Michigan Hockey: The Journey

As we get ready to faceoff against Cornell Friday, we get closer to the end of the chapter that is Michigan Hockey 2012. As careers end, legacies are forged and regrets are left on the ice. Players drift away and are forgotten, but long after their mark has faded from Yost Ice Arena the brotherhood shared can never be erased. Old men will tell stories to their grandchildren of how they skated with true Michigan men, telling of triumphs and sacrifice given to achieve greatness.

The past has been written on the ice of Yost Ice Arena, legends have come and gone while others remain etched onto the white banners above above us. New players will arrive to start the next chapter, hearing their names called down from the stands while writing history for themselves. Starry eyed freshman will look up at the older players and dream of becoming the next champions to wear the Maize and Blue, hoping they can continue the Michigan legacy.

For some the journey does not end here, as they will take their skills beyond the college game to the next level. For others it's time to say goodbye to everything we have ever known, every minute of our lives have been given to the game we love but the unknown quickly approaches. Our memories take us back to a time when the rink was a foreign place known only by our heroes as we watched on TV, while our fathers watched from the stands dreaming of the day when we would share the ice with the NHL greats. From the time we could skate to the moment when the horn sounds one final time, every drop of sweat and blood has been given to the ice to be a champion. Wherever the journey of life leads is unknown but one thing is certain, long after Yost has forgotten the names of the past the Wolverine will always remain inside.

“We know that hockey is where we live, where we can best meet and overcome pain and wrong and death. Life is just a place where we spend time between games.” -Fred Shero

Was this meant to be a parody of the fluffy articles you see regularly in the newspaper?  No offense, but I learned nothing from reading this.

I'm sorry my comment hurt your feelings, but "trolling," seriously?  I sat in Yost every game of 1988 when it was half-empty and we were mediocre.  You may not like my opinion, but labeling me a troll is comical.  I just didn't like your post - remember that first amendment thing?

Yeah, that's why it's in the Diary section. There's no new info about anything, it's just someone writing a piece about a certain subject they want to talk about.

You keep trying to defend yourself by putting others down. Just stop. Of course you can have an opinion but don't dog the guy because he wrote something. It's not like it was an article littered with inaccuracies. Where are your super-informative hockey posts?? Also, your argument may be more valid if all of his other posts WEREN'T so informative; they are. This is the diaries section anyway, where you can write whatever the heck you want to. CI, thanks for taking the time to write the fluff...it's nice once-in-a-while.

Anyone with 22 points would do well to ask more questions and post fewer opinions.  A simple, what is the purpose of this diary or of having a diary would have gotten you a pleasant response, no trolling votes, and you would have both learned something about what goes on here and built up some credbility and acceptance.

The first ammendment is about free speech and that congress can't restrict it, not that moderators or others on MGOBLOG can't restrict it.  See, now you even learend something else.  Hopefully, you are now on your way to better MGOBLOG days.

Considering the posts that CenterIce has made previously, it seems your comments were a little out-of-place. Not everything you read, on this blog, is informative. He's paying tribute to those players that have moved on (or are about to move on). Not everyone goes to the NHL. Some see their carrers end with the NCAA Tourney. Take a moment to reflect on those who helped to build the program. They deserve just as  much accolade as those currently on the 2011-12 team.

I want to voice my support for this comment on a deeper level than a +1. As a general rule with diaries, the best idea is to either give constructive criticism, say something nice, or just move on.

Sure, you (dcblue92) are entitled to your opinion as much as CenterIce, me or Bronco648; just know that if you're expressing your views in a diary CenterIce writes, people are going to be defensive when you "call him out" in that manner. CenterIce is a valued member of the MGoBlog community, to say the least; his posts are routinely front-paged or at least given mention on the front page, and he's shown himself to be a knowlegable and reasonable person. I only mention this because something that you consider "fluff", a lot of people reading this consider "the opinion of someone who has shown to have worthwhile opinions".

I have to admit, when I saw "Michigan Hockey: The Journey" I was excited as I thought this was going to be a discussion about the Big Ten Network doing a story on UM Hockey. Guess, "The Journey" is just a hoops story-line show the B1G Network does.

Would love to see Red make it back to the Frozen Four and win another Championship. It seems crazy, that he has taken UM to 22 straight NCAAs, and been to what, 12 or 15 Frozen Fours in those 22 years, but only 2 Titles. It really shows how hard it is to win in Hockey Planko. UM had the best winning percentage in College hockey in the 1990s and had only 2 National Championships. Though, UM had the best team in hockey 3 or 4 years straight (95, 96, 97 and 98). Heck my senior year, 1995, UM had a great team and lost in OT to Lake St at Munn in the regional final. UM had beaten Lake St 3 times that year (including a week before at the CCHA Finals). Lake St went on to win the National TItle easily if I remember correctly and Steve Shields gave way to Marty Turco.
