Nebraska fans: Who you'll hate in the Big 10 and why.

A few weeks ago, a link was posted about Nebraska fans speculating who their biggest rivals in the Big 10 will be.

Here is the answer to that question, from the Big 10 insider's perspective:

Ohio State:

You will instantly hate Ohio State.  Everyone always does.  You will find their fans ignorant, crass, and crude.  You will wonder why there are not jail cells in Ohio Stadium like there are in the Pros.  Of all of the Big 10 schools, Ohio State will remind you the most of a Big 12 South school.

Michigan:

You will find Michigan fans arrogant with a sense of entitlement, but for no justifiable reason.  They will be knowledgeable and friendly when you visit their house, but they will talk about you behind your back.  You will get so sick of hearing about the split 1997 National Championship that you will gladly give them the crystal trophy from your half of the title, just to shut them up.  Of all of the Big 10 teams, Michigan fans will treat you like a guest in "their" conference the longest.

Penn State:

Penn State will be assigned to you as one of your designated rivals.  You will not be asked your opinion about this.  It will be for the Big 10's convenience, not yours.  You will try to play along, but you won't actually hate Penn State.  You will find their constant whining about the refs, the scheduling, the weather, the whatever, to be pathetic.  You'll pity them more than hate them.

Michigan State:

You will not hate Michigan State at first.  Until they finally beat you.  Then you will hate Michigan State.  That one win is all you'll hear about until your ears bleed.  It won't matter if you beat them the next 9 years in a row, that one win is all you'll hear about.  Nobody gets more mileage out of one win per decade than Michigan State.

Iowa:

You will feel compelled to hate Iowa because of proximity.  The rivalry will be intense and passionate, but as long as you win your fair share, it will never quite digress into true pure hatred.  You will be a little disappointed by this.

Wisconsin:

This will be your biggest rival.  When you look in the mirror, you will see Wisconsin.  Everything you like about yourself you will see in Wisconsin.  Everything you don't like about yourself you will see in Wisconsin.  You both currently occupy the position of kings of honest, in-your-face, power football.  The Big 10 town won't be big enough for the both of you.

Illinois:

Illinois will annoy the hell out of you.  They will show up once a year and declare themselves your biggest rival, even though you'll have no recollection of actually losing to them.  After your game with them, you will completely forget all about them until next year when they will remind you again.

Minnesota:

You will dread playing Minnesota.  Not because of the hatred of a bitter rivalry, but because there is just nothing to gain.  If you win, it was what you were supposed to do.  If you lose, it will always be in the back of your mind:  We just lost to Minnesota.  Is this the inflection point of a lousy season?  Ask Penn State about this.

Northwestern:

You will admire and respect Northwestern for how, against the odds of being a small private academic school, they still field some competitive winning teams.  You will show your admiration and respect by beating the crap out of them.

Indiana and Purdue:

You won't care at all about Indiana and Purdue.  You will feel bad about this.  But you still won't care.

Whoa

1) I will talk to the Nebraska fans to their face

2) Rarely do I ever hear an M fan talk about the split title. Everyone else seems to bring that up.

Well of course not.

We only talk about the championship we won outright in 1997.

we'll talk more

I think we'll be talking about it a lot more when we're going against Nebraska every year.  It's one of the only points of conflict we currently have, and it would be a big one even if we had a richer history with them.

what's to talk about though?

Michigan won the National Title; Tom Osborne's Nebraska won a phyrric victory in getting the coaches vote in a victory lap.

What is a Nebraska fan going to say?

Now that is some serious truth.

I hate Purdue because that

I hate Purdue because that asinine "Boiler UP!" chant they do CONSTANTLY, their stupid Heisman campaigns for players that have no chance, and Chris Kramer.  Oh, and that they beat us in '08 with trick plays, and that they all think it's RR fault that their offensive lineman got suspended.  And West Lafayette sucks it. That is all.

Why is it, that when I imagine a group photo of

Purdue Boilermaker, Nebraska Cornhusker, and Chief Illiniwek all together, this is the image that I come up with?

Honestly, it doesn't get any better when you throw in Bucky Badger, Brutus Buckeye and Goldy Gopher.  It just makes me picture some kind of an ecstasy-fueled night at Studio 54, with teletubbies.

