Sorry if this is a stupid question but is Wolverine inspired by Michigan at all or is his color scheme and "winged" mask just a coincidence?
Iowa Wallpaper (take 2)
We're back on the road again this week to face an Iowa team that
unexplainably chocked against B1G bottom-feeder Minnesota has been inconsistent this season. Since I already went the whole "animal eye" route with Northwestern's wallpaper and the corn thing has been done [well!] by monuMental, I wanted to do something different.
Now, as a former resident of north campus (go Bursley!) and a Computer Science major, it will come as little surprise that I'm a Marvel comic book fan. With the emergence of Marvel movies, I'm sure you're all familiar with X-Men's Wolverine. Those of you who know comic book heroes by movie only, however, probably aren't familiar with the Avengers' Hawkeye (although you will be, since he'll be in the upcoming Avengers movie). Generally, I think using Wolverine (X-Men) as a "mascot" for Michigan is a little lame, but seeing as how our opponent this weekend also has a Marvel alter-ego, I couldn't resist:
I don't know of any direct influence but I know that Wolverine underwent a number of costume changes since his origin... maybe he picked up the maize and blue colors from our boys...
It a coincidence. It has never been stated, to my knowledge, that there is a connection in any way. The only thing I can think of is comics look better with bright colors, and the yellow and blue of Wolverine's costume fits.
As for the pattern of the costume, there are two versions of Wolverine;s origins. The most accepted one today is the "born a mutan-human", however, there is another that Wolverine is actually a mutated wild wolverine that evolved into a human-like figure, but with super-human traits. Perhaps the patterns of the costume were based on the patterns of real wolverines because of this lesser accepted (although original) origin story.
I did some research on it a while ago and found that they claim that it is all just coincidence. Not necessarily believing what they said about it, I continued looking for some backstory, but I never found anything to the contrary.
I have a hard time buying it. Of all the primary color costumes in the world you use the same colors for a guy called Wolverine? And give him wing ears, and tiger strips? When they switched him to the brown it made a lot more sense. But they went back, and it just seems like a heck of a coincidence.
man, that thing is so good, I'm just using it again! and cropped out the date and the schedule!
What does north campus have to do with comic books?
I love the Marvel idea, it really works well.
He's just playing on the stereotype that technology/engineering/science geeks are into comic books. Watch Big Bang Theory and you'll see the writers of that show use this sterotype regularly.
Stereotypes are stereotypes for a reason. Just sayin'. (comic book fan since '92 although with the wide and kids I can't afford them anymore).
PROTIP: Refer to your wife as "the wide" only on MGoBlog. NEVER in her presence.
And would post them on n campus. Ther were amazing I've always wanted a copy of the OSU game poster... Anyone remember those? Know where I could get one?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think he makes a guest appearance in Thor (i.e., the guy with bow and arrow targeting Thor as he is fighting to get back to his hammer).
They were trying to get him established for the Avengers movie.
About 50% of the Mgoblog users got that reference, the other 50% (the youngsters) have absolutely no idea what you're talking about and are wondering why you're putting up a picture of a young version of the "dude from tower heist".
You need to give us youngsters some credit. M*A*S*H is a classic and I know plenty of 21-25 y.o. who love the show and/or movie (I prefer the show, myself).
yellow and blue were pretty much always the X-Men's colors. except when they went black and yellow in the 80's or 90's...I try to forget anything that included Jubilee.
Wolverine, likwise, was almost always blue and yellow.
EDIT: sorry this was supposed to be higher in response to someones question. too lazy to move it.
Love it. Never really thought of Wolverine and Hawkeye in relation to the Big 10 teams... Regardless now my screensaver! Keep up the good work Blue Indy
Agree w/ wolv92 earlier, this is TOO great for just one use. I want it without the date to be able to use again next year.
(Went to grad school at Iowa, have a special dislike for them,… in the stands w/ Scarcelli’s dad that day. Dam, Houghtlin and Jimmy shoulda' held onto pick!)
