Michigan Draft Picks -- a complete history

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

With the NFL Draft taking place tonight, I figure I'd post the complete history of Wolverines in pro football drafts.

This post won't just be the NFL Draft. When compiling my Football SuperGuide, I made sure to find the draft histories for multiple leagues.

One thing to note is some guys being in italics. That indicates that they got their degree at Michigan and played 4 years here, but transferred out and played their 5th at another school and were drafted from that school.

Here is every Wolverine to ever be selected in the NFL draft-

Michigan has had 42 first round draft picks and two number 1 picks (Tom Harmon and Jake Long).

The Lions have drafted 29 Wolverines all-time, the most of any team. Green Bay is right behind them with 27 Wolverine selections.

The AFL Draft took place from 1960-1966. In 1967, the AFL and NFL held a joint draft, ending the AFL-only draft that existed pre-merger.

Then, there is the WFL College Draft of the World Football League that lasted two seasons in the mid-70s. Due to their two seasons of existence, they only had one draft which took place in 1974.

If there weren't 32 teams in the NFL today, there would be more than 8 rounds.

The XFL wasn't that big. Thankfully.

Oddly enough Trezelle Jenkins never even played a game on the team he was drafted by.

In fact, the only Michigan player to ever play in the XFL was Ben Huff (RIP) for the Orlando Rage who had the best regular season record in the XFL.

My last pay check was $9500 working 12 hours a week online. My sisters friend has been averaging 15k for months now and she works about 20 hours a week. I can't believe how easy it was once I tried it out. This is what I do...  www.jobs-review.com

I'm making over $7k a month working part time. I kept hearing other people tell me how much money they can make online so I decided to look into it. Well, it was all true and has totally changed my life. This is what I do... www.jobs-review.com

Michigan is one of 6 schools that has had a player drafted every year since 1967 (first year of the NFL as we know it today). Other Big Ten schools are Nebraska and MSU, OSU and Penn State missed just one year.

The latest the first Michigan player was drafted since 1967 was round 5, so even with the modern 7 rounds, Michigan would still be one of the only 6 teams (MSU would not by a couple years, Nebraska would though they had back-to-back years in '69 and '70 where their first was in round 7).

As you can see above, the last time a Michigan player wasn't drafted was 1938, which I believe is the longest in history.

Look at the drop-off after 2008 (in terms of the volume of picks and their position). Last year was arguably the best draft since then.

It's only one measure, but it's not completely unfair to say that RichRod and Brady had less to work with than Lloyd.

not to include the AFL draft from 1960-68? Joe O'Donnel, for instance, played his career at the Buffalo Bills starting in the AFL in 1964.

Frank Clark is not listed, this list is obviously outdated, horrible and bad, and you should feel bad.

/s obviously,

Great Work! It'll be interesting to see what rounds players like Countess, Morgan, Pipkens etc. end up getting drafted in after a year of HARBAUGH!

I think all you have to do is look at my avatar photo to realize a guy like that isn't about to be taken in the 12th round without a reason. The reason is that he was already signed with the great Michigan Panthers of the USFL to a blockbuster contract. AC and Herschel Walker were signed as basically league franchise players to get things off the ground and be taken seriously.

The real question mark on the list is Wayman Britt! Is that really true? He didn't actually play any football here did he? Kupec, Jokisch, Washington and a few others played both sports but I don't remember Britt doing it.
