we were on Third Down, which seems a little too artificial to me. They also used fireworks, both before the game and after PSU touchdowns. Finally, I really hated the scoreboards. The layout of information was confusing, they didn't show any game scores from anywhere else on the board, and they are rectangular instead of squares which is weird.

Michigan Fan Attendance: Michigan fan turnout was decent, although not overwhelming. The away section in the north endzone was full and there were some people scattered throughout the lower bowl. I actually sat next to three groups of Michigan people and I was not in the Michigan section (we were on the West Sideline). There were more Michigan fans there than it looked on TV (I have since rewatched the game) because a) a lot were in blue instead of maize and hard to notice on TV and b) the West Sideline (not the one shown on TV) definitely had more Michigan fans than the East Sideline (shown on TV). It seems as if most of the Michigan fans present were East Coast Wolverines from those I talked to. We had an amazing "Beat Ohio" chant going in the final few minutes, which I think they found amusing (Definitely think they hate OSU more than us). The away section also had a few "DE-FENSE" and "Let's Go Blue!" chants.

Treatment of Michigan Fans: This was the biggest surprise. I had heard a lot of things about how PSU fans are very hostile to visitors, but we were treated very well by the Penn State fans. Nearly everyone was pleasant. We chatted a bunch with those seated around us and, even though I was sitting in a non-visitors section, I felt completely comfortable cheering loudly for Michigan. Nobody ever said anything when we yelled. Walking around before the game, we did get a few "Michigan Sucks or Fuck Michigan", but it was few and far between. (They have this thing where they say "It's 10:02 AM (or any random time) and Michigan still sucks" which I found kind of funny. I wonder if this started in the Hoke years after the fake "resurgence" in 2011). Again, this could've been due to the noon game factor, or the fact that they aren't as good as us this year, but Penn State fans were very accomodating and I was impressed with their hospitality.

Random Thoughts: PSU fans are not high on Franklin. There were multiple times that the stadium booed conservative playcalling. Reminded me a lot of last year in the Big House/Brady Hoke in general "he can recruit well but he can't coach!" God am I happy that we are past that.

All in all, a fantastic road trip and victory in Happy Valley! I would recommend the voyage to any Michigan fan; iconic Big Ten stadium and atmosphere in a beautiful location that really isn't too far from Michigan or the big East Coast cities.

Agreed. I went to visit a friend who's a student at PSU and had a great time. The fans were all incredibly nice minus a douche here and there but everyone has that.

Getting into the student section was a cluster fuck though. It was just a mass of people with no well defined lines and it took forever to get in, a lot worse than Michigan Stadium.

I had a little trouble getting in the stadium as I was using a PSU student ID and I was dressed in all Michigan gear. The first card checker turned me down but I went to a different one who thankfully let me in. Some punches were also thrown while in line because of cutting, and security was no where to be found.

Locating and getting to our seats was also a pain, and we were with PSU students. Once we were there though the atmosphere was great and most of the PSU fans were incredibly nice. Tailgating in the fields was fun too.

I also appreciate Michigan bars so much more now. Penn State had a lot more bars in a more condensed area, but the lines were ridiculous at every place. Pretty much everywhere was like Ricks on a Saturday night at midnight.

We were at the game as well (section WH, row M) and I concur with a few things you said in my own observations.

-We were treated very well

-Tailgating was nice and very easy to do

-Penn State fans are NOT happy with Franklin.

Do they still do that cheesy lion roar over the speakers?

I don't remember hearing it that much on TV. But then, I spent most of the game banging my head against the wall over the endless flags thrown on Michigan...some of which were for breathing too hard on Penn State players...so I must have missed them.

I grew up in Pennsylvania, have been to State College a dozen times, but yesterday was the my first gameday experience.  My wife and I were wearing maize and blue and _every_ interaction we had with PSU fans was positive.  There was grumbling about some PI calls (wtf, every call should go your way?), but fans will be fans.  I had several Penn State fans tell me to crush Ohio State next week (of course, I was telling them we'd be rooting for them next week).

