Players Redshirting

Submitted by Tim on
Here's the current status of every (scholarship) player on the Michigan roster who has not yet taken a redshirt year. In order to be eligible to redshirt for the 2009 season, a player must have not played in any game past the 5th (Michigan State).

Rich Rodriguez has said that Boubacar Cissoko is expected to return to the field this year once he clears up the issues that got him suspended. That means he won't be redshirting. Only freshmen will redshirt this year, then, and the list of eligible guys is as follows:

  • Isaiah Bell
  • Jeremy Gallon
  • Brendan Gibbons
  • Cameron Gordon
  • Thomas Gordon
  • Mike Jones (Injury redshirt only, as he's played in a couple games - but not the DSU blowout).
  • Anthony LaLota
  • Taylor Lewan
  • Michael Schofield
  • Fitzgerald Toussaint
  • Justin Turner
  • Quinton Washington

A couple of these guys might be in the mix for playing time later in the year (especially Jones, since he's already played), so keep your eyes peeled.

Hopefully the team stays healthy enough that the guys who are currently on track for a redshirt don't have to burn it near the end of the season. Good comprehensive list!

The mgoblue site lists Demens as a RS FR. The fact that Webb, Sagesse, Rogers, and Woolfolk did not redshirt was one of my biggest pet peeves of Carr's later years.

any way that this can get moved to the MGoBoard and made sticky??? reason being is that someone is going to ask in a couple of weeks what the redshirt situation is and it will easier to direct them to this post instead of explaining it to them.

You could make this the front page, rename the blog "The Redshirts of 2009 for Michigan are as follows...(all their names)," email the list to every known poster here, send RSS feeds to everyone who even clicks on this blog, cut off the hands and feet of everyone who posts threads titled,"Who's Gonna Redshirt?" and you would still have 6.4 threads per week titled, "Who's Gonna Redshirt?"

but why does KOB get negged for just about everything he posts (and, yes, I am aware that he formerly posted as the Barking Sphincter)? This seemed like a completely innocuous "jokey" post, so why the hate? Are people just negging certain posters they don't like regardless of post content? That just seems so, I don't know, middle-schooley. (Ducks for cover...)

There are sev. things that should be put semi-permanently under "Useful Stuff." This is one of them. One other suggestion: obviously, this will need to be edited maybe twice, three times at the most. Say at the beginning of Nov. and end of season.

I'm a little surprised at some of the non-redshirting freshman. Obviously, RR must have his reasons and I'm not trying to second guess him, but I'm just curious what those reasons are. Players like Big Will, Hawthorne, Teric Jones, and Stokes have contributed very little, and surely their contributions could have been made by players who were not redshirt eligible. I would just like to know why those players needed to play this year.

Speculation on my part, but I'll bite. Sometimes you've got a player that the coaches believe can contribute and make some good plays in limited action. Perhaps these guys still need work on technique/fundamentals. Being able to go up against other competition and then reviewing film of what was good/bad, can be more beneficial than just redshirting. There's no replacement for game time experience, and perhaps a few of these guys will be big contributors in 2010. Just my $0.02.

FM, wondered why some of these guys didn't RS as well. Couple reasons may be as follows; they played well enough in practices that they appeared ready to make greater contributions than we have seen so far, playing them now will ensure they have a bigger impact next year, the players earned the right to play and were given the option of red shirting but asked to play. Anyone have insight on reality vs. my spectulation?

is that if a skill position guy doesn't see the field his freshman year (ie.db, running back, wr) he probably isn't ever going to be anything special (YES...there are exceptions, but mostly it is the case). Which is why the empire is REALLY concerned about Turner. Ty Law played ALOT as a frosh, Woodson played ALOT as a frosh, Jackson ALOT as a frosh, Warren A LOT as a frosh. So, I think you get my drift...the odds are greater that Turner will be anyting special.

This is a strange case. Because of some weird problem with a meaningless standardized test that's supposed to test Turner's teachers more than Turner, his arrival was delayed until the end of summer. Given his performance in the Army game and his recruiting cachet, I'm not ready to come near to writing him off yet. All of the guys you mentioned above were there for summer practice their respective freshman years.

I'm pretty sure that if a player is on the field for a single play in any game for the entire year they burn their redshirt. Unlike in basketball where there is a limit to the games one can play in, I believe it is one and done with football.

I'm not 100% sure, but I thought I read on a thread here way back at the beginning of the year that Gallon played on special teams a couple times. I could definitely be wrong but I thought I read that on this blog somewhere.
