Opposition Research- Notre Dame

Submitted by swarwick33 on
Opposition research is a term that is usually reserved for the world of politics.  It is a very complex process that boils down to gathering all of the available information on a person who is running for office, and using it to find a way to defeat them.  When Michigan plays Notre Dame though, it is bigger than just a political race, especially this year.

After last week's win over WMU, Michigan has garnered some early respect from various locations.  2 of the 4 "experts" for Yahoo! pick Michigan to beat ND this weekend.  Pat Forde graded Michigan's effort by the two-headed monster of Forcier and Robinson an "A" saying, "They produced 197 passing yards (three TDs by Forcier) and 111 rushing yards (one TD run of 43 yards by Robinson), combining to create the statistical body of work Pat White used to turn in by himself."  Which brings me to this; after a convincing win Michigan has created some expectations for themselves.  I know that I have them, I know that some "experts" have them, and I know that some of you have them now that we have seen the product on the field.  In 1969 Bo beat OSU in what would become his "Michigan Moment."  ND is not OSU, but I know I hate them, and after all that has gone on the past two weeks this weekend could be Rich Rod's "Michgan Moment."  With that being said, here is some "fan opposition research" to prepare you for this weekends game.

Notre Dame Vital Stats

  • Coaches- HC- Charlie Weis, DC- Jon Tunuta and Corwin Brown (Tunuta calls the plays starting this year), OC- Weiss calls the play, his assistant offensive coach is Ron Ianello
  • Record (Last 4 yrs. under Weis)

    • 2008: 7-6 (4-2 H, 2-4 A) vs Mich (both not ranked) won 35-17
    • Total: 29-21 (15-11 H, 12-8 A) 2-2 vs Mich
    • 14-2 vs. Army, Navy, Air Force, Stanford, Syracuse, Washington, Duke, San Diego St.
  • ND vs. Michigan Facts
    • There have been 5 up-sets in the last 7 games
    • ND is 3-9 in road openers since 1997
    • Home team is 8-2 in the last 10
    • Last 3 have been decided by 27 ppg (Mich 2-1 in those games)
    • 185 combined pts. scored since Weis took over as coach
Last Year's Game

We all know what happened in last year's game.  Michigan turned the ball over 6 times, and trailed 21-0 just over 10 minutes into the game.  This led to a final score of 35-17 on a nasty, rainy day that would only be rivaled by the Northwestern game as the worst playing conditions of last year.  Now we all agree it was nasty, but lets break it down a little and look for some positives.  After the first 10 mins., Michigan out scored ND 17-14 the rest of the way.  Michigan out gained ND on the ground 159-113 (3.8 to 3.3 ypc), and in the air 229-147.  The more telling stat though is the completion percentage, Michigan was 19 of 28 (68%) ND was 10 of 21 (48%).  This was the second best passing day of the year for Michigan, and one of the best for the OL as ND did not register a sack against Michigan.  Michigan also held the edge in first downs 21-14, which was the highest Michigan had all year as they only had at least 20 first downs only twice last year (the other time was Minnesota, which they won 29-6).  So while we can all agree that the ND game was a complete nightmare to watch, it can be said that there are some positives to take from the game.

Notre Dame vs. Nevada

People all week have been talking about how great the Notre Dame win was against Nevada, because they shut down such a prolific offense, while scoring 35.  First of all Nevada, playing out of the run and shoot WAC, are not known for shutting down the opposition.  They have given up under 20 pts only 6 times in there last 26 games.  Now I understand that they did drop 35 pts on them, but it may have been more lucky than good.  Clausen connected on 4 TD passes, but the shortest was from 19 yds out.  The others were 24, 70, and 88.  All of these to Michael Floyd (which begs the question how do you not cover this guy.)  These TDs combine for 201 of the 500 total yards of offense ND had.  Also, lets look at the situations for these TDs.  The first 19 yd TD came on a 3rd&16.  The 24 yd TD came on 3rd&9.  Then the other 2 of 70 and 88 were bombs from the beginning of the drive.  What I am trying to illustrate here, is that ND had only one TD from in the Red Zone.  I know you have to execute on the field, but if Nevada executes two 3rd and long stops, or decides to cover Floyd on the go route, then ND does not score a TD, or maybe any points, on 4 of their 5 scoring drives.  Michigan's secondary is vulnerable, but I feel confident that they are better than Nevada's.

