Making My Wife Happy
As I recounted in another thread, if I close another deal in August [August will already be a good month FWIW] I will be allowed to buy one of those high end blue football jerseys where they will sew your name and a number of your choosing onto the jersey. My natural instinct would be to pick #2 for Woodson or #21 for [correction: Biakabutuka] Biankabituka [crosses my fingers and hope that is spelt right without having to look it up]...but my wife says...wouldn't it be so romantic if you used the our anniversay date #19. I am not opposed to picking the number to score hubby hero points...but I wondered who actually wore the number...
Well in one of those links you dump into your favourites list and never use came to mind...from the Bentley Historical Library which has all manners of information stored about every UM athlete in numerous sports. They have a little tool that allows you to plug in a number and voila! out pops every player to ever wear number 19...so here is the complete list:

I am inclined to pick some obscure name from the list like Stanley Hozer...but the elder Forcier stands out as does Bellamy's name...is there any other that I should not pass up?
Why would you get Jason Forcier's jersey? He never played. If you really want to go with #19, I'd get Bellamy. Just get a different number and score points doing something else.
This topic is not nearly as exciting as I thought it would be.
Tshimanga Biakabutuka.
With my Elvis voice..."Thank you, thank you very much"
Remy Hamilton and Mike Gillette.
Did you know that Mike Gillette was Michigan's all-time leading scorer until Tyrone Wheatley took over that crown? Gillette now ranks fourth, behind only Garrett Rivas, Anthony Thomas, and Tyrone Wheatley.
Edit: I just wanted to add that Remy Hamilton is right behind Gillette in fifth place.
This is the same dilema that the hall of fame has, though. Kickers are often leading scorers, but few considder them Hall worthy because they play so few plays. Even though Hamilton was an All-American, I would tilt away from him because he was a kicker.
and a outstanding catcher on the U-M baseball team. Nice combo...
But I'm pretty sure that you can't order a number and then add a corresponding nameplate that associates with a current OR former player. In other words, you can order a #2 and give it the name "Zenkman" or "Beibleheimer," but you can't order a #2 and put "Woodson" above it.
Why? Collegiate licensing. The NCAA says it's wrong to use a student athlete's likeness as merchandising. Makes sense. I know a few years ago I tried to sneak a jersey through Eastbay, but I got a call back from them that literally said the University denied my request. Pick again.
NOW, with that being said... in my closet I happen to have a #2 with a "WOODSON" NOB, as well as a #21 with a "HOWARD" NOB (Name On Back) as well. I also know several of you also own #10 jerseys with "BRADY" across the back. These, of course, are all part of Nike's Gridiron Generals series, and as for how all of that fits into the NCAA rules I HAVE NO IDEA. So maybe there's a chance. But sadly enough, I'm pretty sure if you order your #19 Bellamy or Hamilton (those are the ones I'd narrow it down to, btw) I think Adidas is going to refuse the request.
I know all of that...sorry if I was not 100% clear...the plan is to put my name on it...I still want to have in the back of my mind some excellent player in addition to the anniversay so that when someone inevitably asks, "why did you pick that number" I can sound moderately intelligent about the Michigan greats who wore #19...in addition to sounding like a loving and sweet husband
What if you wanted to get your own name on the back, which also happened to be the same as in the above scenario?
Then you are screwed, I think
then his name and number can be used. It can't be done for current student/athletes as that would construe using their likeness for profit which is against NCAA rules.
I'm pretty sure this is the correct interpretation. This is also why you can find graduated players on the covers of NCAA games.
There is a way around this. If you want the sewn on lettering of your favorite current or former player. You just need to buy the number and then take the jersey to a Hockey shop, they will put any name you want on the back without question. Well, maybe not in Ann Arbor.
This was a long time ago, but I had to have a Maurice Taylor jersey with the name, I was 15. Anyway we bought the jersey then did this exact thing, just be careful to match the coloring, they usually can pretty easily.
Of course you risk the Adidas representative ripping your jersey off your back.
I have a 41 with Mesko on the back... though they screwed up the placement of some of the other things on it (from Dick's)
One of the most prolific kickers in AFL history, Remy Hamilton is best-known for his career as a kicker at Michigan, where he hit a dramatic game-winner to beat Notre Dame in 1994.
I looks like the early leader for me would be Hamilton...unless someone knows something about some of the older names...
Suggestions for the name on UMFC's 19 jersey:
#5 - Hamilton
#4 - Bellamy
#3 - Gillette (people will think you're old-school)
#2 - Forcier (most people will think you're a dummy for getting Tate's number wrong)
#1 - Your wife's maiden name. On top of a custom jersey that should at least net you a backrub or two.
Wife's Maiden Name...ooooohhhhh yeeeahhhh...now there is an idea...
Great video...I remember that game...that was the first year I was in grad school and my introduction to UM football...thanks for sharing...
Wasn't that also the game where Beano Cook said about Ron Powlus "It's not a question of IF he will win a Heisman...but how many." ???

