Impact Players

Submitted by Lordfoul on
Ok, so yesterday's post may have revealed too much of my emotional baggage about the upcoming season.  Thanks in advance to all that gave meaningful replies, they have helped shape my thoughts for today.

So here is my attempt to be more analytical about the 2009 season.  I am, like everyone else here, very excited to see what this year will bring for the Wolverines.  I am fully behind Rich Rod and his staff and believe that they will turn the ship around.  Looking at the roster gives me hope as well.  It seems to me that most positions will see an upgrade through better players, more experience, and fewer nagging injuries.  To really have a breakthrough season though, we will need to see several players step their game up.

Here are the top five players I expect to have a season shaping impact:
  1. Brandon Graham - An obvious choice when considering impact players, Graham has already reached this level of play.  He is probably the only bonafied star on the team (not counting Space Emperors) and will be the player opposing offenses must account for.  He plays a position that can cover for our biggest apparent weakness (safeties) by putting consistent pressure on the quarterback, allowing less time for pass plays to develop.  The team will feed off of his drive-killing sacks and forced turnovers.  His impact alone possibly accounts for an extra win or two.
  2. Tate Forcier - Again, this is an obvious choice.  (Really, I'm not trying to bore you.)  Watching the quarterback play last year was mostly depressing, but I really enjoyed the moments where Threet managed to get free for a surprising run.  With Tate we can reasonably expect this to occur much more often which will have a huge positive impact on our offensive efficiency.  I am not really expecting much more than natural talent shining through here, at least at first, but that should be enough to keep defenses guessing a whole lot more then last year.  The fact that he understands the offense from High School and the spring will certainly help speed his development.  So even taking into account freshman jitters, Tate should make a huge impact and account for another one or two game improvement in the win column.
  3. Jonas Mouton - I have been stoked about this guy's potential since his recruitment, and especially since he move to linebacker.  These days, with spread offenses of all sorts getting fast little buggers the ball with enough space to run around fools, every defense needs quick linebackers that can cover someone.  My memories of the last decade of Michigan Football are littered with big plays for opponents that stem from the short passing game.  As a superior athlete and a converted safety, Mouton may be just the defensive answer we have been missing.
  4. Brandon Minor - So the fumbles and injuries are in the past right?  After the way Minor finished the 2008 season, I believe so and that he may have more of an impact than any other single player on the roster.  Minor should punish defenders with his hard hitting running style, while grinding out the tough first downs.  He might be most effective with carries focused towards the middle of the line, maybe even lining up at fullback.  Opposing defenses would be forced to pick their poison, either bringing extra defenders into the box or allowing Minor to gut them up the middle.  With all of the hype about "Spread n' Shred," Minor could be the perfect counter.  Not to mention this is his last go-round to impress pro scouts.
  5. Zoltan Mesko - Really?  A Punter?  Arguably no other player has the chance to impact each and every game as much as Our Venerable Space Emperor (of Space).  Without his ability to put footballs into orbit, last year could have been much uglier for the Maize and Blue.  Heck, if half of the turnovers on our end were instead booming Zoltan bombs, our defense would have appeared light years better and we probably would have won at least another game or two.  I expect that he will average career highs across all punting statistics (except number kicked, hopefully) and suprise many when he fakes several for first downs (and at least one touchdown, you heard it here first!)
With these five players remaining healthy and contributing for the entire season, I predict at least five more victories than last year.  And while the impact of each should be significant, together they can make the team great.  If they could all establish themselves as stars, I could easily see 9-3 or even 10-2.

Five others I considered:
  • Greg Mathews:  Probably the most important player for Tate's development, Mathews has already established his ability to run crisp routes and catch tough passes.  Will he be the steady target a freshman QB needs?
  • Donovan Warren:  I still believe that Warren has the tools to be a shutdown corner at this level.  Maybe not a Woodson, but possibly a Ty Law sort.
  • Martavious Odoms:  We all saw how rediculously open Odoms got last year.  Now he has someone that can actually hit him, even while scrambling.
  • Mike Martin:  Can be the disruptive force in the middle to take some of the focus away from Graham.  Can have a large impact by consistently blowing up the opponents backfield.
  • Steve Shilling:  After a second year with Barwis and a third starting on the O-line, Shilling is ready to shine.  The move to the interior of the line could help Brandon Minor by allowing him to truck some safeties instead of linebackers.
Thanks again for all that replied yesterday.  Please let me know of any impact players I have missed.

We need to have the "threat" of home runs on each and every play.... BOTH on offense and defense. This did not exist last year. An open question to me is... Who on offense and who on defense provides that constant threat on each and every play?