Ice Cream from the Creamery on campus is delicious, and we met the Glascow brothers' grandparents there!  All in all, a fun trip.

Was not with a group, just my wife (girlfriend at the time) and me. Fans were very hostile back then, worse bring a very large drunk kid who shoved me then called my wife a "Michigan Slut". I felt that the whole experience was very David Bradonesk with TONS of corporate sponsorship and didn't like how the upper levels swayed when they played Sandstorm and started jumping up and down. Seems like they have approved the game day experience since the last time I was there.

I was there as well. Was thinking about doing a write-up but you beat me to it. Agree with everything you said but liked the actual campus more than you did. We parked off of College Ave rather than by the stadium and got out pretty quickly.

We sat on the east side at the 35, about 45 rows up. Surrounded by long-time season ticket holders. All very nice. Gave me a little bit of a hard time in a humorous sort of way. Franklin does not seem to have much support. And they have had it with Hack.

I also didn't realize that it's such s big school. 90k students or so. Also didn't know that it's a relatively highly-ranked school. If my son doesn't get in to Michigan I'd consider it as an option for him (as long as he likes the school).

Just a note, the 95,000 students includes all the branch campuses throughout the state and online-only students as well. Penn State has many more branches than the two Michigan does, and PSU's have much larger populations than our tiny Flint/Dearborn campuses. We also don't have purely online students as they do (they have about 13,000 of them).

Enrollment at the main Penn State in State College is 46,000, just slightly more than the 43,000 or so in Ann Arbor.

Left Toledo at 430 am as my buddy couldn't get off work. Did some major hauling on the turnpike and got to State College around 945. It took us probably 30 minutes to get there from the last 2 miles.

Tailgated in the brown lot, wasn't much going on there. A sub, six pack, and a few pulls of fireball and we headed in.

Like everyone has described it truly does look like an erector set walking around inside the stadium. Excellent seats WE row P which was the 50 yard line. Aside from a few key place it didn't get all that loud. The people around us were nice, and we ended up talking quite a bit between place, Tv timeouts and such. Only true harassment we saw were what appeared to be Michigan fans in the student section just after halftime.

Post game we knew it would be a problem leaving, so we posted up in tailgated for two hours after the game while traffic died down a little. By the time we left they were still a ton of tailgating still going on.

Headed to the hotel in du bois, checked in just after the Buckeyes lost and to our surprised we were the only car there at the best Western. Went to a hole in the wall bar called the hitching post and met some Michigan fans there where we got completely ripped.

Been to Madison plenty of times. Both parents went there and brother goes there now. I root for the Badgers.

Sure, lakes are nice, but flat, farmy south central Wisconsin has nothing on the mountainous and wooded Central PA.

Besides, you posted a picture that looks pretty primarily because of the moon lol.

I've been to PSU UM games at Happy Valley 3 times including the '97 beatdown and I found the fans incredibly nice.   Not sure where the OP heard the fans were hostile.  Everyone that I have ever spoken to has said PSU have the nicest fan base.

Sat in the north end zone with quite a few other Michigan fans, my tickets courtesy of the alumni association. Most of the PSU fans were cool. One of them became irate at the targeting/personal foul call, turned around and screamed at us, "what kind of a pussy league do you play in?" I politely informed him that it is called the Big Ten and that I was aware that they are relatively newcomers, but it is,in fact the very same league they play in! At the end of the game he had settled down and turned around and offered handshakes and seemingly genuine congratulations.

I actually encountered a coed that asked me the what time is it question, and the "and Michigan still sucks"response. Her being young and seemingly somewhat airheaded I stifled my first impulse of replying that Penn State still swallows and merely rolled my eyes!

I agree that the stadium looks like an erector set and the mountain lion howl is lame and tends to get on your last damn nerve pretty quick. And even before  the start of the game I knew only too well who they were: WE ARE PENN STATE. WE ARE PENN STATE. WE ARE PENN STATE. over and over and on and on. I had forgotten about their love of Neil Fricken Diamond's " Sweet Caroline" BA BA BA.