Now for the fact that ND shutout the prolific offense of Nevada.  The mistake here is that Nevada moved the football against ND.  First Nevada missed a 38 yd FG on their first drive after driving 52 yds on 8 plays.  Then while trailing 21-0 in the 2nd quarter, Nevada failed to convert on a 4th and 1 from the ND 19.  This was their 2nd to the Red Zone in 4 possession.  On their next possession Nevada took the ball down the the ND 35, before the half ended.  In the 3rd Q, Nevada moved the ball down to the ND 5 before fumbling and turning it over.  The 4th Q was basically run out by 2 ND possessions.  For the day Nevada was 0 for 3 in the Red Zone with a missed FG, TO on downs, and a fumble.  Again, I know Nevada has a great offense, but this is crazy.  If they make a FG, convert a 4th and 1, and don't fumble on the 5 then they put up some points.

I am in no way calling this victory tainted by these stats, but I think that if you were to look deeper, like we did here, it shows that there are some positives going into this weeks game.

I know that ND is ranked now, and I know that all Michigan did last week was beat WMU.  However, finding the holes in the opponent that you are playing, and making yourself believe that your team can win is what "fan opposition research" is all about.

By the way after this research I do believe Michigan will win this week, and that it will be Rich Rod's "Michigan Moment."

There's definitely a story behind the stats. Thanks for digging it up and adding some analysis. I think that ND is overrated (as always) and is in for a rude awakening.

I'm glad everyone is pumping up Notre Dame and bragging on them. I think they will come into the game overconfident. That will only play to our advantage.

Talk shit about Michigan and about how RR would get fired in 2 years and how he "broke every NCAA rule". I HATE dealing with morons

I agree with your analysis, ND's victory is getting overblown. But couldn't you say the same about Michigan? I mean, DRob's TD, while thrilling, was an accident. It was supposed to be a reverse. Also, Michigan didn't score in the second half. And I know that there are things that can explain this, such as Sheridan coming in in the red zone and Coner coming in on the other red zone visit, but still, they didn't score. Furthermore, Michigan was fortunate on a few plays IMO. Hiller's fluky pick to Moutan, his strange inability to hit some wide open guys on short passes, and so on. Not to mention the deep TD which you know ND and those receivers are better at than WMU. Now, don't get me wrong, I thought Michigan deserved to win, was the better team by far, and that game gave me great hope that this year will be better. At the same time, there were some holes that were covered up similar to the ND v. Nevada game.

...because it holds so much promise. Think about it, if we beat ND in what I think is certain to be a close game, then anything becomes possible THIS season. If Tate is able to lead our team under real pressure (which he or Denard hasn't had yet) and our defense shows it can contain a potent offense, then competing for the Big 10 titles and a 9-3 or 10-2 season that seemed like crazy optimism from fringe slappies may actually be achievable. Of coure, nothing is assured, and while I agree with most that ND may be a bit overrated, I've prepared myself to lose this game. Michigan has shown itself to be better than expected so far, but those are still two 18 year old kids behind center out there. We just don't know how they will respond under pressure. Myself, I'm just going to show up to my seats in Section 39 and give the team the support it deserves, win or lose. Go Blue!

1) after their win, Charlie talked about how his offense was working like "clockwork" (shades of 2005 "just a college defense") 2) at Blue and gold illustrated, under "sept 8th practice notes" Corwin Brown is caught saying "somebody is going down this week. Coach Corwin Brown, a michigan alum, said in reference to michigan at tuesdays practice" 3) Darrin Walls, their Cb, was heard to say "history" with regards to Michigan! #2 most certainly will end up on the Michigan bulletin board

Well researched and informative post... Thanks. I'm feeling pretty good about this game but we have to be careful not to expect too much from the freshmen. Underclassmen, if anything, can be inconsistent. It'll be the staff's job to safeguard against that. I agree with the OP and others that the potential, in terms of expectations and public image, is huge for this game. If our boys come out as hungry/motivated and yet focused as last week, it'll be our day.

