Paulus? Meh. Or Maybe Good. But The Optics Are TERRIBLE.

So I'm back for another foray into enemy territory. I was pleasantly surprised by the (mostly) respectful reception of my diary on Shavodrick Beaver's de-commitment, so here's another. The just plain craziness of this Paulus business - and the uproar about it that's evident anywhere Michigan fans gather online - seems a propitious occasion for it. DISCLAIMER: I'm a Buckeye fan, but one who tries to hate y'all in a friendly, rational way, if that makes any sense. I'm not here to talk shit. There are lots of reasons for this, but I'll just give you one: I'm old enough that my immersion in the rivalry started about halfway through the 10 Years' War. The worm has turned a few times since then, and if I throw "Five in a row" at any of you, I should expect a "2-10-1" to hit me in the mush. Actually, I'll give you two: this is your place, and it would be bad form for me to come in and piss all over the place. That said, to business. I'll take the three things from the title in order. MEH: So what? There's no question that depth at the position is a concern for Michigan right now, so ANY viable option at all that can be added - especially one that burns only one year of a scholarship in a year when a scholarship is available - is a good option. As long as you're not looking to him to save your team's season, you'd be crazy NOT to take him. OR MAYBE GOOD: This gets back a little bit to a few of the points I made in the Beaver diary - it's entirely possible that Paulus will be able to compete with, and maybe even beat out, everybody else for the starting job this fall, because nobody has any GOOD reason right now to think that Forcier or Robinson (or Paulus, for that matter) will be able to lead your offense to success this Fall. All anybody KNOWS right now is that Sheridan = DEATH. This should be obvious to everybody no matter WHAT Forcier looked like last Saturday, given the no-QB-contact, injury-depleted-and-unsettled-personnel-on-defense nature of Spring football. Paulus was an extremely highly ranked QB prospect four years ago, and it just might be that four years of life and high-level athletic competition may have better equipped him for success than a kid eight months removed from high school. Even if that's not the case, worries about "Calista" (sorry - had to get at least one dig in) Forcier's current physical ability to survive D-1 football for a full season are seemingly well-founded, and there really cannot be any question that Paulus, sight-unseen on a college football field, would be a better backup option than DEATH (again, it must be emphasized that nothing at all can be KNOWN about Robinson's ability to succeed as Michigan's QB at this point, so he really can't be a part of anyone's calculations on this point, other than as another warm body). And if Forcier gets hurt and Robinson isn't up to the job as a freshman, then maybe Paulus CAN save your season in a way that DEATH or Cone cannot - it seems pretty clear at this point that winning the games y'all "should" win this Fall is going to depend on offensive competence, since it doesn't look like your defense is going to be all that great. So Paulus in Maize and Blue is maybe a very good thing. BUT THE OPTICS ARE TERRIBLE: There's a lot of psychoanalyzing of Forcier's comments on this situation that I won't address or engage in, but it seems clear that he was pretty much blindsided by the whole thing, and that does not at all speak well of the coaching staff's handling of this. They had to know that some d-bag reporter would buttonhole and badger Tate as soon as the story got out and should have coached the kid up on what to say. I suppose it's possible that they did just that and Tate fucked it up, but it doesn't read that way. The concerns some of you have about the "Those Who Stay..." believers on the team resenting this kind of stuff are probably at least half right, and if I'm even half right about that then that's a problem. The last thing to say about this is that you don't have to be a Wolverine-hater to see that (even considering the meh/maybe good points I made above) this foofaraw only strengthens the perception that Michigan is a program so desperate and so much in disarray right now, that they're willing to take a QB that FUCKING DUKE's coach refused to even consider. Note that I'm not saying that this perception is correct - in fact, I think that it is not - but that it is real nonetheless. This cannot be a good thing - perception matters in big-time college football. As a Buckeye fan, I ought to know. In the end, I think that this business is likely to be an energy-sapping distraction right on through the preseason (assuming Paulus does in fact join the team, and to a lesser but still significant degree even if he doesn't), and possibly on into the season. The silver lining, of course, is that if any of the meh/maybe good points I made above are true, then it won't matter once the real games start. I guess you're all gonna need a high tolerance for drama.

The buckeye nation that is. This is waaaaay too logical for someone from down there. This is a better take than my earlier diary entry. Pretty much sums up what I was trying to say but only better. I am not saying you are smarter, just a better conveyer of that train of thought. "I guess you're all gonna need a high tolerance for drama." My thoughts exactly. The negatives of this outweigh the positives.