Purdue

There was a trivia question Musberger read several years back.  "Before they were the Boilermakers, what was the name of the Purdue team?"

A. The Hayseeds

B. The Pumpkin Shuckers

C. The Cornfield Sailors

The answer: All of the above.

I think we were undefeated against all three of them.

as an engineer, i have a real soft spot for purdue. theyre mostly harmless too, so theyve become my second favorite team to root for (how can you not pull for the underdog?). i have to say their victory over osu last year was the second best win to the ND game

Yes, I couldn't disagree with much

Someone who knows how it works in the Conference.  The only thing that I'll echo from above (and maybe proven by it being in this article) is that Michigan people think we won the National Championship.  Not half. (Because no trophy says "co-" on it, and we were given more trophies than anyone else that year).  Invariably, any interaction with Nebraska fans always has them bringing up '97, in the "you don't really think you could have beaten us that year" mode, because they're so insecure about how many people said the flip-flop was wrong, unfair, and against precedent.

Are you just saying those things about Nebraska and Wiscnsin because they have the same uniforms and you want to throw them off?  I like your thinking.

The Michigan State, Illinois and Minnesota write ups are the best. But they all are pretty true and funny haha.

* Sigh *

I remembering watching this play on someone's hand held portable TV, jammed in a crowd of about 50 Michigan fans, at Beaver stadium after we had just annihilated Penn State.

Unbelievable.  We were ranked #1 the next day anyway.

Neb v Missou

I had been hoping Missouri would win, and they had the game in hand several times, but when this play happened I thought "Oh no! I hope this doesn't cost us the National Championship!"

After Nebraska beat Tennessee, ESPN went on and on about what a great guy Tom Osborne is. They talked about the fact he was so classy and cared so little about the coaches poll, that he wasn't even coming out on TV to campaign for it. I always suspected the reason Osborn was incognito after the game was because he was probably on the horn twisting arms and calling in markers. Not care? Osborne?

If Osborne didn't campaign for it, it was because Scott Frost wouldn't give up the CBS microphone.

Absolutely hilarious.

The debates were fast and furious at the time.

I posted the following right after the '97 split vote:

Top Ten Reasons Why Michigan is the Real National Champion:

# 10: Michigan 27 Colorado 3, Michigan dominates.  Nebraska 27 Colorado 24, Nebraska taken to the wire, almost loses.

# 9: Michigan 38 Baylor 3, Michigan denies Baylor the end-zone.  Nebraska 49 Baylor 21, Nebraska gives up three touchdowns.

# 8: The Big Ten finished 7 - 0, that's right, 7 - 0 against the Big Twelve, including bowl games.

# 7: Michigan's opposition had a strong winning record, Nebraska's opposition barely finished above .500.

# 6: Akron? Central Florida? Are you kidding?? Weren't these recently 1-AA programs?

# 5: Washington State and Leaf were contenders, Tennessee and Manning were pretenders.

# 4: Nebraska's big win was Washington, Washington was thumped by Washington State.  Guess who beat Washington State?

# 3: There is no overtime asterisk on Michigan's 12 - 0 record.

# 2: The Missouri "Miracle" was an illegal play. Just because the Ref's didn't call it doesn't mean we can't.  Nebraska is a de-facto 12 - 1.

# 1: Bo just re-announced his retirement, in case the voters missed it the first time.

Excellent analysis

However, I feel that Iowa will end up as Nebraska's most hated rival.  Corn can breed some serious rage.  We're talking corn-fed against corn-fed.

Biggest Rival == Iowa

A buddy of mine currently goes to Iowa. He is already talking about things heating up, as there are a lot of big red N flags that fly in that state. Wisconsin will probably be #2.

A few huskers I know

did not care for IA well before NE ended up in the big 10.  My guess would be IA.!  If Osborne did not announce his retirement UM would have finished number 1 in the coaches poll as well, for sure!!!

Might Nebraska be something like....?

Nebraska:

You will find Nebraska fans arrogant with a sense of entitlement, but for no justifiable reason.  They will be knowledgeable and friendly when you visit their house, but they will talk about you behind your back.  You will get so sick of hearing about the split 1997 National Championship that you will gladly give them the crystal trophy from your half of the title, just to shut them up.  Nebraska fans will treat you like a guest in "their" conference even though they're the newest member........