In regards to Floyd's 3 TDs, The first is a great pass that catches right at the goal line with the defender hanging off his leg. The second is quick pass while he is behind the line a scrimmage, which he scores with the aid of a great block by Tate. 70YAC The third is a 40 yard pass he has to slow up to catch, goes above the corner to pull it down and then runs the remaining 50 yards to the goal line. 50YAC Even if those 3 passes had all fallen incomplete, or he had been tackled at the catch, there was nothing inside Nevada's defensive secondary which would have made me think we wouldn't finish the drive in the endzone. In regards to the coaching staff there is no one listed as the "offensive coordinator", (Brown, Associate head coach, Ianello and Tenuta are all assistant head coaches) Weis - Head Coach Brown - Co-defensive coordinator/defensive backs Ianello - Wide Receivers Tenuta - Co-defensive coordinator/linebackers Alford - Running Backs Hart - Defensive line Parmalee - Tight Ends Polian - Special Teams Powlus - Quarterbacks Verducci - Offensive line

I did not think that there was an OC, but Ianello is listed as both the recruiting/offense coordinator asst. HC and WR Coach. I thought I put him as the OC, because he is the number one Offensive coach besides Weis. He is the guy working with them every week and recruiting them.

I really liked this post and agree that much is being made about ND beating a very average Nevada team. UM similarly beat a very average WMU team, but it was UM that had so many question marks before the season began. ND was, at least by their fan base, considered a shoe-in for a BCS bowl game this year. If we can win this game it definitely bodes well for the remainder of our season. It could be the start of something very special in A2 and would further explain why all the RR haters emerged after he was hired (they are scared of what he can do). I would love to see UM take this one!

I think a big part of ND's problems the past years is Clausen. I don't think he is living up to his hype coming from high school. He still makes poor decisions and inaccurate passes. The ball he through to floyd for one of the long touchdowns was terribly underthrown and it took a stud wideout to go grab it. With that being said, this ND team is a little scary because of the depth and skill they have at wideout. We had problems with Golden Tate last year and I think that Floyd is one of the NCAA's best. IMO, we need to keep our DBs back and make them punch away slowly at our defense. Maybe Clausen will make a mistake, or our defense will come up big on a 3rd down. The big play will kill us if we get too aggresive.

I think he could have thrown that ball 52 yards and Floyd would have chased it down and then walked on his hands into the endzone. Seriously... he's going to look good cause he has studs to throw it to, but it's still the same guy who had a 25/17 td/int ratio last year and had 11/0 ratio in 3 games against purdue, stanford and hawaii. Against good teams he was mediocre to bad. See: michigan state, boston college, north carolina, usc

GERG throw the kitchen sink at JIMMAH with our CBs playing aggressive man with safety help over top. Things will be thrown if we sit back in a loose zone letting whatever team we are playing on the day have 5-10 yards a pop. See Purdue last year. DAMN YOU DEATH BY SINGLE NEEDLE PRICKS!

Make no mistake, this is going to be a good game no matter what. I love how our defense is playing this year, and our offense, especially our running game, looks extremely promising. But as Michigan fans, we shouldn't get too overconfident or cocky about this game. Notre Dame is in fact a very good team this year and Floyd is an exceptional receiver that can make up for Clausen's deficiencies. I'm not saying that they're the better team, that will be decided this Saturday, but neither are they visibly worse than us. I'm excited and can only hope that this is a very bad game this weekend, in that I'm sitting back yawning in the 3rd quarter with a comfortable 31 point Michigan lead.

just went and read their practice notes. but what really caught my eye was the writer's comments. "if nevada and WMU squared off in a consolation game of sorts nevada would win hands down" good and cocky those irish are. the writer also stated that although many are predicting a close game around 1 point he stands by his assertion that ND wins by 2 td's. I LOVE IT!!! i have a funny feeling they're in for a rude awakening.

Guy named Irish, mildly talking some under-the-radar smack (see "42 and a half yards" and "not to mention the game") on a Michigan blog racks up 895 MgoPoints??

if Michigan loses this game. ND has a 5* third year starter at QB and some stud receivers - not to mention they just shut out a team with a high powered offense.....but somehow they just seem like a paper tiger don't they? Add to that, home field advantage and our freshman QBs that have NO CLUE that they aren't expected to play as well as they did last week. Michigan may lose this one but I like our chances now and love them in the years to come.