...there's tens of thousands of us being unleashed on the world every year. We can't all be as smart as me :) Not to be a dick about it, but there's plenty of stupidity on your side as well. I just try my best not to hold it against the rest of you. It helps that I grew up mostly in the Toledo-area battleground around lots of decent people whose only flaw was that they chose the Dark Side ;)

sports buddies are Buckeye fans because they are intelligent and witty, thus making the rivalry intellectually stimulating as well. While on the other hand some of my least favorite people to watch any Michigan event with are so rabid as Michigan fans that logic leaves the room crying the second they open their mouthes. Rivalries are enjoyed the most when intelligence is allowed to stay on top of bloodlust.

That is cold my friend (and by friend I mean hated rival) but funny. I concur with your first 2 assessments. The third with Tate, was a little off I feel. I think Tate is just showing some of his immaturity, and the great thing about kids that age is they feel that way desperately today, and could care less tomorrow. I don't think it is near as big of thing as it was made out, especially because his brother was doing interviews the day before, "inviting all newcomers." I think what we saw is that a Forcier 4 years older with 4 years college experience is a lot more mature then a "still should be in highschool," lindsay lohan lookalike (get up with the times, I had to wikipedia to figure out what 90's skinny girl you were talking about), Freshman Forcier. He'll be fine he is just young and emotional, and Michigan is a storied program that won't be made or broken by one player, one season, or one coach.

I actually agree with your assessment and the whole negative perception thing has already happened for those who watched around the horn. Everyone on that show took turns hating on michigan when asked about paulus. Woody Paige was the only one who "bought" the idea of paulus coming on and even he took a shot at rod before he made his argument.

With this negative hoopla, I hope that perception and reality are not in line. This what I was also getting at when I commented on Route66's piece. I was particularly pointing out that the fans' perception is likely different from the teams reality. However, its not encouraging to see team members joining ridiculous facebook groups. Unfortunately, perception can be just as damaging (e.g., stock market, politics, and cults).

IS reality. Having been on a college team, the dynamics are vast. The teams reality is usually a lot more magnified than that of the publics knowledge. ie- If the Otter is on a FB group that means this is not sitting well with the team. Freshman or not. Whether you are on a team at work or in church, you know there are dynamics and it seems RR does not care too much about the implications of those.(from what we have seen or heard over the last 1.5 years from him) I love RR and what he brings to the program, minus this and other drama. His upside is too great to let something like this ruin my confidence. You would think he would keep some of this stuff closer to the vest though. It is too bad that we all love this program so much. We waste a lot of time debating dumb subjects online that we really know few details about. But dang is it addicting.

I was wrong about him. He is sweet, awkward, doofy, and shy. He was nervous to be on TV. That surprised me and almost made me like him. I don't think he would be a prima donna if he came. But I still hope he does not. I just see him as too much of a wild card to help in a support role. The ideal backup QB is not a guy with a rock-bottom floor and a high ceiling. It's a guy who is solid, knows what to do, can be counted on for a B-. I may have maize-colored glasses but that's Sheridan to me. (assuming a year helps him) Everyone has different estimations, but it comes down to these choices: A] Forcier -> Sheridan -> Cone (Denard wildcard) B] T. Forcier -> Sheridan/J. Forcier -> Cone (DWC) C] T. Forcier -> Sheridan/Paulus -> Cone (DWC) I am starting to be persuaded that an injury could make choice [A] a painful existence. In a perfect world I like B. I would live with C. I just hope it doesn't make Linda Cohn talk about us in a mini-skirt ever again.

Just saying, but the only reason he would not play QB at Dook is that they have Thaddeus Young who will be a 4th year starter next fall at QB, Dook's best player. Paulus would ride the pine in Cutcliffe's pro offense for one year and have no shot in the NFL. Dook wants him but cannot take him as a QB, they want him as a slot, which he obviously does not want.

