META: Info for new MGoBoarders

Submitted by JeepinBen on

Every year lots of new people find this corner of the internet, and some struggle to find all the awesome information stored here. First, take a second and scroll up and look under the winged helmet - there are a lot of very useful links. I'm putting some of them here because lots of people have no idea that they exist, and we've seen tons of threads (Where can I watch!?!?) created because... well because people don't know that a sticky thread exists for that.

FAQ:http://mgoblog.com/content/mgofaq

Not sure who Tacopants is? Slow on the other inside jokes? want to know why Brian has a MS in Computer engineering? There's your answer.

  • "Tacopants"? Tacopants is Jason Avant's eleven-foot tall imaginary friend. Chad Henne spent much of 2005 hitting him between the numbers, which are unfortunately eight feet off the ground and made of dreams. Blessed with infinite eligibility and the ability to sneak on and off the field without alerting the referees -- made of dreams, remember -- Tacopants has taken a lesser role in the offense as Henne matures but still pops up at inopportune times. The term has its genesis in this post.

That's stuff about the guy who runs/owns/is MGoBlog.  Think he's betrayed his ethics? Have a tip/correction? Email is a way better way to do it than a dickish thread.

Can't start a thread? Not sure if "Denard" is a bad thread title? What's on topic? This isn't Nam, there are rules.

Coming to AA: http://mgoblog.com/content/guide-ann-arbor-eating-drinking

Guide to eating and drinking. Zingerman's is good, but overpriced. Maize and Blue is better. /shots fired

Stop making threads about it.

Hope this has been a helpful and informative little diary. Now go enjoy wife day and the rest of the bye week.

Jeepinben:  see if you can find a single, working link to help with formatting, embedding, etc. There was a link somewhere in the FAQ previously on http stuff, but when I went to try it, the link was broken.

I can't help but feel that the people who read it dont need it, and the people who need it don't read it. I can't help thinking that the GPS coordinates for Bolivian should be in there as well, it might help some lost soul find their way back home.

I was kind of thinking the same thing . . . there's no real good way to point people in the right direction other than having all the information in their face and at the click of a button (the "MGoBoard' drop-down at the top.

Nevertheless, its always good for people to get a refresher.  I have to admit - I forgot how to use block quotes so I'm thankful to Jeepin' for posting that information.

I won't lie.  I spent a bunch of time here in 2008 before reading all of the nifty survival skills.  I'll never forget when I wrote "Notre Dame, more like Notre Lame" and got negged to bolivia!  Now I see that shit and I want to scratch my eyes out.

I am sure it is posted somewhere obvious, but how do you up or down vote other than the OP?  For instance, if someone has a score of "5" how did they get that number?

What magic icon was pushed?

I have been too embarassed too ask, having been on here for a couple of years.

so there should be a little thing at the bottom of posts that says "normal" with a button next to it that says "moderate". The "normal" option is part of a drop-down list, with normal being a standard +1 vote. The rest are descriptive, with the good adjectives counting as an upvote and bad ones counting as a downvote.

The kicker, of course, is that none of it counts for anything any more.

Now, I have only been reading this for 3-4 years now and got an account within the last few months, so upon reading this I almost died (within the original Tacopants article):

"Jake Long's moved to left tackle, which makes me nervous about both tackles spots instead of just one"

Brian wrote those words. Let us hope that more of the position groups that make us nervous turn out so well in the future.

...MGoHoF (that's why it's contained in the "Usefull Stuff" dropdown). It contains dozens of links to useful or historical pages. Also, it's a wiki, so any user can amend it. You don't need permission.

I'm all for a more organized "where can I watch" area.  I'm thinking a page under the tabs that is seperated by state and lists address and phone number and possibly a web site.  This would be overall a good thing for the blog.  Someone get to it. chop chop.

I am generally afraid to post because there seem to be a lot of rules. I knew the sticky posts were there, but a thread like this is a good refresher and has lots of new (to me) info also.
