It's time for the 3rd installment of my divisive, food-based poll series. This time the focus is on fast food joints.

Well, relatively. Once a friend and I came back from a long backpacking trip. It was pretty rustic. On our way home we had a layover in Schipol. First place we went to, McDonald's. Just to taste that fat laden food, It was great.

CTC has far less sugar than Raisin Bran Crunch, and the Cap'n. In fact, it has about as much sugar as Kashi GO LEAN.
It's delicious, but it's not high in sugar.
But Life is amazing. HBO is just okay for me.

Yeah, but CTC is like 80% air so you have to eat most of the box to be as satisfied as eating a couple bowls of Raisin Bran Crunch or Honey Bunches of Oats.

Potbelly is great if you want a salt sandwich for $10. Firehouse and Which Wich are better takes on the hot sammie in my opinion.

Jimmy John's is good only when it's free (when they drop their samples at offices). I will never purchase anything from Jimmy John's.

Subway is way overrated. 20 years of trying and I still can't find a sandwich good enough to re-order.
But McDonald's has to be the worst, right? I mean I don't like being a hater or piling on. There are a lot of people that like it and they've built an empire. But I've had more meals that I've regretted from McDonald's than from any other place combined, and I don't go there often to begin with.
There are some standby things that are good, and their fries are terrific, but it's the last place I want to spent $10 to get dinner.
(Take this commentary for what it's worth, given that my favorite fast food place is Taco Bell).

They put so much sugar in their food that it is addictive to kids. I'm sure there is more sugar in McDonalds than Cinnamon Toast Crunch.

I voted Subway the worst. Their turkey and italian meats used to be decent 15 years ago, but their quality (especially the bread) has really fallen off as they attempted to cling to the $5/6 footlong model. I haven't left Subway happy in over 10 years and haven't even eaten at one in the last 5.

Allow me to tell a truly frightening tale, apt on a cold, dreary Halloween:
Last Friday night, the plan had been to go to a restaurant as a family, but my 4 year old decided NO-WAY-NO-HOW was he going to go out in public and be a decent, miniature human being, so my wife said they'd stay while I took the 7 y/o to the eatery of his choice. Man of my word, I let him decide with no sway or coaching, and with naturally, his choice: McDonald's.
I'm annoyed, but don't complain, and decide that even though I haven't darkened the golden-arched doors in years but for the occaisional breakfast burrito, surely there must be SOMETHING edible on the dinner menu...
Unimpressed, I settle on the "Artisan" chicken sandwich. It looks good enough on the fast food Glamour Shots displayed on the milkshake splattered screens overhead, and the price; nearly eight(!) dollars, combined with the descriptor: "ARTISAN", tells me that certainly this; THIS, is a sandwich that the McDonald brothers themselves would be proud of.
The fast-food scene in the film Falling Down was immediately what came to mind as I opened the lid on the corrugated carboard casket that became the vehicle to this poor chicken's penultimate resting place. To think that an animal, ANY animal gave it's life to become something so pathetic, so depressing, sickens me still today. The enbalmer that prepared this poor chicken to lay it in it's proverbial casket had obviously given it no more attention than he would to something he stepped in and had stuck to his shoe. The lettuce would have been discarded as overripe in most third world countries. The tomato, eschewed by the worms in the field, was salvaged to adorn the poor carcass, now the consistency of nay, not the Spam itself, but the jelly that accompanies the Spam inside it's can; a pedestrian attempt at "grillmarks" painted on the flesh of this horrific specimen like the face of a sad, sad clown.... For I know that this establishment owns no grill.
Artisan? I ask... What sort of sick, demented artist would create such a ghastly piece? ART, you say? Why, In the form of the macabre, like the grisly paintings hung in the parlor of the grotesque...
Maybe?
The fries were ok though.

as for the 4 yr old, that's on you dad (and mom). child training pays off hugely, and the liberty it gives you to do fun stuff with them is one of the payoffs.

