META: Summary MGoPoint Statistics - July 2012
July 2012 MGoPoint Summary
(Four-week period ending July 27th)
INTRODUCTION:
This is the second month of collecting summary data for the top 300 MGoBloggers by points, and the second month saw total production in this group jump from 7,332 points to 7,758 points, or a 5.5% increase over the previous month.
Last month, 219 posters in this group contributed at least one post to MGoBlog, and that total jumped a whopping 2 posters to 221 “non-zero contributors” in July, or just shade under 1%. Once again, it is the off-season, so I imagine this changes, but it is rather interesting all the same that 221 posters is only 73.6% of the total analyzed group.

Yet again, we see how being the main provider of front page content – not to mention the creator of the site itself – changes things. The maximum for each week is, of course, Brian’s total. On the other hand, the minimum only moved about 15 points, which points to the possibility that this group is a somewhat insulated group compared to most other MGoBloggers.
Indeed, in June and July, the fight for the 300th spot in the rankings has led to only three exchanges of that spot, whereas in the middle of this same group, some posters have jump as many as ten in a week. The average and the mean moved at only a slightly faster rate than June as well, with the mode fluctuating each week, indicating that perhaps several posters had bursts of activity throughout the month.

PERFORMANCE METRICS:
Like last month, I have divided the Top 300 into groups of 50, ranked by point total as of July 27th. I have also, for purposes of comparison, placed June’s results for the same metrics in this diary as well. The results are as follows:

Strangely, they are fairly similar, although you can see some shifts in here, most notably the marked increase in production in the so-called “Third 50” (if you want a reference on the site table, this is roughly the group between Erik In Dayton and maizedandconfused).
Yet again, as was the case in June, the first two groups account for over half of the points generated, but that production fell from 62% to 56%, which is a significant drop in overall production from this group. The bulk of the posting, as you can sort of see from the names of those who posted the most in July, shift toward the middle of the group, with the Third and Fourth 50 increasing their presence 7% this past month.
Next month, there will be a quarterly summary which will include some discussion of posting activity during what really is the doldrums of the offseason. When the season begins, I will shift to collecting data on Sundays and expand this analysis to game open threads (I've studied the site and I believe I can easily do this) to get some insight into some of the most vocal commentators in game situations.
I clearly need to start getting into more arguments so I can boost my post count.
Post something positive about Tremendous and Mr. Rager will find you.
I'm a big deal now!!!

Well, it's official, my two hours a day at the pool are not enough. Time to up it to 4.

Don't even think about trying to pass me, LSAClassof2000. I've already planned to launch an attack on that WolvinLA2 asshole.

I look at metrics on my job... so naturally I wanted more job-like stuff mixed in with my Michigan fandom. <shrugs> Interresting to see how the top part lives. Why don't you look at the middle of the pack some and see how much movement there is there...just for fun.
I found a hobby. Either that or got way busier at work...

It appears I offend no one on this board, despite my repeated efforts to defend, in no particular order, watching the Premier league, the conclusion of the last episode of BSG, and the relevance of Big (L)East -- well, two of those three, anyway, one isn't defensible.
I think I need an arch-nemesis, much like Dr. Doofenschmirtz has in Perry the Platypus, until that one episode when he switched to the Panda from Seattle, but that was just to trick Perry and the other animal agents. (Sorry, spoiler alert there, oops.)
I am therefore taking applications for anyone who wants to battle my wits and creativity in ongoing rants on this Board, so we can mutually increase our points, eventually overtake Brian, and be forced out of the Board (much like PayPay did to Elon Musk) so that we can use our newlyfound earning to build a new blog and rocket ourselves into space (again, much like Elon Musk), and thereby get a cartoon-turned-movie hero based on us and even get a cameo in the sequel (once again, much like Elon Musk).

All of you in the top 20 list: Send me $100 in an unmarked envelope immediately, or I report you to your supervisors at work.
Don't think I won't.

I feel like I let the team down and shamed my family name.
I'll do better. I promise.

200 of my points came from getting front paged. Add 10 for writing the diary, and I'm down to a lowly 41.
But I refuse to give up my 4th place finish, so you haters can back off!
of the Simpsons that produced your avatar...I watched it tonight

OK...now this is just flat out embarrassing. You would think someone as experienced as I am would be able to stop posting the same darn thing over and over again.
My bad!
Pretty sneaky sis...
You just reminded me I forgot to give the Diarist of the Week his points.
hart20 gets a 400-point swing.
other day and found it a bit more entertaining. I think there were 17 pages of members with negative point totals. Also, the number of people in virtual Bolivia was quite impressive -- a rogues gallery of trolls, flamebaiters, anarchists, and sociopaths.
Please direct some of your analytical firepower to this unsavory group. The tinfoil hat crowd is always more interesting than internet do-gooders.

Getting data on trolls will be more difficult since frequently their posts become invisible to non-mods. Perhaps we could talk to Brian and get him to open up moderator access to study how and why people got caved and the corresponding degree of Bolivian. Alternatively, we could have interviews with current users who have been to Bolivian and back and their experiences on the journey.
Was Q the guy that started the Treadwell thread? Because he was at -1 billion at one point. How he made it out of the abyss (if it's not him) is beyond me.
Also, I really need to post here more often despite my lack of insights, interesting anecdotes, or anything really.
August 2nd, 2012 at 11:33 AM ^
has been on that list as long as I can remember; definitely way before everyone knew Treadwell's name.
When you mentioned some posters jumping 10 spots in the rankings in a single day, my mind immediately went to the sweet spot of point totals, around 4000-9000 points. In this area the posters are frequently separated by fewer than 100 points. Especially in the posbang era it was possible to earn 200 upvotes or more on a single post and jump 401+ points and several rankings in minutes. The distances between posters gradually increase up the list. At present I'm spending quality time snuggled up between Blazefire and aaamichfan while the three of us traverse the great TomVH desert before we reach his abandoned capital city several thousand MGoPointz of desolate, winswept wasteland away.