Don't get me wrong, I really like Odoms; he runs great routes for a young guy, is obviously a competitor, and has a savvy approach to the game. However, I would not be surprised if he gets beaten out at the slot position by year's end, simply because he doesn't have "home run" speed. He is elusive and has the experience, but I think we have more talented athletes that could emerge once they gain experience. Then again, I could be completely wrong.

I disagree completely. you dont have to be the fastest person to be great. he is fast enough to beat most players and is elusive enough to beat the ones fast enough to catch him. I think odoms is kinda like a breaston in the way that he isnt the best WR, but one of the tops on the team . Odoms looked great at punt return ( purdue game)and i think that will be another way he will contribute to the team .Odoms did great things last year for being a freshman and having a terrible team around him...I think he will be tates second favorite WR behind roundtree. Tate and roundtree are friends and even went on a vacation together earlier this summer. So i think tate is comfortable with roundtree and will most likely go to him durring games. much like the spring game. . i understand where ur coming from but i disagree.

I'm going to have to go with V Smith. There was so much buzz around him after Spring Ball it sounded like he was the second coming. Now you don't hear anything about him. Sounded like he was super elusive and good speed even if he wasn't 'world class sprinter' like 2/3 of OSU's receiver, rb, cb, safties, lb, ol, dl and qb...the whole team except the kickers (according to their fans at least)

I think Graham is obviously are impact guy on defense. On offense I think it will be Minor. I think since it is his senior year and he has to impress the NFL scouts that he could have a monster season.

"Martavious Odoms: We all saw how rediculously open Odoms got last year. Now he has someone that can actually hit him, even while scrambling." The question is, was he open because defenses were only worried about stopping the run and knew that Threetidan couldn't hit Odoms when he was that deep, OR was he that open because he's that good an elusive. I think that it's a fair bit of the first with some of the second. Fortunately, receivers tend to improve from their first to second year simply because they know their routes better and because they're getting superior conditioning to what they had in high school (with Barwis this is doubly true). I'd hold off, however, on saying that Odoms is going to be a true home run threat on every play. I'm probably the most doubtful of his abilities because he seemed to take plays off fairly often. This could be because he knew that Threetidan wasn't going to be able to hit him but that lack of effort is always scary. And I wasn't impressed with his blocking the majority of the time. But that could be because he was a true freshman.

One thing I'm dubious of is the smaller guys' abilities to block. Odoms and Gallon are tiny. I know that even if they can hold a block for a split second it can be a big difference; I'm just not sure that guys that small can really be expected to do that.

9-3 or 10-2? Wow. I like the optimism and I hope you are somewhere close on that prediction. I would LOVE to see Stevie Brown on your end of the year top 5 impact players.

Roy Roundtree because he and Tate really seem to be developing a chemistry between them. DRob will have limited chances to make an impact but, with the possibility of him taking it to the house every time he has the ball I do think he will have some impact. On D- I'm going with Gerg because his schemes, intensity, and holding players accountable will have a tremendous effect. Also, who ever is coming off the edge on BG's side blitzing. BG's going to get doubled and I think that whoever they load to that side to attack is going to have a monster year. Finally, Brendan Gibbons just because our FG kicking was so horrible last year.

Richard Roun--OOPS! ROY Roundtree is a kid I've had a mancrush on for awhile. I think he has the potential to be Adrian Arrington 2.0. Now, he obviously needs to fill out some, cuz Arrington is a Big Man--but Arrington caught anything that was in the same area code he was in, and word is that Roundtree has that same ability to catch the ball. I'm looking for a big year from Webb.

With regard to Zoltan. I mean, I get it: he has a name that is right up there with James Tiberious Kirk or Zaphod Beeblebrox. But a punter being the #5 impact player? The only way that happens is if he has to punt another 83 times and manages to do so without losing his leg. Guys, if this team is going to be anything that approaches 8-4 or something, Zoltan will have a nice season of about 45 punts, we will hardly know he's there, and he'll rank about #23 (hopefully behind a great place kicker) in terms of importance. What Zoltan can do is become more adept at pinning the other team deep inside their end of the field. In fact, I'd be elated to have Zotan be known for NOT having to really be much of an impact player at all this season, because if he is, well, the holiday season is not going to be pretty in Ann Arbor.

I think that punters can have a tremendous impact on a team. OK, Top 5 might be a little ambitious but punters are very important, especially depending on how effective the offense is. If Michigan is a team of "three and outs" again this year, Zolton can keep them in close games. If the defense isn't as stout as we hope, he can keep the other teams pinned back to limit their play calling. I remember that Andy Groom (OSU punter) kept the Buckeyes in a lot of games in 2002 and we all know how many they squeaked out at the end. A punter of Zolton's ability can pretty easily but a Top 10 contributor, especially on this team with so many unknowns.
