Foote on WDFN: Rodriguez building dynasty, Barwis a freak

Former University of Michigan linebacker Larry Foote spent hisoffseason working out in Ann Arbor with the new Rich Rodriguez regime, and he liked what he saw.

"It's gonna be a different team this year," he said Friday toWDFN-AM's Stoney and Wojo on their annual Radiothon. "They still need alittle more talent, but they're going to shock a lot of people thisyear just by the mental and physical conditioning they're doing."

"I'm telling you, it's going to be a dynasty created."

Foote, who plays for the Pittsburgh Steelers inthe NFL, was joined in Ann Arbor by a number of former U-M players —including Braylon Edwards, James Hall and, surprisingly, TyroneWheatley — and spent considerable time working under new strength andconditioning coach Mike Barwis.

"He's a freak," Foote said of Barwis, who doggedly challenged him tobeat his running times. "He's a little nutso. He used to do theultimate fighting, so the guys got some screws loose."

Listen to the full interview to hear Foote talk about his dreamabout the Detroit Lions' record (it wasn't a nightmare), his thoughtson the Steelers' upcoming season and the Michigan State "gremlins" thatkeep messing with his phone:

WHEATLEY?! The positive implications this is going to have, for recruits to walk in and meet Braylon, or Wheatley, or whoever happens to be there that day. Just stunning. So curious about why these guys weren't welcomed back before.

Also... "I'm telling you, it's going to be a dynasty created."

WE ARE GOING TO BE A MACHINE.

As a Steeler fan, I endorse Larry Foote going to Camp Barwis. The Black and Gold need both he and Woodley to perform at a high level to get back to the playoffs.

Ninja Football, >So curious about why these guys weren't welcomed back before. ...i'm very interested to know this myself. I've heard of Law and Toomer not leaving on good terms. However this seems to run somewhat deeper with other ex-wolverines also.

I don't believe that the issues was that these weren't welcome back, there was little reason to come back to train. They weren't going to be pushed by Gitt. They went elsewhere during the offseason to prepare. Now that Camp Barwis is in town, everyone has a reason to spend their offseasons in AA. While the rifts between Law and Toomer and the old staff have been well documented, I don't believe that there were any issues between Wheatley and the program. I seem to remember that after he retired he was working as an assistant coach with the UofM track team before going to coach his high school football team (I thing Angelique wrote the articles on this, but I'm not certain). The way I read the quote is that the surprisingly part for Wheatley is that he is retired, but still coming back to get his ass Barwised.