let's face it- after last year's 3-9, questioning anything and everything R2 does makes for easy writing for MSM & other outlets. ask yourselves this- w/ only 2 scholarship QBs in spring practice, what would Sweaterboy had done if Paulus had shown up in Columbus Tuesday (instead of A2)? would he have said "no, you can't try to walk on here"? would he have said "you can walk on, but no matter how well you practice you'll never start because TP's the starter (no matter how poorly he might play)"? no, not likely. he'd have likely said what R2 appears to have said: you're welcome to give it a try & we'll see what happens. that's probably what 9/10 coaches would do. but there wouldn't have been near the press coverage at most other programs, because most other programs don't have a new coach coming off the program's worst season in history. it's news here. it wouldn't be somewhere else. R2 has made it clear all spring that the starting QB job is going to be open to all comers until August. Tater has to compete w/ Denard and Sheridan. and anybody else who steps up this summer. none of that is news or new.

word. Just when I was starting to doubt this being a good idea, thank you. RR has always said that all positions are open and they are to be competed for at all times. Why change that now and tell Paulus he has no chance. Let's have a competition. I do not think it is likely he wins it but let's get bodies in there w/ some talent and raise the level of competition in practice and we will all be better for it. This is a perfect recipe for Sparty and Brutus to rain more hate on us but who cares? Let's worry about us and our situation and that situation happens to be thin at QB depth and experience. I do not think RR is handing out empty promises of PT and NFL stardom, just saying, "Hey, if you can jump through the right hoops and get here and be eligible we will see what you can do and as far as I am concerned all spots are open to be won come fall." Go Blue!

...just, wow. How do you know - besieged as you are in Columbus - what RR "appears to have said" to Paulus (and Forcier, for that matter)? Is it on his Twitter? Isn't the whole point here that since there's a scholarship available, Paulus wouldn't be "try(ing) to walk on", but be given a scholarship for this one year because Michigan's QB situation is far from ideal? Can any non-insane parallel be drawn between Michigan's and Ohio State's situation @ QB (other than the # of "scholarship QBs in Spring practice")? Sorry to go off for a second there, but you're missing the point - it's not just that Michigan's coming off the 3-9, or that people just get off on questioning RR - what makes this Paulus thing newsworthy and interesting is that it MAKES IT LOOK LIKE RR IS DESPERATE TO FIND A QB, ANY QB AT ALL, EVEN ONE THAT HASN'T PLAYED FOOTBALL FOR FOUR YEARS BECAUSE HE KNOWS HE DOESN'T HAVE ONE RIGHT NOW AND HE'S EFFED W/OUT ONE. If you read my diary, you'll see that I don't necessarily agree that that's the case, but that doesn't matter - whatever the truth of this is, which is something neither I, nor you, nor almost anybody else (certainly nobody here) knows, the fact remains that the optics of all this are TERRIBLE. There's no getting around that. I know it's probably unfair, but oh well. Wish for good sports media in one hand and shit in the other and see which gets filled up first.

Sorry, but what is R2 supposed to do? Start coaching, and making coaching decisions, based on what would look good in the press? Not likely. What would any coach likely have done when Paulus showed up and asked about coming here and trying to play? I think most would have told him he was welcome to try and walk on (R2 has not offered Paulus a scholarship. http://www.detnews.com/article/20090417/SPORTS0201/904170397/1004/SPORTS.) R2 didn’t recruit this kid. He came to us looking for an opportunity. What was R2 supposed to say? Say no, you can't try to walk on? And why would he do that? Because Adam Rittenberg might question his logic? And what if R2 had done that- told Paulus “no, we don’t want no more QBs”? Does anyone really think the press wouldn’t have hopped on that instead? Wouldn't the talk/MSM criticism have then been- "R2 declares QB position filled"? We'd have just had to listen to stories about how we might have missed out on the next Chris Weinke. And as far as comparing QB roster depth, Brian has written about tosu’s lack of QB’s himself: http://ncaafootball.fanhouse.com/2009/01/29/ohio-state-really-really-wa… I don’t think it’s all that insane of a comparison.

I find something incredibly unsettling about a thoughtful, reasoned post such as this coming from Columbus. Part of that I guess is you pretty much stand in utter contrast to anything we've ever seen, heard, felt, or been told about Buckeye fans. For example, you can write in complete sentences. Are there other intelligent creatures like yourself in the Down-There State, or are you, like, some super ancient Buckeye who was frozen for 1,000 years while the rest of Ohio was populated by the children of Kirk Herbstreit? Thanks for your post. When it comes time for the inevitable eradication of your state, you and Buck-I-Guy* can live. *What? the dude's funny, okay? Stop waving that cowbell at me Superfan.