How could you go wrong with: Stanley Knickerbocker or Henry Fonde...I think he went into acting. Maybe even Tad Van Pelt...a small replica of the former NFL star.
so i'd be all set in your situation.
you gotta be thinking ahead, man.
Too sweet...I bow at your greatness...
While I have this post up...I wonder if it would interest people if we went through one or two numbers a day and debated the greatest Michigan players to wear each number...it could help pass the days till Sept 5...
hey look at it this way - if a truly great Wolverine ever ends up wearing #19 you are set.
no offense to the other #19's but I'm talking about players like Harmon/Leach/Carter/Morris/Howard/Woodson etc etc etc
Robert Brown was an all american center and captain on Yost's 1925 team. Yost referred to this team as one of the best he had ever coached.
You are absolutely right...just checked the All-American list and there is...very cool...
2 All Americans wear #19 ...not a bad deal...and you get to keep the wife happy...and look like a dilentant of the program...
Yeah the other one is Remy Hamilton. However, I would be inclined not to put any name on the jersey.
Sidenote, if say your last name was something generic like Brown or Smith would you be able to a put it on jersey if there was a player that had this name? I am just not familiar with how the NCAA rules work.
I was having that same thought myself...just the number...
Definitely a Forcier Jersey, he's gonna be great these next four years. Wait..wrong one? Whoops!
You know, for a community that loves funny and weird names so much, I'm astonished that nobody has mentioned Knickerbocker. That's just a funny name. I'm not saying that when someone asks you why 19 you immediately and only say Knickerbocker, but I'm sure you could work it in there somehow.
Actually he already was mentioned but you would have had to scroll to see it.
He had a respectable career, and he was always a likable guy. Its a good recent relic, and you would have a perpetual reminder of Bill Bellamy to wear around as well.
that my roommate last year was named Remy. However, he is a State fan.
should have gotten married on the 21st like I did...
I'd pick Brown and not Hamilton (a good place kicker is still a kicker...)
I got married on the 4th of September...there have to be a few good ones for that number ;)
Gotta keep the wife happy (and don't I know it right now, she's expecting our first!)
And before anybody asks about #4 the correct answer is the wide open Rob Vander Leest.
(As long as they don't charge by the letter.)
I can't possibly be the only one to be confused by the title of this Diary... Can I?
Becaues at first glance, I thought this may be deserving of an OT in the title.
I mean, I'm into making your wife happy just as much as the next guy, but idk if this is the right place to discuss it.
I have been quite hesitant to click on this post as I was dead certain that this was going to provide the details of a highly successful elixir of cialis, viagra and extendz discovered by the OP, with preliminary scientific data provided.
And I am just way too young to be reading that kind of stuff.
That #19 jersey is going to be really cool.
You're welcome, though this thread has finally convinced me once and for all that I shouldn't get married 'til the year 3001.

This is cool - my greatgrandfather was Marshall H. Boden who wore it in 1926! Proud Wolverines for 4 generations!!!