I was parked way out in yellow lot 26, right on the driveway. After hoofing it out to the car, I was out on Highway 322 and gone in ten minutes

My buddy and I stayed in Youngstown, OH Friday night and drove in Saturday morning. We talked with Desmond Morgan's dad (and uncle? not sure) at a McDonalds somewhere in Pennsylvania that morning. Seemed like a cool guy!

The stadium was set up in the middle of farm fields at the far end of campus. We walked through campus all the way down to the Lion Shrine, which was pretty sweet. Got some selfies with the Lion. Most PSU fans were good to us (including a fair amount of people shouting "Welcome!" as we walked by), but there was that one drunk sorority girl that stuck a thumbs-down in my face. Students gonna student.

The campus buildings were mostly architecturally similar. Most were red brick with aluminum accents, but there were some buildings with a tan brick. Campus was pretty nice!

Agree with the stadium: outside and concourse were ugly as hell. Inside its great. The white out was cool for the first quarter before they all got demoralized. "Those fans" exist at Penn State as well...they sat right behind us and constantly complained about Hack not throwing the ball away, or their persistance with trying the run, calling the targeting on Rudock fair game ("LET THEM PLAY FOOTBALL!"), but then yelling about the refs not throwing a flag when Hack got owned by Taco. They left early.

Speaking of leaving early, the avalanche began after we recovered the fumbled punt.

Bars were very crowded, but PSU fans there were great. They praised Jake Rudock and how he destroyed them through the air. Grumbling about Franklin were present, though a few said he needed more time to get his players in.

Overall great trip! Would love to come again. Next year, Iowa.

One of my sons is a PSU graduate and I always enjoyed the trips there.  Concur with almost all of your observations/experiences (except I liked the campus quite a bit).  My son is not happy with Franklin either.  Same with Hackenberg.  He likes the HC at Temple who's a PSU grad and I wouldn't be surprised if he's offered at some time in the near future.  I never had a problem with students/fans when wearing my UofM garb.  In fact, I think they enjoyed being able to engage in some friendly jawing.

The fans behind us were vocally annoyed at the Zettel targeting call, but I assured them it was being reviewed, and no such call in Michigan's favor had been upheld the entire season. We proceeded to have a debate about who was screwed by the refs more, and wound up agreeing that the O'Neill crew had to go. Like Brian on the main page: in hind site I am glad Zettel is playing this week.

The concensus was they used to hate us and don't like Lloyd Carr, but now really hate Ohio State, Urban Meyer's cheating ways, and especially Ohio State fans. In contrast, we apparently treated Penn State fans well last year, though our night games are quiet compared to Happy Valley.

Franklin recieved much criticism, especially with timeout mis-usage in the second half, and there was at least one guy who wanted Hackenburg pulled (sooo last year in Wolverine fan emotions).

It was a good trip, and I would definitely do it again.

My first time to Happy Valley was for the first meeting with PSU in 1993. My wife and I went to meet an old roomie of hers and her fiance, a PSU graduate and son of a PSU prof. We were invited to spend the weekend at the fiance's family home, which was right on campus. It was a very memorable time and the hospitality could not be beat. At the game, the fans were very intelligent, gracious and high-spirited. The game itself was a Tyrone Wheatley track meet, and even the PSU fans were impressed by the show he put on. Afterwards, the bar scene on campus remained hospitable and festive, despite PSU's loss that day.

I would agree with the visual take on Beaver Stadium. The layout on the inside looks like a real Rube Goldberg job. Otherwise, the campus is beautiful - and it's setting deep in the mountains of Central PA is something special. If you happen to head through there when the leaves are changing, it's gorgeous. Here's an embiggable example:

Beaver Stadium from Mt. Nittany

Living in DC, I was looking forward to heading up for the game this year, but it conflicted with taking my daughter to a college recruiting event on Saturday morning. The way the timing working out, I was waiting with my daughter in line to talk with the rep from the Stamps School of Art & Design as the game kicked off, so I felt that was a good omen as I turned off all notices on my phone and went dark until I got home to my DVR!