From what I hear, Nebraska fans are pretty arrogant themselves.

Example

you're example

On Nebraska:

you're example article, could at best be like asking a diehard OSU fan their opinion of Michigan fandom.

Kansas State is one of Nebraska's biggest, if not biggest rival. We are  talking of cars being defaced, tires slashed. If you are alone, prepare for a physical conflict with a Kansas State fan or mob. This is their version of OSU, minus the victories.

Ask any cornhusker fan that is a native of the state. Trust me, i'm married to one. While they are as proud as most of storied programs, they are not as bad as the article makes them out to be. Every fandom has it "crazy fans".

Here's one Cornhusker fan that is a native of the state...

...and I can unequivocally say that I've never thought of Kansas State as a rival in anything. Ever.

not from what i have heard and read.

With an ID of a2husker, How long ago did you live in the state? I guess i made it too general of a statement. Should of said "Most" Native Nebraskan's.You may phrase it that way out of arrogance, but these sites point towards a rivalry.

 6) Nebraska-Kansas State, 89 games, .826 K-State is also seriously owned by old Big Two, Little Six rival Oklahoma. With the Huskers dominating the Jayhawks, too, it's not unfair to say that the state of Nebraska should just move their entire border 200 miles south...

http://www.fanblogs.com/ncaa/007635.php

this is a list of most lopsided rivalries per one sports blog.

Kansas State vs. Nebraska

Kansas State had lost 29 consecutive games to Nebraska until November 14, 1998 when #1 Kansas State beat #11 Nebraska 40–30, for the first time in Manhattan since 1959. The Wildcats would then beat Nebraska in 2000, 2002, 2003, and 2004. The Wildcats and Cornhuskers consistently competed for the Big 12 north championship in the late 1990s and early 2000s. The Wildcats beat Nebraska in 2003 in Lincoln for the first time since 1968. The Wildcats lost in Lincoln in 2005 and 2007. Kansas State has not beat Nebraska since 2004.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

All-time, Nebraska leads the series 76–15–2.

I guess I need to give my credentials

Born in Nebraska, lived there about 22 years. Graduated from UNL. Been going to games since 1980, including during the last 13 or so years that I've lived in southeast Michigan. Listen to games against I-AA teams on the internet radio feed. I'm a fan.

Based on the quotes you've pulled out, I don't think you're using the word "rivalry" in a way that applies here. NU and KSU have a long series, granted, but I don't think there's anything about it that makes it a rivalry. Do we get mad when KSU beats us? Yep, because at least until recently, that didn't happen very often. Do we circle that date on next year's calendar? Nope. That's reserved for Oklahoma, Texas, and (grudgingly) Colorado.

Look at it this way: I think about Kansas St. in much the same way that a Michigan fan thinks about Illinois.

fair enough

You make some good points, i guess i was going off what i had experienced the few times i have been to Lincoln, and my In-laws. I talked to quite a few "Husker" fans that have talked about how trashy Manhattan is and the low class fans that attend the games. Not being a native of the state, i had to trust the wife and her family. I guess a rivalry is in the eye of the beholder. I look forward to the 2011 season.

KState

I can't speak to the rivalry that may or may not exist b/w KState and Nebraska, but I can comment on the low-class fans.

I went to the season opener at KState last year, with another UM alum (proudly sporting maize and blue, of course).  We were heckled SO badly, and not even with anything witty or on point.  Just general "Michigan sucks!" shenanigans and much more physically in-your-face than usual heckling.  I think things may have been thrown at us as well.

It was weird.

Penn State and Nebraska have a little history

In the late seventies and early eighties, they played a series of mostly close games, including a couple where one team or the other had national title aspirations. Penn State won the 1982 national title, including a 27-24 game against 12-1 Nebraska. The next year Nebraska crushed Penn State 44-6 during another 12-1 season (when they lost 31-30 to Miami in the Orange).

I believe PSU fans are still

I believe PSU fans are still a little miffed about 1994's undefeated team finishing second to the Huskers in both polls, as well.

Agreed

Between 1982 and 1994, both sides have a long-festering wound of the you-cost-us-a-national-title variety. I mean, I'm still upset about a damn blown call from 28 years ago - that's why there's a good chance that an NU/PSU rivalry might develop more easily than between NU and some of the other likely suspects.
