An Interview With Mike McGlinchey

Philadelphia (PA) William Penn Charter OT Mike McGlinchey is one of the latest juniors to receive an offer from Michigan, who join Wisconsin, Boston College, Duke, Maryland, Rutgers, and Virginia in extending a scholarship early in the process. McGlinchey is rated as a four-star and the #244 prospect overall on 24/7 and he's a member of the ESPNU 150 Watch List. At 6'8", 285 pounds, he has the prototypical frame for a left tackle, and his recruitment has really picked up in the last couple of weeks. I had the chance to chat briefly with Mike last night:

ACE: How is everything going with your recruitment, and which teams are going after you the hardest right now?

MIKE: Everything has been really exciting, and I have offers from Michigan, Wisconsin, Boston College, Maryland, Rutgers, Duke, and Virginia.

ACE: Any favorites of those teams right now?

MIKE: Yeah I really don't know who is at the top of my list right now. I still have to take the time to think about it and narrow down my choices.

ACE: How do you think you performed in your junior year?

MIKE: I think I performed well. I put a lot of hard work into making sure I do so!

ACE: What would you say are your biggest strengths on the field, and what are you working on to improve for your senior year and beyond?

MIKE: I have a lot of size and strength and quickness and I think I need to sure up my technique.

ACE: Who's your main recruiter at Michigan, and what are your thoughts on the school and the program?

MIKE: Coach Mallory. They are a great program with a huge tradition.

ACE: Any idea what your timeline is for wrapping up your recruitment?

MIKE: I want to be finished with the process by the end of this school year.

Ace, are you sure he didn't say:  " I have a lot of size and strength and quickness and I think I need to shore up my technique."?

The interview was over Facebook (I know, I know... some recruits prefer it, though I try to use the phone whenever possible), so I must have missed that when I was checking for grammar/spelling. Actually, "sure up" as opposed to "shore up" isn't too egregious—either works, really, and I'd rather keep as much of the recruit's actual wording as I can.

Thanks.  You're right, it's not egregorious at all, and if that's what he typed, you were definitely right in putting it that way in the interview.  I just thought that "shore up" was a more commonly used figure of speech, so it made more sense to me.

As always, thanks for the hard work!

I've seen McGlinchey listed as tall as 6'9".  It seems like there have been a bunch of 6'9" recruits the past couple years (Zach Banner, Jonah Pirsig, McGlinchey, etc.) when there weren't many before then.  Eventually we're going to be a planet of Na'avi.

I call dibs on the 9-foot-tall version of Zoe Saldana, though.  Keep your hands off.

I have played him in Basketball for the last three years. He is definitely 6'8" and he is very strong, he moves pretty well for his size but I do not think he is D-1 basketball player, which is not surprising because he plays football. When we played them scouts from BC, Syracuse, Pitt and West Virginia were in the gym.

285 lbs. with that baby face. Don't get me wrong I'm sure he really gets after it on the field or Hoke and Co. wouldn't have offered. He just looks like a guy I would let date one of my daughters...and I want no one to ever date my daughters. I hope he Goes Blue.

and you'd hardly notice it (based on his above the waist physique in the picture above).  Mike McGlinchey sounds like an offensive tackle name too.   Hope he Goes Blue.

Did he say he wants to decide by the end of this school year?  That would be June by my calculation.