You brought this upon yourself. You were at McDonalds. Not Panera. Not the fancy salad place. Not even the school cafeteria. McDonalds! You order a Big Mac or a Quarter Pounder, maybe just a couple Cheeseburgers, and definitely fries! You know EXACTLY what's going to be in theat little cardboard box (or wrapper). What possessed you to cause you to order some cockamaimie salad AT MCDONALDS?

I would call 5 Guys and Qdoba fast casual and don't think they apply to this survey. Basically, if they don't have a drive-through, it's not fast food to me.
That said, 5 Guys is terrible for the price point and their burger size has greatly diminished over the last 5 years.

I suppose us millennials consider places like Chipotle, Qdoba, and 5 guys fast food, as we abandon the typical fast food places like McD's, BK, Wendy's, etc.
I haven't had 5 guys in a while, but from what I remember: They give a ton of fries (and they are the awesome little fries), their burgers are huge, filling, and messy, and their shakes are delicious. And if I have to pay $12 for that compared to $4 at McD or BK, then so be it.

I'd drop $15 at 5 guys for a burger, fries, and a drink over the following alternatives:
$5 for the same at McD's and BK?
$20 for the same at Applebees?
$10 for the same at Sonic, DQ, Wendy's?

Shoot. I guess that's the difference between you and me. If I'm going the fast food route, I'm going to make it count. I've spent $20 at Taco Bell for just myself. I remember spending $35 at A&W a couple times. $15 at 5 Guys is nothing. Neither is $20 at Qdoba. (for the record, I'm 5'9'' 145lbs, so I don't do this very often; last time I had fast food or casual fast food was probably 3 years ago).

It was good, but not that good. If i had to guess, a similar deal at sonic, dq or Wendy's would be around $8, and I'm not saying those are deals, but better value than 5G. Applebees would be about $10-12.
I'd much rather do Chipotle/qdoba, Jimmy John's, potbelly, boardwalk, etc, which are all in the $9 ballpark for me.

I get the same thing every visit to CFA and it's the spicy deluxe. Never had their grilled chicken. If I'm going to eat fast food chicken, it will be fried.

McDonalds is probably the best for the environment/education.
Panera is the worst if they count as fast food although Chipotle is nearly as bad. The marketing campaigns from those two are brutal for science education everywhere.

I voted Panera my favorite assuming they qualify as fast-food. I prefer my food to be of a "high-quality" that actually constitutes nutritious food. Panera is the only fast food establishment that I trust to deliver that. I eat a lot of salads, and they make a good one for a more than fair price.

My choices change rather singificant based on my blood alcohol level. Sober, Arby's or KFC sounds a lot better than Taco Bell or Checkers/Ralley's. Wasted, I want all the tacos and burritos. I don't eat a lot fast food sober, so I mostly went with my drunk choices. I could eat Panda Express' Orange Chicken drunk or sober to the point of explosion.
Doesn't pouring the milk in first promote splashing and spilling the milk?

Otherwise I haven't eaten from a fast food chain in decades. I try to keep it local, and I avoid chemical additives, heavily processed ingredients, hydrogenated anything, mono and digycerides, etc. I am one of those annoying folks who reads the ingredient lists and labels, every single time, and who asks a restaurant if they use stuff I won't eat.
I attempted Chipotle about ten years ago when they opened nearby, it smelled great.. I asked the owner about hydrogenated oils. He said he didn't know but let's have a look. Clearly stated on the label for the burrito wrap/tortilla was "partially hydrogenated soy bean oil." I thanked him and walked out not to try the place anywhere.
Somehow food chains make money in places where unhealthy ingredients have been banned, like NYC and Europe. I have no idea why they continue to offer up food prepared with ingredients that cannot lawfully be fed to animals in other countries. Greed is not always good.

I don't know how fast food places in NYC survive, unless they are entirely patronized by tourists. Why go to McDonald's when for about $5, you can get delicious street meat, $2 for a slice, or for $10, get a pound of salad at a corner deli. I would have put down Shake Shack or sweetgreen if they qualified. The last time I had actual fast food was when I drove down to State College in 2010, and I couldn't find anything else along the highway. The food was as disappointing as the game, and the bad memories of both lingered longer than you would have wanted.
